SCOPE: This procedure covers the work method for execution of Horizontal Directional Drilling works for Major

Water Crossings/Road & Rail crossings TAKING OVER AND HANDLING OF MATERIALS

Taking over and material handling shall be done as per MGL technical specification MGL/ENG/STEEL/SP 102- Technical Specification for Taking over & Material Handling
PREPARATION OF SITE FOR HDD Launching/Entry Side Hard stand area: Select convenient area in the side of Rail/Road or on the bank of river for the

entry point of HDD pipe profile. The drilling rig and other auxiliary equipments eg Mud tanks, Mud Pump, Water Pump, Water tank & Drill pipes, Drill racks etc are to be located on this side. For this purpose a rectangular area of sufficient size shall be graded and consolidated with granular soil to a level slightly higher than the surrounding ground levels so as to keep the area reasonably hard and dry during the drilling operation.
Bentonite storage and pit: An area within the dry hard stand is to be earmarked for

storage of bentonite next to the mud tanks. A pit shall be dug outside the hardstand but close to same of sufficient capacity to accommodate the used slurry and the cutting mixture. This pit will be prepared after the rig is on site.
Receiving/Exit side (pipe string side): A rectangular are of sufficient size shall be prepared

on the side bank of the river which has been selected as the exit side. This will be the area of hardstand prepared in the same manner as on the entry side to be used primarily for stacking of the drill pipes. Bentonite pit: A bentonite pit shall be dug up close to the hard stand for discharge of bentonite slurry from the drill hole.
Proper access should be provided to both the sides of the crossing. HORIZONTAL DIRECTIONAL DRILLING OPERATIONS

The drill site has been surveyed and drill profile drawing shall be submitted for approval. This drawing provides the profile of the drill hole. Upon approval of this drawing and completion of the pipe string preparation work including successful hydro testing of the pipe strings, the entrance and exit stakes shall be fixed at the design entry and the exit points.

The CONTRACTOR shall provide all material, equipment and facilities for directional drilling. Proper alignment and elevation of the bore hole shall be consistently maintained throughout the directional drilling operation. The method used to complete the directional drill shall conform to the requirements of all applicable standards/specifications. Copies of all permits will be supplied to the CONTRACTOR by the MGL EIC. Pipeline shall be placed with a minimum of 2.5 m cover from existing ground level to top of pipe. Bore profiles demonstrating compliance with the depth of cover requirements must be submitted for piping work claimed on each request for payment. The entire drill path shall be accurately surveyed with entry and exit stakes placed in the appropriate locations within the areas indicated on drawings. If CONTRACTOR is using a magnetic guidance system, drill path will be surveyed for any surface geo-magnetic variations or anomalies. CONTACTOR shall place a silt fence between all drilling operations and any drainage, well-fields, wetland, waterway or other area designated for such protection necessary by the road/ rail authorities or local bodies. Additional environmental protection necessary to contain any hydraulic or drilling fluid spills shall be put in place, including shoulder, liners, turbidity curtains and other measures. The pilot hole shall be drilled on the bore path with no deviations greater than 2% of depth over a length of 50 meter. In the event that pilot does deviate from the bore path more than 2-feet of depth in 50 m, CONTRACTOR will notify MGL EIC and MGL EIC may require CONTRACTOR to pullback and re-drill from the location along bore path before the deviation. In the event that a drilling fluid fracture, inadvertently returns or a returns loss occurs during pilot hole drilling operations, CONTRACTOR shall cease drilling, wait at least 30 minutes, inject a quantity of drilling fluid with a viscosity exceeding 120 seconds as measured by a Marsh funnel and wait another 30 minutes. If mud fracture or returns loss continues, CONTRACTOR will discuss additional options with the MGL EIC and work will then proceed accordingly. Upon completion of the pilot hole phase of the operation, a complete set of as-built records shall be submitted in duplicate to the MGL EIC. These records shall include copies of the plan and profile drawing, as well as directional survey reports as recorded during the drilling operation. Upon completion and approval of the pilot hole location the hole enlarging phase shall begin. The final hole enlargement shall not exceed by 1.5 times the O.D. of the pipe joint. The open bore hole may be stabilized by means of bentonite drilling slurry pumped through the inside diameter of the drill rod and through openings in the reamer. The drilling slurry must be in a homogenous / flowable state serving as an agent to carry the

loose cuttings to the surface through the annulus of the borehole. The bentonite slurry is to be contained at the exit or entry side of the directional bore in pits or holding tanks. The slurry may be recycled at this time for re use in the hole opening operation, or shall be hauled by the CONTRACTOR to an approved dumpsite for authorized disposal. Following completion of the bore hole the product pipe/ casing pipe shall be pulled through the hole by means of a pulling eye attached to the lead joint of pipe.
TESTING OF PIPELINE

