Publishers Note
Dear readers, Hard to believe that in the present days of advanced technology, synthesizers and DJs, high quality live music is a dying art form. With this magazine we simply want to support Balis vibrant live music scene by providing information about gigs and performances held in several Bali-based restaurants. This is more than a magazine filled with a schedule of performances though. For musicians, music enthusiasts and food lovers alike, this is a guide to where and when you can find the best of Bali performing on stage, a platform that hopefully will help you get your fix of live music. Flip through the pages and youll find not only future events, but also interviews with musicians, featured food of the month and stories behind the participating venues. From jazz, reggae to world music we hope to add value to your live music experience in Bali. Last but not least, wed like to thank all participating restaurants and partners who made it possible for us to finally launch this 1st edition. We, at Bali On Stage, simply have one aim: to keep live music alive. Happy reading, Bali On Stage team

ITO KURDHI
Ryoshi Quintet
Would you tell us more about the beginning of your music career? After I graduated from Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (in my time it was called IKIP) majoring in Music, I came to Bali and played at some of the 5-star hotels while I was learning more about Jazz music. I met David Ades in the 1993s and I learned about Jazz music from him. I began to look for references from books, DVDs, Cds, etc, after that my music life continues until now. I just simply love playing music, I love waking up and go straight to play my bass guitar. But that doesnt mean that I sleep with it, Id rather sleep hugging my pillows or a wife if I had one (laughing). Usually great musicians were born from a musician family, what about yourself? No, not me. I am the only one who loves music and wants to be a musician in my family. I used to have arguments with my mother about me wanting to take music lessons and wanted to major in Music, but she had agreed at last because she knows that I really love music. And what is your specialization in music? I love bass guitar. Because I love low frequency and low notes, therefore bass guitar is my specialization. But I also play piano, and Im also a song composer. Ive made an album called Afternoon in Ubud. The genre of the whole package is world music fusion. So I combined Javanese with Balinese traditional music such as gamelan, with a touch of Western music. Who are the musicians that inspired you? I used to admire classical musicians such as Beethoven, Mozart, and Bach. I also listened to Ron Carter for swing / jazz music, also Miles Davis for classic jazz. And as for bass player, I loved Jaco Pastorius. But those were all in my past. As for now, I want to be myself. I want to be known as the bass player myself, even though still with influence from other musicians. I want to have my own character. What do you think about the live music scene in Bali these days? Until now I have been performing in so many live music events, especially Jazz music events. And as far as I can see, it is getting better and better. There are so many places that demand live music these days. So it is a good opportunity for us musicians. Is there any place or event that gave you a special memory? Well, all events and places were special for me. But there were some events that are more special than others like Pinang Island Jazz festival; I was playing with the Rio Quartet back then. Also Kota Kinabalu Jazz Festival, Reggae Jazz Festival and last but not least Java Jazz Festival. It was fun there, and there were a lot of groupies from Bali too (ha ha). Can you tell us about what are the ups and downs of being a musician? Well, in the beginning of my music career it was the financial problem for sure, the fee wasnt as good as now. But it is a process, and Im just enjoying it. Because life must have ups and downs. Thank you :)

Traditional Balinese cuisine, made from soft and wellcooked duck meat as the main compound, served with steamed Balinese spices and jasmine rice as well as Balinese vegetables, creating the diversity of the flavours. The duck meat can be enjoyed separately, or if you prefer spicy flavours, chilli sambal and matah sambal are served to match up the spiciness you desire.
This unique food is made from boneless fish topped with creamy wasabi gravy, lining up with the combination of fresh bean salad with pine nut pesto and mint leaves, creating a sweet delicate taste for the fish.
What Happened
Africa Love
On Saturday, November 25th, Hamanah Drum N Dance brought together Balis African music community under one roof in Ryoshi House of Jazz, Seminyak.
Background Africa Love Music Fest is the first African-inspired event on Bali, bringing together 40 Bali-based musicians of different nationalities representing 8 different groups. The event originally aimed to raise funds for Vieux Aliou Cissokho, the bandleader of Afronesia, who had his bag stolen. Inside was his passport and personal documents among other valuable stuff. Being Senegalese, he does not have an embassy or consulate in Indonesia that can help him issue a new passport. Thus, he must return home to solve the issue and the cost is not little. In urgent need to collect quite an amount of money in such a short time, Vieux is clearly not alone. With Hamanah Drum N Dance as the initiator of this fundraising event, the whole African music community in Bali decided to get together and take part by contributing their music. Within 3 weeks, they managed to do the whole preparation and successfully created such a lively festivity, one joyous night of Balis African music delights. The event did not only help raise the much needed fund through staging African music in its true form, it also showed how much love and support this one big family have for each other. Rundown The Amazing Drumming Monkeys kicked off the evening with their interactive kids puppet show, attracting kids and parents who were passing by the restaurant. The evening continued with Hamanah African drum and dance spectacular, which was a percussion performance combined with capoiera, fire dance, samba and belly dancing shows. At around 8pm the festivity moved to the 2nd floor, which was starting to be packed with excited, happy dancing crowd. DJ X rocked the dance floor with his electronic version of Rumble in the Jungle, combined with saxophone. After that, Afro Spirit was on stage, performing the best of Afro Latin music.
Music Fest
The Marimba band Supakalooloo continued the fiesta, playing music from Zimbabwe and beyond. Founded by Rob Weber, who is also the founder of Bali Spirit Festival, Fela Kuti-inspired band Susu Ibu took turn and performed Afro funk, rock and reggae in combination with trance. Around 10pm, the stage was ready for Kamau, who was performing his well-known Pitch Black Gold, a combination of poetry, rap and hip-hop dance. And finally, it was time for Afronesia to go on stage. Focusing on Afro jazz and world music, Afronesia also blends traditional African and Indonesian music elements with a contemporary twist. During the event, Afronesia did the pre-release of their first album entitled Tama Silo with 50 copies for sale. Recorded at Antida Music Studio in Bali, the official launch of this debut album will take place in December 2012. Quoting Sarah, one of the founders of Hamanah Drum N Dance: Hamanah Drum N Dance would like to thank the Bali African community for the awesome support. Wed also like to thank Ryoshi House of Jazz for giving Afronesia their first lucky break in Bali, also for the huge help in hosting the event. Lastly, wed like to thank the Bali community, family and friends, who just love African music and came to support tonight. About Hamanah Drum N Dance Apart from sponsoring African dancers every year, Hamanah Drum n Dance organizes African-themed parties, weddings and other events. They also do drum and dance shows, provide drum and dance classes, and offer drum sales and repair. Sponsors Africa Love Music Fest wouldnt have been successful without the support and donations from San Miguel, Jim Beam, Bali Spirit Festival, Betel Nut, Drum Factory and Ryoshi Seminyak House of Jazz. Disko Afrika also contributed by decorating the venue in a beach partylike atmosphere.
