The Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT).

Detailed Assessment of Speed of Handwriting (DASH 17+).

The assessment includes five subtests, each testing a different aspect of handwriting speed. The subtests examine fine motor and precision skills, the speed of producing well known symbolic material, the ability to alter speed of performance on two tasks with identical content and free writing competency. The DASH 17+ provides a reliable, age-appropriate measure of handwriting speed for students aged 17-25 years in further and higher education. Word Reading - measures letter and word decoding through letter identification and word recognition. Sentence Comprehension - measures an individual's ability to gain meaning from words and to comprehend ideas and information contained in sentences through the use of a modified close technique. Visual stress assessment.

Sometimes a student may report symptoms of visual stress (distortion of text, eyestrain and headache) that they experience when reading and which can be alleviated by using coloured card or coloured filters. Two identical passages of text of appropriate size are used, side by side, over which overlays can be placed and compared.
