Losing 13 seniors, an average
team might hope for a .500 sea-
son but not Indian Hill's varsity
soccer team. Under new head
coach Randy Stertmeyer and his
assistants Jim Vockell and Jack
Niehaus, the Braves are aiming to
repeat as league champions. If
the players are able to stay clear
of injuries, Stertmeyer feels,
"We've got a real shot at it."
Stertmeyer, Niehaus, and
Vockell are all Indian Hill resi-
dents who have jobs that they
joke are only "hobbies." When
asked why he took the coaching
job, Stertmeyer replied, "I believe
in the sport and the school sys-
tem. We're fortunate to have the
opportunity." All three coaches
feel they are fortunate in having a
type of job that allows so much
time off. All three have been
involved in athletics for a long

its EHL title this year, and hopes
to advance to the state tourna-
ment.
Coach Cindy Crilley is very
pleased about the team's progress
so far. "Everyone has excellent

with young people. When asked
why he liked working with
younger people, Niehaus an-
swered, "They're a hell of a lot
more fun. It makes you stay
younger yourself."
The Braves opened camp
August 2nd with conditioning
which lasted two weeks. More
than fifty young men appeared
ready to "want, work, and win"
again this year. Having lost all
three goalkeepers, the team hopes
Andy Hall can lead the defense
this season. The midfield is the
stronghold of this year's team led
by captains Jeff Graham and Dan
Greene. The offense is looking
for leadership from seniors
Dwight Poffenberger and Ron
Zesch to put many Mr. Balls into
Mr. Net.

The team's biggest problem
will be a lack of players. The
number of players has been
temporarily cut from nine to
eight by an injury, and seven
people are needed for each match.

Thompson is a University of Cin-
cinnati student and has played
collegiate soccer. Thompson
seems to love the work so far and
says of his players, "They are as
good a group of kids as you'll
find." He feels the first couple
games are important to develop
the confidence of his very young
team. Asked about his goal this
season, Thompson joked, "If we
don't go 17-0,I will resign."
With the new coaching staff,
the Braves hope to develop many
young players but also complete a
successful season. One thing is
certain at Indian Hill, soccer is
growing.
Coach Niehaus commented on
his new job, "We see some tre-
mendous talent coming up. It
will be a blast being part of it.

equipment for the cafeteria.
In the cafeteria, new tables, a
french fry machine, and a juice
machine have been installed.
Feltman says scooped ice cream
will be available in the near fu-
ture.
Another addition to the
school is a new bulletin board to
be raised sometime before mid-
September. The bulletin board,
among other things, will list
teachers names along with their
room numbers in order to aid new
students.

High school acquires seven Apple computers

The h& school has recently
purchared seven new computers
through a Board of Education
decision.
According to Mrs. Karen
Edgecomb, the high school's
computer programming teacher,
the purchase was the frrst part of
a three-part plan. The Board of
Education approved the plea to
develop a sophisticated computer
education ~ r o ~ a throughout

Faculty undergoes mr nor changes

The administration hired four
new teachers this summer for the
1982-83 school year. In addition,
four Ottawa teachers will instruct
classes in both the junior high and
the high school.
The new teachers are Robert
Girton, Dan North, Sherry Ran-
dall, and Ron Weitzenkorn.
The teachers from the junior
high are Robert Blaney of the
French department, Greg Hay-
ward of the social studies depart-
ment, Jeff Icsman of the English
department, and Charles Wojcik
of the jcience department.
Robert Girton, the new social
studies teacher, says he was at-
tracted to Indian Hill because of
"the fine academic program . . .
and the people." Girton lives in
Dayton and enjoys traveling,
camping, and gardening.

1981, administrators saw the need
to integrate a program of com-
puter literacy into the curriculum
on all levels. They felt that both
students and faculty needed
knowledge of how computers
operate and how they can be used
in all academic fields.

