8.1 Square Root Property and Completing the Square 8.2 Quadratic Formula 8.3 Equations in Quadratic Form 8.4 Graphs of Quadratic Functions 8.5 Vertex of a Parabola and Applications
In Chapter 8 we revisit quadratic equations. In earlier chapters, we solved quadratic equations by factoring and applying the zero product rule. In this chapter, we present two additional techniques to solve quadratic equations. However, these techniques can be used to solve quadratic equations even if the equations are not factorable. Complete the word scramble to familiarize yourself with the key terms for this chapter. As a hint, there is a clue for each word.

The function is in the form g 1x2 a1x h2 2 k, where a 1, 7 h 2, and k . Therefore, the vertex 4 is 1 2, 7 2 . 4 b. The graph of g is the same as the graph of y x2 shifted to the left 2 units, shifted down 7 4 units, and opening downward (Figure 8-15). c. The axis of symmetry is the line x d. 1. Writing a Quadratic Function in the Form f(x) a(x h)2 k 2. Vertex Formula 3. Determining the Vertex and Intercepts of a Quadratic Function 4. Vertex of a Parabola: Applications
A quadratic function can be expressed as f1x2 ax bx c 1a 02. However, by completing the square, we can write the function in the form f1x2 a1x h2 2 k. In this form, the vertex is easily recognized as (h, k). The process to complete the square in this context is similar to the steps outlined in Section 8.1. However, all algebraic steps are performed on the right-hand side of the equation. Example 1 Given: f 1x2 x2
a. f 1x2
x2 11x2 11x2
8x

8x2 8x
13 2 13
Rather than dividing by the leading coefficient on both sides, we will factor out the leading coefficient from the variable terms on the right-hand side. Next, complete the square on the expression within the parentheses: 3 1 182 4 2 16. 2 13 Rather than add 16 to both sides of the function, we add and subtract 16 within the parentheses on the right-hand side. This has the effect of adding 0 to the right-hand side.
Avoiding Mistakes:
Do not factor out the leading coefficient from the constant term.

Follow these steps to solve a quadratic equation in the form ax2 bx c 0 1a 02 by completing the square and applying the square root property: 1. Divide both sides by a to make the leading coefficient 1. 2. Isolate the variable terms on one side of the equation. 3. Complete the square: Add the square of one-half the linear term coefficient to both sides of the equation. Then factor the resulting perfect square trinomial. 4. Apply the square root property and solve for x.
