Head losses in water transfer system shall be evaluated for hydraulic purposes and accounted for in design for all normal operation conditions. This implies that dimensions of water conductor system are dictated by the design flow and the ruling hydraulic conditions upstream, downstream and within the structures themselves. If these arise load rejections in Power Station, water conductor system shall be designed to avoid over-topping and it shall have a minimum freeboard above maximum water level shall be as per relevant BIS code. Water conductor system structures shall be designed to be emptied by gravity only. No pumping shall be involved. To facilitate normal inspection and maintenance, the water conductor structures shall have inverts suitable for vehicle traffic, avoiding circular shape of the bottoms of conduits that may carry bed load. For the optimum operation of Project, reliable monitoring functions for water conductor system are required. Necessary instrumentation to collect and transfer information on gate positions, reservoir and forebay water levels, as well as tunnel water levels immediately upstream the power intake, flow measurement shall be identified in the Basic Design. Tunnel intake gates shall be capable of throttling to enable controlling the discharge passing through tunnel. Gate shall be able to receive command / signal from instruments ( by others) and operate accordingly for this purpose.