"It was hectic but great,"
commented new assistant band
director Dan North in regard to
the first day of school.
North will take the place of
Steve Strider who held the posi-
tion last year and is now the head
band director.
North has had eight years
experience through working with
high school bands in Wisconsin
and Indiana. He received his
degree in music at Ball State Uni-
versity.
"I think the faculty and ad-
ministration is the most courteous
and friendly I've ever met," said
choir teacher Sherry Randall.
Randall is replacing Mr. Henry
Henley while he is on his sabbati-
cal. Randall has previously taught
at Sycamore High School and
Landmark Christian School.
Indian Hill is offering its last
German class this year due to lack
faculty, and administrators to
investigate the opportunities
available to the district. The
committee was headed by Dr.
Bryan Moore, curriculum director
of the school district.
According to Dr. Moore the
committee reported back t o the
Board in March with recommen-
dations regarding what types of
hardware (i-e. computers, print-
ers, etc.) and software (i.e. pro-
grams) would be needed. The
Board agreed to fmance the pro-
ject on the sole condition that the
school tax levy passed on June 8.
When the levy passed, the
committee began working o n the
specifics of the , computer pack-
age. On August 10 the Board of
Education officially all0cated
approximately $38,000 for the
purchase of fifteen Apple I1
computers - seven to be placed in
the high school, five in Ottawa,
and three at Wyandot.
"One of our goals is to get our
faculty exposed to the ways com-
puters can help them in instruct-
ing students," commented Dr.

German I1 course which will en-
able last year's German students
to meet college requirements.
Weitzenkorn went to Vander-
bilt University for undergraduate
studies. He then went to Indiana
University in pursuit of his mas-
ter's degree. When asked about
his hobbies Weitzenkorn replied,
"I like sports."
Miss Martha Selzer who went
on her sabbatical last year is re-
turning to the English depart-
ment.

Several changes greeted IHers
this year at the high school.
One of the more obvious
changes was the schedule change.
The administration added four
minutes onto each class period in
order to meet state requirements.
According to Dr. Karl Felt-
Moore. "Another goal is t o give
our eigth grade students as well as
our future graduating seniors
basic knowledge in the field of
computers."
To accomplish this, instruc-
tion will be given to fifth graders
in Wyandot and eigth graders in
Ottawa on the capabilities and
impact of computers. '
For the future, the administra-
tion plans not only to increase the
number of "computer literacy
units" but also to put the present
computers in use more often. For
the frrst semester approximately
65 students will be using the eight
high school computers during
three class periods per day.
In the years to come the com-
puters will be used during all pe-
riods of the day not only for
classes in programming, but also
as instructional aids for students
and teachers. Another plan for
the future is to link up a "net-
work" for the computers so that

this past Tuesday that make
school that much easier to come

thing to look forward to.
We are continuing our Big
BrotherIBig Sister program to
make IH's newest students feel at

at 12:OO p.m., the senior class is
sponsoring a Big BroIBig Sis
dance this evening at the high
school cafeteria from 10 p.m.
until 12. Admission is two dol-
lars, and the feature band is Hairy
Strawberry. The success of the
speech, we hope to have our Stu-
dent Government booth set up by
this Tuesday. The booth is de-
signed to inform students of up-
coming SG events, and we hope
the student body wdl take advan-
tage of it.
Already, the individual classes
have begun planning projects like
class floats, prom, etc. We en-
courage all students to ask around
and find out what needs to be
done to make these undertakings
a success.

that, ranger Kev. I could claim

afraid my die is already cast. I
took on James Watt's corrupt
machine and lost this summer;
and although I and three of my
friends got our faces stepped
upon by the khaki-clad agent of a
crypto-fascist government, I think
I feel a bit wiser for it. This was
the summer of my initiation.
The bittersweet, deeply
moving roots of my criminal
behavior date back to my up-
bringing in the vicious middle
class jungle of Chicago's western
suburbs. There, I befriended a
fellow federal criminal-to-be; for
his family's sake I'll simply call
him Al.
In the summer of 1977, A1
and I made a decision that would
shape our collective destiny as no
other had up to that time. We
decided, with our families' bless-
ings, to attend a camp in northern
Minnesota. Even then, the idea
filled me with foreboding, the
kind of feeling you get just before

It was brilliant! ! We immediatly
set to work. We dug down and
down, six inches or more, snicker-
ing as we covered the pit with an
intricate mat of organic matter.
The ducks fell for it at once, stu-
pid tame creatures that they were,
and within ten minutes, the
criminal element in our souls had
come alive. Sociopathically hys-
terical, we watched the ducks fall
into the hole and walk out again
for what seemed like hours.

