Instructors Profile Dr. Amira Kashgary is an assistant professor of linguistics, majoring in sociolinguistics and discourse analysis. She got her BA in English Language and Religious Studies from College of Education in 1978. In 1980 she got her first MA in Education majoring in International Development Education from Stanford University, Cal., USA. In 1983 she got her second MA in Education majoring in Curriculum and Teacher's Education (TEFL) from Stanford University, Cal., USA. Her third MA is in Linguistics from Girls' College of Education, Jeddah, KSA in 1988. In 1993, she got her Ph.D. in Linguistics, Specialization: Socio-linguistics and Discourse Analysis, Girls' College of Education, Jeddah. KSA. Dissertation Title: Discourse Analysis: A Pragmatic Approach to Dramatic Discourse with Special Reference to some of Arthur Millers Plays. She has been working in the Department of English since 1986. She is a member of many academic and cultural societies in and outside Saudi Arabia. She is also a writer in AlWatan Saudi newspaper. Her research interest includes text and discourse analysis, pragma-stylistics, translation studies, cultural studies on women and literature and educational reform and development. Course Objectives Students are expected to be able to:

Develop their translation ability in four areas: translation as a science, translation as a skill, translation as an art, and translation as a matter of taste Draw on their linguistic knowledge and resources to approach translation Acquire a simplified but comprehensive account of translation theory with reference to the concept of EQUIVALENCE Differentiate between formal equivalence and pragmatic equivalence Apply insights from cross-cultural semantics and pragmatics in evaluating two types of translated texts: Poetical and Religious (poetry and Quran)

Course Description At this level, translation is dealt with as a field of applied contrastive textology. Accordingly, the course introduces students to more advanced problems of translation, i.e. pragmatic and cultural problems. Students are expected to be familiar with the two levels of translation problems, i.e. grammatical and lexical levels. At the pragmatic level, students are introduced to the concept of pragmatic equivalence as opposed to formal and ideational equivalence. Students are introduced to the idea that rendering of the meaning of the text or its structure is not always a matter of one-to-one translation All these problems are dealt with within the textual level. Actual applications are done through examining established translations of actual works of literature that have been translated from English into Arabic and vice versa. In addition, translations of various types of texts are done in and out of class concentrating on applying solutions as discussed throughout the term. Students are expected to take a major part in this course by participating actively in class discussions, raising up critical questions on the material presented and bringing all what you are interested in as topics to be discussed in class. They are also expected to be up-to-date with what is going on in their community, country and the world around them. Students are required to present weekly reports on the material read and topics discussed in class. You are also welcome to bring in new ideas and suggestions relevant to current translation issues and challenges paused by Arabic-English and English-Arabic translations.
