MEASUREMENT EQUIPMENT

1. General
Before mounting the M 1031 C analyser you must read the instructions. An authorized person must carry out mounting of the analyser. Type M 1031 C analyser is a measuring instrument operating on the basis of the amperometric method. It is used for measuring free chlorine concentration in water in various dosing fields such as: Drinking water Pool water Treatment of industrial and sewage water The analyser is always purchased together with all accompanying elements that are necessary for quick and functional installation of the measuring system (armature of the sink, installation inserted pieces, screws, ball tap, drilling templates) The analyser has been designed for continuous operation.

MEASUREMENT EQUIPMENT

2. Basic principles of the ampere-metric chlorine measurement

2.1Diagram showing level of HOCL acid depending on PH and temperature General: Currently there are two methods for determining/measuring chlorine in use: Chlorometric determining Electronic measuring (amperometrics) Chlorometric determining is mainly used for checking and calibration. DPD method is still used in public swimming pools (reagent: N,n-dietil-p-fenildiamin). Chlorometric determining is not appropriate for continuous checking and automatic chlorination. Measuring is in such cases executed via electronic measuring, with the amperometric method, with the measuring cell for chlorine and the appropriate measuring and regulating instrument. We need to differentiate between free and combined chlorine. The term total chlorine is usually related to the chlorine in water, consisting of the elemental chlorine Cl2, hypochloric acid (HOCl), hypochloric ion (ClO), and of a combination of the above. With short reaction periods these forms of chlorine are capable of destroying bacteria, viruses and oxidising organic substances. The term combined chlorine is usually related to the chlorine in water, which is chained to chlorine compounds with ammoniac (NH3) or ammoniac ion (NH4+). The term total chlorine means free and combined chlorine together. Free chlorine is measured via amperometric measuring. The result of hypochloric acid (HOCl) is the disinfection of water. This acid is split into hypochloric ion (ClO) and hydrogen ion (H+), depending on the PH value of the water. The diagram below clearly shows that the share of hypochloric acid decreases when the PH value increases. E.g., at PH value 9 the share of hypochloric acid drops to approx. 3 %, as compared to 97 % at PH 6. 2.2 Diagram showing level of HOCL acid depending from pH and temperature

3. Mounting
3.1Determining the optimal place of installation Mount the analyser as close as possible to the place of taking water sample and in an easily accessible place in order to make the mounting undisturbed. The outlet connection of the armature of the analyser sink must always be higher than the main drainage outlet (the outlet tap should never rise above the height of the armature of the analyser sink).

3.2

Drilling holes in the wall

Place the enclosed template (code SABXXXXX) for drilling holes against the wall (pay attention to the first angle). With help of the template drill 3 holes with a diameter d8 and depth 60 mm into the wall. Insert the enclosed PVC wall plugs d8 into the holes. Insert three enclosed screws with the length of 70 mm into the wall plugs and leave approx. 12 mm of the screw unfastened (unturned). 3.3 Placing

Hang the analyser on the three screws and check the stability of the installation.

4. The level of free-running sample water

4.1 Pools

The minimal level of free-running sample water is: 1 m of the water column above the level of the analyser. When the minimal level of free-running sample water is not possible, take the sample with the help of a pump. 4.2 Water supplies

When you are taking the water sample, of which the pressure exceeds 6 bars, insert a reducing valve and set it to 1 bar.

6. Connecting the inlet and outlet pipes of sample water

Before connecting the analyser, you must wash out the inlet pipes. Connect the inlet pipe d10/d8 of the sample water to the inlet connector of the analyser. The regulating valve serves as a regulating element (setting of water flow through the analyser). Install an outlet pipe with a diameter of d20 mm on the outlet end of the outlet armature. The sample water flow through the analyser is set by means of the regulating valve. Sample water flow through both outlet pipes of the analyser must be even. The sample water usage is 0.7 l per minute.

7. Connecting to power supply

Connect the M1031C analyser to a voltage of 24 VAC (+/- 10%), 50 - 60 Hz. Connect the voltage through the 5-pole connector on ECP00266 cable to the connector on the instrument (CONNECTION). All such connectors have a code indicator and can therefore only be connected if turned the right way. The connectors on the cable are to be gently and correctly put on the connectors on the instrument and the fixing nut is to be gently turned.
Power
NELA0001

Connector CONNECTION serves to connect voltage and signalling communication, varying from the execution of the instrument. According to the execution, a version with CAN communication and current loop can be supplied.

10.1 SeleCAN All CAN communication units (PLC control units, sensors, valves) in SELECAN versions of communication must have parallel wiring. The maximum number of CAN communication units connected in this way must not exceed 64. CAN network consists of three signals: CAN H (CAN +), CAN L (CAN -) and CAN GND. 10.2 Segmental circuit (RECOMMENDED!) The most recommended wiring is shown in the drawing below. The main communication line is divided into segments. CAN communication units A - I (PLC control units, sensors, valves) are connected via CAN distributors 1 - 6. Terminators (T), which are connected to CAN H (CAN +) and CAN L (CAN -), must be placed at the beginning and at the end.

The main CAN network is divided into more segmental networks. When dividing the main CAN network into segmental networks, you must pay attention to the length of the segment; the length of the segment depends on data flow velocity. One segment is marked in the picture above and in the tables on the following page total cable length can be determined. The tables are stated for cables with 5 ns/m and 10 ns/m time delay. It is evident from the table below that when using a cable with 5ns/m time delay and data flow velocity of 20Kbit/s, the total segment length can be up to 150 m; the length of the cable made of all in this way connected segments must not exceed 750 m. The length of the cable, which is used to connect CAN distributors 1 and 2 and all CAN communication units plugged to CAN distributor 2 (PLC control units, sensors, valves), is considered the total segment length. Unscrew the sample input at the M1031C analyser and connect it through the MXXX charcoal filter. Pay attention to the proper flow direction of the sample water running through the before mentioned filter. We need some additional pressure at the beginning, to keep the sample water running through the MXXX charcoal filter (the flow through the M1031C analyser should be even). Keep the sample running through the MXXX charcoal filter for at least ten minutes. The measured value should not exceed 0.05 mgCl 2/l. In case the value exceeds 0.05 mgCl2/l, clean the charcoal filter as well as the input filter on the M1031C analyser. In case that the value is still above 0.05 mgCl2/l, please, consult with the authorised service of the CONTROLMATIK ABW. 15.3 Setting the value: Before calibrating for the first time, we must keep the M1031C analyser running for at least 24 hours. Because of the various water structures, the analyser works properly only when the measuring cell has oxidised correctly. Then we can set the analyser and keep it running for a week and then we calibrate it again. Keep the set analyser running and calibrate after a week. Always repeat the procedure after the measuring cell has been serviced and in case the M1031C analyser has not been running for more than a week. When you are calibrating the analyser this time, we recommend that you take notes of the values at specific levels. The data will be of great help when you are calibrating the M1031C analyser later on.