Then the inevitable happened.

cop an entrapment plea, but he
had us. He fined our counselor

and another $25 for erosion. It
seems that if you dig a hole on
Uncle Sam's property, he's more
than witling to make a federal
case out of it.
Five years later, that scene
flashed back to me in a sordid
rush. My camping trip this
summer had started out innocent-
ly enough: I would join A1 and
two other friends, we would drive
for frfteen hours, get to Minne-
sota, canoe for three days and
nights, drive back, and basically
have a good time. They turned
out to be the most shady days of
my life.
In retrospect, the mistake that

probably lay in our totally ignor-
ing an opportunity for massive
alcohol consumption on our way
through Wisconsin, an eighteen
state. For some strange reason,
we decided it would be nicer to
~urvivethe trip than to become
totally polluted on our nation's
Interstate Highway System.
That failure to drink exten-
sively on the way so pent up our
criminal urges that, by the time
we hit Duluth, it would have
taken no less than a titanic acid
romp to turn us back from the
path of wickedness. Since none
of us had either the materials or
inclination for becoming critically
bent, it would seem our destinies
were rigidly set from that point
on.
By the time we got the canoes
into the water, it had been deter-
mined that the only*way to make
the trip salvagable was to commit
a federal crime.
Two uneventfd days and
nights passed. The hormones or
enzymes or whatever was making
us aU criminatly insane were at
too high a level to ignore. We had
paddled aU day. The campsites
were all taken. Then the oppor-
tunity presented itself.
The point jutting into the har-
bor did not have a government-
issue fire grate or latrine, but
someone had cleared away the
underbrush and put together a
stone fireplace. A nondesignated
campsite!! What a great place for
a federal crime. We had only to
pitch a tent to guarantee ourselves
a place in yet another federal
computer!
And pitch we did. Within ten
minutes we were breaking two
federal statutes I know of, proba-
bly in addition to scores I've
never even dreamed of. With that
criminal act out of our systems,
we ate, went to sleep, and awaited
the clampdown.
It arrived early the next morn-
ing during breakfast in the form
of a Forest Service motorboat
bearing Ranger Kevin Welsh. A
'60's refugee from the looks of
him, Welsh now gets kicks out of
serving papers on eveyone in
sight, in effect, out of doing Jim
Watt's dirty work in the North
Woods.
He explained, as goons are
wont to do, that he was letting us
off easy by fining us $50 for
camping at a nondesignated site.
I gave serious considerationto hit-
ting him over the head with
something heavy @ breaking for
Canada, a mere two miles distant,
but I thought better of it. When
you're nailed, you're nailed.
We paddled the remaining
miles that morning, got in the
van, and drove for fdteen hours in
a contemplative, ashamed silence.
What had forced me to do it?
Was it society? Was it me? Was it
blind fate? And why did we get
busted? Was it our carelessness?
Was it Kevin Welsh's amazing
talent as a detective? Was it that
"Dump Watt" petition I signed in
June?

tually ignored for the past five
years. Their current single release
"Should I Stay or Should I Go? ,"
differs from earlier material only
in its lack of political rhetoric
(perhaps the change in subject
matter has finally made their
powerful, early Stones-like sound
suitable for airplay).
Taken as a whole on Combat
Rock, though, the Clash have lost
none of their political convic-
tions. "Know Your Rights," the
first cut on the record sounds as if
it is trying to make up for
"Should I Stay . . . ?" in a long,
tedious political rap composed
mostly of warmed over ironic
reflections on life in a "free"
society. Unfortunately, the song
is pretty bad, and the message is
lost in a beat-oriented musical
fog.
But the band makes a strong
comeback on side one with "Car
.
Jamming," "Should I Stay . . ?"
and the playfully funky criticism
of Iranian "revolution," "Rock
the Casbah." An annoyingly
harsh "Red Angel Dragnet" is
immediately followed by
"'Straight to Hell," a haunting and
disturbingly beautiful treatise on
the plight of the post-war Viet-
namese.
The flipside is highlighted by
"Overpowered by Funk" (pretty
much self-explanatory) and an
appearance by Beat poet Alan
Ginsberg on "Ghetto Defendant."
"Death is a Star," the final track,
could be the Clash's best yet. It
must be heard.

