PROPOSAL FOR MCLEODS GREEN FINGERS (MGF)

Wayanad is a land of Farmers. The district covers an area of 212,560 hectares and is home to 780,619 inhabitants (2001 census). Even though the economy of the district depends mostly on the agriculture, it is facing many problems today. Agricultural production and productivity have decreased drastically over the years due to various reasons. The area was in the news for the high number of suicides by farmers, attributed to losses in farming. Many micro- and macro-level factors have been cited as reasons for failure on the agricultural front in this area. One such factor is the excessive chemical farming. The effect of intensive cropping has resulted in deteriorating soil tilt and decreased organic matter content. High level of chemical inputs is increasing pollution hazard and result further degradation of soil health. The increased use of agro- chemical is polluting water and atmosphere and thus affect crop production, animal and human health. To overcome the present situation, its essential to switch over to Organic farming. Organic farming is the procedure where, the chemical fertilizers and pesticides are replaced by the organic fertilizers. Organic farming can be called as Eco Farming as it is a way of agriculture that preserves the ecosystem. It eschews the use of harmful chemicals & fertilizers.
