Animal Lifer December 2012 5
Fluffy is a gorgeous, long-haired gal who gets along
with dogs and other cats, and adores people.
She would have easily found a new home if it wasn't for the fact that she's diabetic. That's why she lost her
last home; her people loved her, but were overwhelmed by the idea that she'd need daily insulin shots for
the rest of her life. She's at the Sonsini Animal Shelter, waiting for that special person who believes that every
animal deserves a chance at a happy life, even the ones who need a little extra help. So we've written to Santa,
and we're putting the word out here; Fluffy would like nothing more than to be adopted into a new family.

n first meeting, one would not
think that this quiet, unassuming,
soft-spoken man had accomplished so
much. Christopher Nye, now Develop-
ment Officer at Orion Society, a non-
profit organization whose concerns for
sustainability and environmental issues
is far-reaching, taught in the Business
Division, the Sciences and Engineering
Division and was Director of Special
Programs at Berkshire Community Col-
lege for twenty-six years, where he in-
stituted programs in place-based
education and service learning. A pub-
lished poet, he holds a Ph.D. in Ameri-
can Studies.
While at Berkshire Community College,
he secured federal and state grants to
promote service learning at BCC. One
grant was to address family violence
issues, and it allowed him to begin
working with veterinarian Lorna
Grande, then teaching at BCC, to edu-
cate about the human violenceanimal
abuse connection. As a way to begin to
bring this important connection to the
attention of the community, the two of
them decided to put on a conference,
securing funding from the Humane So-
ciety of the United States. The confer-
ence filled to capacity, and out of it
grew the idea of HAVEN (Human-An-
imal Violence Education Network).
His thoughtful contributions at HAVEN
meetings as well as his support in the
greater Berkshire County community
are invaluable as HAVEN continues to
make its voice heard throughout the
county and into the rest of Massachusetts.
It is essential to the work of HAVEN
and everyone in the field of animal
cruelty and domestic violence that
people like Christopher Nye understand
the goals of HAVEN and are willing to
speak to others about it.
Though his poetry has been published,
I suspect he is the most proud of his
childrens book, the beautifully written
and wonderfully illustrated, Old Shep-
herds Tale published in 2004 which
focuses on the animals in the stable on
the night of Jesus birth. Poignant paint-
ings of the ox, donkey and the cow and
the message from the angel at the end
about the goodness and value of the an-
imals is a reminder to children and
every reader about why animals are so
important. It would make a lovely gift
for children and adults alike and can be
purchased at Amazon.com for $17.95.
HAVEN may well not exist today
without Chris Nyes foresight and
HAVEN is fortunate indeed to have
someone of Chris Nyes caliber as part
of the HAVEN group !

F
or the past eight years, I have fos-
tered cats and kittens for the Son-
sini Animal Shelter. We have a
half-bath/laundry room in our house,
and I've come to look at it as a room
that saves lives if I use it well. Sure, it
would be more convenient to do laun-
dry if it were feline-free. But if I say yes
when there's a desperate family of kit-
ties who have nowhere else to go, it's
an easy fix to the part of me that wants
to have a positive impact in the world.
It's always an adventure. In December,
I took on three sick kittens who re-
quired lots of extra care, and one didn't
make it but the others are living the
dream now. Then it was a litter of four
newborns with no mom, requiring from
me all of the feeding and cleaning
chores a mother cat would have per-
formed. (Mamma cats don't get the re-
spect they deserve!) One of those didn't
make it but the others came through
well-adjusted and healthy. My next vis-
itor was Lulu, a one-day-old kitten
whose mother was hit by a car. Hoping
to find a new mom for her, I brought in
Latte, a cat who had just finished
raising her babies. Latte kept Lulu com-
pany and cleaned her but I had to bottle-
feed the little one. All of them have now
found homes. Now, I'm fostering a new
mom, Chrysanthemum. She and the
two kittens she finished raising are
currently residing in my bathroom
along with four young orphans that
Chrysanthemum and the older kittens,
Ivy and Sweet William, are helping to
nurture.
Our bathroom is a micro-world, an
underground railroad, an orphanage, a
happy place sometimes, a heartbreak-
ing place sometimes. Hundreds of
felines have passed through that bath-
room door to land in homes. Many
wouldn't have otherwise made it, or
would have had a difficult life without
the extra help. It's not that hard to do,
and it's not a long commitment each
time I say yes. Have an extra room? Try
fostering. It's a great way to save a life.

