1.
1.1.

SCOPE This procedure specifies the method to be followed for HYDROSTATIC TESTING of steel welded storage tanks.

1.2. This procedure follows the requirements according to API 650 2. 2.1. 2.2. GENERAL The hydrostatic test shall be completed before the application of the painting. Attention must be given to careful control and monitoring during all stages of testing. 2.3. Clear and fresh water shall be the primary hydrostatic test medium so use of other different medium shall be approved by the client. 2.4. 2.5. 3. 3.1. For fixed roof tank , the tank shall be filled with water up to top of the top angle. Tank shall be freely vented to atmosphere during filling and emptying operation. PRELIMINARY WORK Prior to hydrostatic testing, all items as indicated in table 3-1 shall be inspected approved and released by the client. 3.2. Prior to start of hydrostatic test all required NDT shall be performed and approved by client. 3.3. No connection of piping system to tank shall be made until hydrostatic test is completed and accepted. 3.4. Test equipments shall be assembled as shown on Figure

TEST PREPRATION Tank shall be free of large debris and bottom will be broom cleaned. All shell nozzles shall be blinded excepted those which are used for filling. draining and leveling of hydrostatic test medium as shown is FIG.3-1. ATTENTION: Never close any roof manhole except pneumatic test.

4.3.
4.4.

Water for hydrotesting shall be clean and clear (according to Item 2.3.) Result of check elevations at a minimum of 4 points on tanks < 25m and 8 points on tanks > 25m, must be indicated in the TABLE 4-2.

4.5.
4.6.

Prior to filling with water, elevation 2000mm above bottom plate shall be recorded. Elevation measuring points shall be easily distinguished from other construction marks.

4.7.

The water filling rate is expected 80 m3/h and filling time is 12 hours/day. HYDROSTATIC TEST Filling shall be through a suitable shell connection and filling rate shall not be more than 5m height of tank per day.

5.
5.1.

5.2.

Whenever test level is reached, filling shall be stopped and held at test level for 48 hours.

5.3.

After hydrotest, water shall be drained at a controlled rate (not less than 1 m height of tank per day), to a suitable point (acc. to API 650) .

ATTENTION: At least one roof manhole cover shall be removed. 5.4. Settlements shall be measured and recorded at elevation 1m, 3.2 m, 6.45 m, 9.65 m & top of shell. 5.5. Filling shall be stopped for measuring.

5.6.

During holding period (Ref. to Item5.2), settlements shall be recorded on a daily basis.

NOTE: If filling is stopped due to large settlements, a record of such settlements must be started and plotted on a time scale to show the rate of settlement. 5.7. At the completion of 48 hours holding period, the settlement should be recorded .If the amount of settlement exceeds 10 mm in a day test can be continued after purchaser inspector permision. 5.8. Visually inspection of tank shell, fittings and roof shall be done, on daily basis. If any repairs are required, they shall be carried out in accordance with section 5. 13 5.9. 5.10. 5.11. 5.12.
5.13.

Inspection shall be carried out during filling and holding periods. Water temperature shall not be less than 0 oC. Level indication system shall be installed. Water level in level indication system must be distinguished from the bottom plate. REPAIRS Should any leakages occur, they will be repaired in accordance with the following:

5.13.1. All 5.13.2. If

welding will be in accordance with approved welding procedure.

any leackages and deformations observed, water shall be drained to a minimum of 300 mm below the point of failure point. Then the repair work shall be carried out.

5.13.3. 5.13.4.

After repair, hydrotest shall be restarted from actual level. All defects shall be called to the attention of client, and his approval shall be obtained before the defects are repaired.

5.14.

CLEANING After hydrotest all tanks shall be broom cleaned by fabricator. However in the event of excessive deposits of mud, dirt, etc., it shall be the fabricator responsibility to arrange for the rinsing and cleaning.