Cleaning and flushing are to be done by the CONTRACTOR in accordance with the requirements of the contract and these specifications. Directional drilled product pipe shall be tested by the CONTRACTOR after pullback. The average pressure shall be maintained at 78 bar-g for 24 hours with no leakage as may be indicated by a drop in pressure, or as may be allowed by the MGL EIC. The detailed specification (MGL/ENG/STEEL/SP 108) for hydro testing of carrier pipeline is attached along with this document The test pump and water supply shall be arranged to allow accurate measurements of the water required to maintain the test pressure. Any material showing seepage or the slightest leakage shall be replaced as directed by the MGL EIC at no additional expense to the OWNER. Installed pipelines shall be tested end to end.
SITE RESTORATION

Following HDD operations, CONTRACTOR will de-mobilize equipment and restore the work site to the original condition or better. All excavations will be backfilled and compacted according to the specifications or as directed by the MGL EIC. Access to property, fences, ditches, retaining walls, irrigation systems and other structures shall be reinstated in compliance with agreements drawn up at the time of initial survey Land register marks moved for the work shall be replaced by a surveyor, where necessary devices to prevent erosion of the backfill materials shall be installed when reinstating embankments, and slopes. Re-instatements of footpaths, road surfaces, banks, shoulder, etc shall be performed with the agreement of authorities concerned
RECORD KEEPING AND AS-BUILTS

CONTRACTOR shall maintain a daily project log of drilling operations and a guidance

system log with a copy given to the MGL EIC at completion of the project. The CONTRACTOR shall furnish as-laid plan and profile drawings based on these recordings showing the actual location horizontally and vertically of the installation, and all utility facilities found during the installation. "As-laid" plans shall be submitted for piping work claimed on each pay request. 1. The as laid drawings should be in the scale of 1:100 (details shall be visible & legible) & should be submitted in an A1 sheet. Depth should be in the scale of 1:15 or better. 2. Diameter, pipe material, length, and location of pipeline should be clearly indicated. 3. Distance of pipeline from electrical pole / permanent property, i.e., boundary wall, gate of the society, manhole of any other utility (manhole owner name to be mentioned) should be provided at least every 10 metres. If there is any change in alignment/orientation and offset distances etc. of the pipeline in between the above said 10mtr, the same shall be clearly mentioned in the as laids. Permanent objects like poles, junction boxes, manholes etc. can be indicative and their dimensions not necessarily to the scale. The distance shall be with respect to the nearest edge of the above said permanent objects. 4. Heat no./ Batch No. of all the pipe, pipe fittings, valves, IJ, heat shrink sleeves etc. shall be mentioned in the As-laid drawings to keep the traceability of the materials used. 5. Technical deviations (if any) should be provided with reference to the buildings / permanent structures around, and the same should be cited clearly with all the relevant details, including separate sketches. 6. Total as laid length (size wise); bill of materials with a standard legend approved by MGL should be mentioned in each sheet. 7. Names of roads, major landmarks and buildings should be mentioned appropriately for reference. 8. Direction of flow should be indicated in each of the drawings. 9. Text on the as laid drawing should be clearly visible. 10. As laid drawings shall be duly signed at managerial level.
SUBSURFACE/SUBSTRATA INVESTIGATION

The CONTRACTOR shall be responsible for having determined to his satisfaction, prior to the submission of his bid, the nature and location of the work, the ground conformation, the character of equipment and facilities needed preliminary to and during the prosecution of the work, the general and local conditions and all other matters which can, in any way affect the work under this Contract. The prices established for the work to be done will reflect all costs pertaining to the work described in these specifications. For purposes of this specification the definition of substrata shall mean a layer of earth beneath the surface soil.
