Port Clinton Yacht Club January 2013

From your Commodore, John Schaffner

Greetings to all of my friends at PCYC! I am very much looking forward to a terrific year in 2013, and we are just now getting started. Past Commodore Bickley has assured me that the year goes fast, so here goes article #1 in the Jib Sheet. First off, I would like to thank and congratulate Todd Bickley on an exceptional year as Commodore of Port Clinton Yacht Club. We got a whole bunch of things accomplished that will serve our club for years moving forward, not the least of which was all of the work accomplished at our most precious asset, the pool. An irrigation system was put in place on the North Shore open area. The Kids Room was renovated. 17 new pedestals were installed. Finally, the new decorative fence was installed around the childrens playground next to the pool. 2012 was a transitional year in a lot of ways, especially as it relates to the management of the club facilities. Chuck Reichman has taken the challenge and has run with it. Well, maybe run is the wrong word, but the board has seen many, many improvements to the fiscally responsible running of the club, both outside and inside. The club facilities are in great shape, and much of the thanks go to Chuck and his partnership with now Vice Commodore Dr. Mike Hablitzel. Big kudos also go out to our Caretaker, Eric Reynolds. Mean Mary Alice and I, along with a number of others will be decommissioning the Christmas decorations on Sunday, January 6 starting around 10 a.m. This is kind of an open committee kind of thing, and volunteers are always welcome. Many hands lighten the work load. Besides, there is probably a football game that afternoon. I would also like to personally invite all our members to the 2013 Recognition Dinner on Saturday, January 12. The dinner is $20 per person, and well worth it. It is our opportunity to celebrate the year 2012 and recognize the accomplishments of so many of our members who donate their time and talents to our Yacht Club. We will be presenting the Oliver True Memorial Trophy for the PCYC Member of the Year, the Shark Trophy for the Sailor of the Year, and the Junior Sailor of the Year award. It really is a terrific evening, and I look forward to seeing many of you there. Other events on the January calendar include Friday Night Snacks on January 4 and January 18; the Winter Brunch on Sunday, January 20, and the Soup and Sub Potluck on Saturday, January 26. Other than New Years Day, the Club will be open and all of our talented and friendly mixologists (Ive always loved that word) will be happy to serve you your favorite libations. I would like now to quote Article VI or the PCYC Constitution. All powers and interests in the Club and its property not expressly granted to the officers or duly constituted committees of the Club are reserved to the members. Quite simply, this means that Port Clinton Yacht Club is YOUR club, and we as Flag Officers and Trustees work for YOU! Lets all work together to make 2013 a great year at PCYC!

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Terry and I Hope everyone had an enjoyable Holiday Season and a safe transition into the New Year. Now it is time to get back into the grind of our routines whatever that may mean to you. I look forward to several things as I start my new duties, like getting to know more of our members, working closely with PC FM Chuck Reichman and also the volunteer members who will help on upcoming projects. The member involvement the past couple years has been phenomenal and I hope to build on that this year. Stay tuned, it should be an exciting year.

From the Editor

Next time you see Mary Hetrick, tell her what a nice job she does with the Ships store. Theres a lot of volunteer time spent keeping the store stocked and manning it during events. Mary knows how many of our PCYC members and spouses have artistic talents and are inspired to share their work. For the first time, the board accepted Marys recommendation to have an art exhibit and sale at the club in time for the Holidays. Member artist were invited but the even was open to the public. Thirteen members displayed their work while Friday night attendees enjoyed a cocktail as they checked a few gifts off their list. Even the men didnt seem to mind shopping this way. We hope to have another similar event next year with more club member participation.

Another year is in the books. Hopefully everyone had a great New Year Celebration. The schedule for the upcoming boating season is pretty much completed. I hope to have the schedule posted shortly so that you can get your calendars marked and have plenty of time to make your cruising arrangements. We will also be having a Winter Cruise-Out this year on Saturday February 16th. The Cruise-Out will consist of a North Coast Winery tour. We will be stopping at three different wineries: Paper Moon Winery in Vermillion, Quarry Hill Winery in Berlin Heights and Hermes Winery in Sandusky. We would be meeting and Leaving PCYC at noon on the 16th and would be back around 5:00. A local transportation company will be arranged to get us to and from the wineries. Cost of transportation will be 20.00 per person. This event is open to boaters and non boaters alike. The event will be cut off at the first 40 people to sign up. A sign-up sheet has been placed at the bar. This will be a great way to escape the winter blues and have a good time with fellow PCYC members. The deadline to sign up will be February 1st.