Rolling Stone Magazine call it a
"masterpiece," and, all critical
hoopla aside, Elvis Costello and
the Attractions' Imperial Bed-
room is extremely good. Costello
has finally relaxed enough to feel
comfortable in the easier style of
his past few records, and the re-
sult is the first really solid Elvis
album in years.
The first side opens with
"Beyond Belief," a song which
can only be called great. Well
worth the price of the entire
album, the tune showcases Costel-
lo's new found vocal strength over
a tasteful Attractions%enerated
background .
After the first song, the rest of
the record could very well have
been a let down, but it is not.
Both Costello and his backing trio
seem to have reached a new tech-
nical peak, delivering unexpec-
tedly complex licks song after
song.
Perhaps Costello's choice of a
new produoer, Geoff Emerick,
was a wise move; Elvis' once pre-
valent (and somewhat lacking)
guitar work has been buried in the
mix in favor of his greatly im-
proved singing talent. What
emerges is the best of all worlds;
the instrumental technique of the
Attractions and Costello's innova-
tive vocal phrasing combine to
show off his lyrics as never be-
fore.

On the whole, the Clash's of-
fering could be described as
"good." Not quite as memorable
as their earlier work, but well
worth buying. As for Imperial
Bedroom, only time will tell if it
is to be rightly deemed a "master-
piece."

found that it's not that easy. It's
hard to not be at least a little
excited when we think of a l l we
have to look forward to. It's
events like the senior breakfast
this past Tuesday that make
school that much easier to come
to and the upcoming year some-
thing to look forward to.
We are continuing our Big
BrotherIBig Sister program to
make IH's newest students feel at

dent Government booth set up by
this Tuesday. The booth is de-
signed to inform students of up-
coming SG events, and we hope
the student body wdl take advan-
tage of it.
Already, the individual classes
have begun planning projects like
class floats, prom, etc. We en-
courage all students to ask around
and find out what needs to be
done to make these undertakings
a success.

Losing 13 seniors, an average
team might hope for a .500 sea-
son but not Indian Hill's varsity
soccer team. Under new head
coach Randy Stertmeyer and his
assistants Jim Vockell and Jack
Niehaus, the Braves are aiming to
repeat as league champions. If
the players are able to stay clear
of injuries, Stertmeyer feels,
"We've got a real shot at it."
Stertmeyer, Niehaus, and
Vockell are all Indian Hill resi-
dents who have jobs that they
joke are only "hobbies." When
asked why he took the coaching
job, Stertmeyer replied, "I believe
in the sport and the school sys-
tem. We're fortunate to have the
opportunity." All three coaches
feel they are fortunate in having a
type of job that allows so much
time off. All three have been
involved in athletics for a long

swered, "They're a hell of a lot
more fun. It makes you stay

The Braves opened camp
August 2nd with conditioning
which lasted two weeks. More
than fifty young men appeared
ready to "want, work, and win"
again this year. Having lost all
three goalkeepers, the team hopes
Andy Hall can lead the defense
this season. The midfield is the
stronghold of this year's team led
by captains Jeff Graham and Dan
Greene. The offense is looking
for leadership from seniors
Dwight Poffenberger and Ron
Zesch to put many Mr. Balls into
Mr. Net.

The team's biggest problem
will be a lack of players. The
number of players has been
temporarily cut from nine to
eight by an injury, and seven
people are needed for each match.

