Designation of walking trails

CZECH MOUNTAINS ARE COLOURED AND SAFE

What is unique about all Czech mountains? The fact that you cannot get lost there! You can roam around the picturesque landscape of Czech mountains without being worried that you might get lost. Every walking trail has been assigned its own colour blue, red, yellow or green. At crossings, you just follow your colour. The trails are designated by the same colours in tourist maps. The Czech Tourist Club takes great care of the dense network of marks. There are so many of them placed on trees, stones or other objects that in most locations you see one within a visible distance from the other. At fork-ways and places of importance, you can also find signposts which show you the right direction and tell you how many kilometers are still left to your destination. For the sake of completeness, we can assure you that in Czech mountains you will not meet any dangerous animals. The only and very rare exception is bear that might stray into the deep forests of the Beskydy Mountains along the Slovakian border. However, the chance of meeting a bear is practically zero.

Krkonoe Mountains
the best of Czech mountains
The Krkonoe Mountains are suitable for:
The Krkonoe Mountains are the highest Czech mountain range. From every corner of the foothills even from a birds eye view, the Krkonoe Mountains panorama is magnificent. The tops are unmistakable; it seems that each mountain has its own face clearly distinguishable even by an occasional visitor. The border mountain range is distinct, here and there with rocks having poetic names (Dv, Musk, ensk kameny Girls, Men, Women Stones), otherwise the tops are bare, covered with grass and meadows with wild flowers. In some places, the mountain crests fall down the valleys (Snn jmy, Labsk dl) completing the dramatic picture of the landscape.

The extensive recreational zone around Lipno lake hosts thousands of visitors every summer, from families with children to lovers of windsurfing and yachting. Anyone interested in sport will find a real paradise in umava. A great number of natural and historical monuments have been made accessible thanks to a dense network of cycle paths. In the past, the communications network used for the purpose of the frontier protection was passable only by military vehicles. Now, the narrow but high-quality paths are available to cyclists. The most popular paths are found in the surroundings of Horsk Kvilda, towards the Vltava river source and in the region of Kapersk Hory. For tourists whose physical condition is not perfect, there is the area of umava plains with a minimum amount of elevation changes.

Do you travel down rivers?

Then the South Bohemian region is the right place for you. There are many places where you can hire a kayak or canoe and let out your adrenaline on the Vltava, Otava or Vydra rivers.

Tips for your trips

Plen lake and Plech
Plen lake (Plen jezero) is one of the typical glacial lakes found in umava. A steep, nearly 300 m high wall towers above its surface. We recommend starting in Nov Pec, following the yellow mark and going up to the top of Plech, which is the highest peak of the Czech part of umava (1,378 m). The trail back to Plen lake follows an extraordinary impressive nature trail titled Ghost of the Primaeval Forest. Walking through a wild forest with no human interventions up the steep slopes is a real adventure.

Povyd
The part of the Vydra river between Antgl and ekova pila full of stones creates breath-taking scenery of wild cataracts with cascades, huge boulders and hollowed giant pots.

Jezern sla (Lake Moor)

Moors are a typical feature of the umava landscape. The upland moors accessible from Kvilda with their remarkable flora and fauna are here for you via a short nature trail.

And not only for them. Everybody who is either dependent on or addicted to wheels can walk in the mountains equally. The countryside of the Jizersk Mountains offers a sufficient number of paths with smooth surface which can be used either for long trips with a pram or by those who wish to enjoy themselves while equipped with a wheelchair or a hand bike. Like a sharp point, Jetd mountain towers above the North Bohemian city of Liberec. The mountain, visible from a great distance, gives you an impression of an isolated dominating peak guarding its city at its bottom. A keen observer will notice that the impressive appearance of the mountain is highlighted by the structure on the top of it Jetd, the renowned hotel and transmitter, a pearl of modern architecture, which has won a number of international awards. The smart spike of the structure prolongs the natural line of the mountain and adds the finishing touch to its appearance.

In the deciduous woods, there are small bunkers or larger fortresses hidden almost every kilometer, which were built shortly prior to 1938 for the purpose of defence of the Czechoslovak Republic. The fortresses were never used in the World War II. However, they have been preserved to this day as a silent memento of the turbulent times, nowadays maintained by volunteers or changed into museums.

Krun Mountains
The Krun Mountains are suitable for:
The mountains with the most eventful history became a popular tourist destination not long ago. Over the course of time, the mountains underwent unexpected changes. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the mountains were very busy: the silver and tin mines produced coins thalers, which gave name to todays US dollars. The discovery of uranium deposits resulted in involuntary work of approximately 15,000 in particular political prisoners in the 1950s who were extracting uranium intended for the Soviet nuclear experiments near spa town of Jchymov. The subsequent extensive mining for coal and the development of power plants in the Mostecko region resulted in extensive devastation of the forests in the 1970s and 1980s. In spite of all the aforementioned events, surprised visitors are welcomed by beautiful young larch and birch forests with unfrequented forest cycle paths where you can teach your children to ride a bike.

Adrpasko-teplick rocks (Adrpasko-teplick skly)

A minor rock area near the Polish border. It is a renowned mountaineering area. If you follow the tourist mark, children in particular will enjoy the trail. Each rock has its own symbolic name (Babiina lenoka (Grandmas sofa), Cukrov homole (Sugar loaf), Rytsk pilbice (Knights helm), etc. and it may be funny to look for them among the rocks shapes. A romantic and undemanding trail around the rock towns of Adrpach with small lakes and waterfalls, which can be livened up by boat ride around the lake in the middle of the rocks.