Chrysanthemum helped to raise six kittens who were
not her own, and will soon be looking for a home.
Dust Bunny and Baby Powder are two of many kittens
who will grow up to be healthy, well-adjusted cats
thanks to the Sonsini Foster Program.
Four orphan kittens enjoy the company of the older kitten, Ivy.

The Sonsini Animal Shelter is blessed to have a community of
strong support. It's never more evident than during the holiday
season when the spirit of giving is over-the-top inspirational. The
animals at the shelter are fortunate to have such kind friends.
If you want to find a way to give the gift of love to
homeless animals, here are a few ways you can do it.
Give someone on your gift list a donation to
the shelter in their name
If you have a friend or family member who loves animals,
this is a great way to help homeless animals and shorten your
gift-shopping list. The person will receive a card letting them
know the gift has been made on their behalf. The money will
be used for veterinary care.
Purchase a Memorial Plaque
For a donation of $50, a plaque with the name of a pet who has
passed will be posted on the memorial wall at the shelter.
Donate Items on our Wish List
What we most often run out of is kitty litter and dry kitten
food. After that, it's dry dog food (Purina One lamb and rice or
Iams) and dry cat food (Purina One, Iams, or any other pre-
mium brand from Petco). We currently need blankets too.
Adopt an Animal
Because after all, there's nothing more that a homeless animal
could wish for than to be welcomed into a new loving family!

A
n infantryman who was one of
only two to make it off of Hill
Vegas alive, Harold Wadley remem-
bers seeing Reckless coming up the
ridge. Generally one Marine led Reck-
less and she brought up ammo. Some of
the gun crew were wounded, so they
didnt have an extra Marine. She made
that trip all night long by herself. They
would tie a wounded Marine on her and
turn her around and shed head down
that ridge with all this artillery and mor-
tar coming in. The guys down there
would unload the wounded off her and
the ammo on her and she would turn
around right on her own and head right
back up. She knew exactly what her job
was.
Reckless delivered critical ammuni-
tion under constant fire, performing her
work in a human capacity, unguided by
anything but her own enormous desire
to serve. The number of lives she saved
cant be counted, and the appearance of
the little chestnut mare with the bright
white stripe guaranteed a boost in
morale.
Her selfless service in this battle not
only earned her the respect of all those
around her, but also got her promoted
to Staff Sergeant, a title never before or
since bestowed upon an animal. After
all, her courage and dedication to duty
defined the word Marine.
Wounded twice during the battle,
Reckless never stopped. She continued
to see more action during the war. After
the signing of the truce in July the
Marines traveled home, but Reckless,
mired in bureaucratic red tape, was left
behind. It wasnt until the Saturday
Evening Post ran an article about her in
April 1954,that people became aware of
her plight. In response, Reckless was
offered free transportation on a ship-
ping line by an executive of the line
who had read the article. She landed in
San Francisco on November 10, 1954
In retirement Reckless served as mas-
cot of the 1st Marine Division. She at-
tended retirements, promotions,
birthdays, and civilian parades. The
order had been given that, in recogni-
tion of all Sergeant Reckless had done,
there was never to be more weight on
her back again than a blanket. That
order stood. When Reckless went on
her daily jog at Camp Pendleton, the
Marine who accompanied her did so on
foot.
Reckless had four foals, three of
whom continued to live with her at
Camp Pendleton: Dauntless, Fearless
and Chesty. One filly died sadly at only
a month old.
She died at the age of 20, and is buried
at Camp Pendleton where a monument
to her stands at Stepp Stables. But her
story is just beginning. A YouTube
video
(http://wallythekat.tripod.com/A_Pages
/ AA- Vi deos - YOU- Tube/ Ar my-
Horse.html) has garnered hundreds of
thousands of views, a new book is
being written, and a movie and a mon-
ument in or near the Korean War Me-
morial are being planned. This game
little mare was an inspiration to all
those who knew her, and her story will
continue to inspire all those who didnt.
Check out her fan page (Official Sgt
Reckless Fan Club) or website