Thompson is a University of Cin-
cinnati student and has played
collegiate soccer. Thompson
seems to love the work so far and
says of his players, "They are as
good a group of kids as you'll
find." He feels the first couple
games are important to develop
the confidence of his very young
team. Asked about his goal this
season, Thompson joked, "If we
don't go 17-0,I will resign."
With the new coaching staff,
the Braves hope to develop many
young players but also complete a
successful season. One thing is
certain at Indian Hill, soccer is
growing.
Coach Niehaus commented on
his new job, "We see some tre-
mendous talent coming up. It
will be a blast being part of it.

top for the parking lot, and new
equipment for the cafeteria.
In the cafeteria, new tables, a
french fry machine, and a juice
machine have been installed.
Feltman says scooped ice cream
will be available in the near fu-
ture.
Another addition to the
school is a new bulletin board to
be raised sometime before mid-
September. The bulletin board,
among other things, will list
teachers names along with their
room numbers in order to aid new
students.

The administration hired four
new teachers this summer for the
1982-83 school year. In addition,
four Ottawa teachers will instruct
classes in both the junior high and
the high school.
The new teachers are Robert
Girton, Dan North, Sherry Ran-
dall, and Ron Weitzenkorn.
The teachers from the junior
high are Robert Blaney of the
French department, Greg Hay-
ward of the social studies depart-
ment, Jeff Icsman of the English
department, and Charles Wojcik
of the jcience department.
Robert Girton, the new social
studies teacher, says he was at-
tracted to Indian Hill because of

Dayton and enjoys traveling,
camping, and gardening.

high school bands in Wisconsin
and Indiana. He received his
degree in music at Ball State Uni-
versity.
"I think the faculty and ad-
ministration is the most courteous
and friendly I've ever met," said
choir teacher Sherry Randall.
Randall is replacing Mr. Henry
Henley while he is on his sabbati-
cal. Randall has previously taught
at Sycamore High School and
Landmark Christian School.
Indian Hill is offering its last
German class this year due to lack
faculty, and administrators to
investigate the opportunities
available to the district. The
committee was headed by Dr.
Bryan Moore, curriculum director
of the school district.
According to Dr. Moore the
committee reported back t o the
Board in March with recommen-
dations regarding what types of
hardware (i-e. computers, print-
ers, etc.) and software (i.e. pro-
grams) would be needed. The
Board agreed to fmance the pro-
ject on the sole condition that the
school tax levy passed on June 8.
When the levy passed, the
committee began working o n the
specifics of the , computer pack-
age. On August 10 the Board of
Education officially all0cated
approximately $38,000 for the
purchase of fifteen Apple I1
computers - seven to be placed in
the high school, five in Ottawa,
and three at Wyandot.
"One of our goals is to get our
faculty exposed to the ways com-
puters can help them in instruct-
ing students," commented Dr.

Weitzenkorn is teaching the
German I1 course which will en-
able last year's German students
to meet college requirements.
Weitzenkorn went to Vander-
bilt University for undergraduate
studies. He then went to Indiana
University in pursuit of his mas-
ter's degree. When asked about
his hobbies Weitzenkorn replied,
"I like sports."
Miss Martha Selzer who went
on her sabbatical last year is re-
turning to the English depart-
ment.

Several changes greeted IHers
this year at the high school.
One of the more obvious
changes was the schedule change.
The administration added four
minutes onto each class period in
order to meet state requirements.
According to Dr. Karl Felt-
Moore. "Another goal is t o give
our eigth grade students as well as
our future graduating seniors
basic knowledge in the field of
computers."
To accomplish this, instruc-
tion will be given to fifth graders
in Wyandot and eigth graders in
Ottawa on the capabilities and
impact of computers. '
For the future, the administra-
tion plans not only to increase the
number of "computer literacy
units" but also to put the present
computers in use more often. For
the frrst semester approximately
65 students will be using the eight
high school computers during
three class periods per day.
In the years to come the com-
puters will be used during all pe-
riods of the day not only for
classes in programming, but also
as instructional aids for students
and teachers. Another plan for
the future is to link up a "net-
work" for the computers so that
tge high school and Ottawa can
share a resource room for the
computers.