of dalmatian and staffordshire terrier. He is the most
lovable affectionate boy to people and especially
children. The only thing he loves more than people is
his favorite toy . . . A red ball. Petey would do best as

espair took hold
of the Colkers.
Eight days had passed
since his disappearance,
and Liz and her parents tried
to resign themselves that
Toby may be gone forever. Sue said
We were defeated said Sue, We
thought, he is gone, now we are going
to have to learn to accept it.
Yet just the very next evening, a
Lenox woman looking out her window
saw a small dog curled up on her porch.
The dog looked bedraggled, and when
she tried to get closer, the dog snarled
and attempted to bite her hand. She
called the police, who then called
Melissa, Animal DREAMS trapping
coordinator, who wears many hats in-
cluding substitute animal control offi-
cer. Melissa tried to slip a leash and
then a muzzle over the dog, but he tried
to bite her as well. As is typical for
Melissa, she showed patience and skill,
as she sat on the step of the porch and
gently talked to the terrified dog, toss-
ing a few treats his way, for over 10
minutes. When the dog finally relaxed
a bit, she was able to slip a leash over
his head. From that moment on, Toby
cooperated, walking alongside Melissa
to her car, where she then spent another
ten minutes holding him while the
heater warmed them both. Throughout
this event, Melissa wasnt yet realizing
that this was the very dog we had been
talking about rescuinguntil she was
able to read his I.D. tags and saw a Cal-
ifornia area code. I was so excited!
The poor little doghe was
trembling with cold and fear,
and was covered with bur-
docks. He was totally ex-
hausted and so
frightened.And now he
was safe said Melissa.
Tobys owner was ec-
static when she got
Melissas callshe
immediately phoned her
parents, then texted Jen-
nifer at ForeverHome.
Each of them described
feeling absoute elation at
hearing the news. After eight long days,
Tobys ordeal (as well as the emotional
ordeal for everyone who cared about
him) was over. Moments later, when
Melissa arrived at Sue and Joels home,
Toby sprang out of her arms and into
Joels. There wasnt a dry eye in the
house. Toby was alive!
Toby had traveled 8 miles from the
Colker home in the 8 days he was miss-
ing. Says Liz, as she prepares to fly
back home for Toby and celebrate
Hanukkah, the number 8 figures in
this storyshe had only had Toby for
8 weeks, and there are 8 candles in a
menorah. Its going to be a very happy
celebration this year, with Toby home
for the holidays!.
In writing this story, I asked everyone
involved what they would take away
from this experience. Liz, speaking
over the phone from L.A. said that what
touched her so was the genuine way
people responded and how much com-
munity concern was shown for Toby.
People were so kind and helpful,
wanting to help find Toby. It really
made me appreciate how much people
in the Berkshires care. Joel said,
Melissa was so delightful when
she returned Toby to us. You
could tell she really cared about
the dog.
Sue said that in searching for
Toby, she had reconnected with
people and friends in their neigh-
borhood that they hadnt seen in
years, and was so moved by
everyones willingness to help.
Jennifer, the California rescuer,
said that she was amazed at how
well everyone networked
through social media and was
especially impressed with Gran-
ite State Dog Rescue.
As I left the Colker house after
finishing the interview, I took
one more look at Toby, sitting in
Joels lap and looking out the big pic-
ture window at the expanse of field and
forest of our Berkshire landscape. He
seemed to have a wistful stare for a mo-
ment, but then he looked up into Joels
face, settled back into his lap, and
drifted off to sleep.
