LIVING HISTORYAre your kids interested in history? Do they like to learn about people and events of the past? Do they like to pretend to be those people or live in that time period? Then the multi-county 4-H Living History program might be for your kids. This is an excellent program for home school youth or public schooled children, who are ages seven and older, to explore their heritage, community, and expand their knowledge of local history. The program is a four part series where youth will 1) explore living history, 2) choose a person or time period they are interested in, 3) research and learn about that person or era, and 4) participate in a Living History Fair where youth will share what they have learned with others. Cornell Cooperative Extensions 4-H Youth Development program will be facilitating this 4 part series starting on Tuesday, January 8, at 6:30pm at the Hudson Falls Public Library (tentative). The second session will be held Tuesday, January 22, 6:30pm at the Hudson Falls Public Library. The Third & Fourth Session will be determined at a later date. Please contact John Bowe, 4-H Team Leader for more information 518-623-3291 or 668-4881.

Come ring in 2013 at the New York State Military Museum! Well have two great musical groups here to celebrate the evening. Al and Kathy Bain are well-known country entertainers with years of experience in live radio, TV, stage shows, and dances. Their specialty is entertaining their audience. Al and Kathy trade off vocals and harmony, with Kathy on upright bass and Al on Travis-style guitar and 5-string banjo. They will perform at 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm. Jeff Brisbin is a songwriters songwriter. His music will resonate within you. They always tell a story; sometimes you might wonder if hes telling your story. When he covers a song, he makes it his own, and when he plays you one of his originals, hell touch your heart. He will perform at 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm. 10 CATCHPHRASES WE DONT WANT TO HEAR AGAIN IN 2013 Hollywood.com reported on the 10 catchphrases we dont want to hear again in 2013, including Guy Fieris Flavortown, USA!, May the odds be ever in your favor! from the Hunger Games, Game of Thrones Winter is coming!, and YOLO! (you only live once). At Toastmasters, we have a role called the Ah Counter. Their responsibility during a meeting is to listen for catchphrases we call verbal stutters or crutch words. People use these when theyre nervous or have lost their train of thought, HollyAnn Carbino, VP of Education stated. Listening for ahs, ums, sos, you knows, and other crutch words makes the speakers aware of how often they use them as well as teaching the Ah Counter to hear their own in everyday speech. If youd like to get rid of your personal speaking hangups, we invite you to see what Toastmasters has to offer by visiting Washington County Toastmasters. He is mellow, friendly, sweet, and gentle. He loves to be held and would make a great lap cat. He would love his new home an indoor only home. If you are looking for the perfect cat to complete your family please come meet Tommy Boy. Gizmo came into Second Chance with his brother Hunter because their owners could no longer afford to care for them. They are both inside/outside cats but an indoor only home would be better. Their previous owners said they were both good with dogs and other cats but they a bit on the shy side. If you think Gizmo and Hunter would be the perfect addition to your home please ask a staff member for more information. Ashley is a petite spayed female tabby. She is very shy and needs some extra TLC for her new family. She is independent and can be friendly once she is comfortable. She would love a quiet home and a home that allows her to be an indoor/outdoor kitty. Since she came to us from a farm living that might be just what she needs again. So if you are looking for a kitty to complete your home and Ashley sounds perfect please come meet her.

Welcome to 2013, as we enter the New Year many of us are thinking about our waistlines. How can milk help? Milk and milk products are a great choice because they are loaded with nutrients including calcium, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, protein, vitamins A, D and B12, and riboflavin When you are thinking dinner, many of us enjoy a creamy base to our food this time of year. White Sauce is the base sauce used as an ingredient in the preparation of many casseroles, soups, gravies and sauces. We can make it low fat by choosing fat free and low fat milk. The sauce can be thinned or thickened by subtracting or adding 1 tablespoon each of butter or flour.

BASIC WHITE SAUCE: 2 tablespoons butter; 2 tablespoons flour; 1/2 teaspoon salt; 1 cup fat free or low fat milk. Melt butter in a pan and whisk in flour and salt until smooth. Gradually stir in cold milk, cooking and stirring until sauce boils; reduce heat and stir until sauce becomes smooth and thick. When sauce thickens, simmer for an additional 10 minutes over very low heat, stirring occasionally. We enjoy adding a lean meat or veggies to our sauce and having it over whole wheat pasta. CHEESE SAUCE: Stir in 1/4 - 1 whole cup of grated low fat sharp Cheddar or Monterey Jack. Stir until cheese melts. NACHO SAUCE: One quarter cup of chopped jalapeno peppers may be added for Nacho cheese sauce. SOUR CREAM SAUCE: Add one half cup fat free sour cream and 1 teaspoon each of chopped fresh chives and dill and serve as a topping for baked potatoes. Info:518-663-5220

Blinkys Random Thoughts

At the animal shelter they told me the big black Lab's name was Reggie. At first, I thought the shelter had misjudged me in giving me Reggie and his things, which consisted of a dog pad, bag of toys almost all of which were brand new tennis balls, his dishes and a sealed letter from his previous owner. See, Reggie and I didn't really hit it off when we got home. We struggled for two weeks (which is how long the shelter told me to give him to adjust to his new home). Maybe it was the fact that I was trying to adjust, too. Maybe we were too much alike. I saw the sealed envelope. I had completely forgotten about that. "Okay, Reggie," I said out loud, "let's see if your previous owner has any advice. "To Whomever Gets My Dog: Well, I can't say that I'm happy you're reading this, a letter I told the shelter could only be opened by Reggie's new owner. I'm not even happy writing it. He knew something was different. So let me tell you about my Lab in the hopes that it will help you bond with him and he with you. First, he loves tennis balls. The more the merrier. Sometimes I think he's part squirrel, the way he hoards them. He usually always has two in his mouth, and he tries to get a third in there. Hasn't done it yet. Doesn't matter where you throw them, he'll bound after them, so be careful. Don't do it by any roads. Next, commands. Reggie knows the obvious ones ---"sit," "stay," "come," "heel." He knows hand signals, too: He knows "ball" and "food" and "bone" and "treat" like nobody's business. Feeding schedule: twice a day, regular store-bought stuff; the shelter has the brand. He's up on his shots. Be forewarned: Reggie hates the vet. Good luck getting him in the car. I don't know how he knows when it's time to go to the vet, but he knows. Finally, give him some time. It's only been Reggie and me for his whole life. He's gone everywhere with me, so please include him on your daily car rides if you can. He sits well in the backseat, and he doesn't bark or complain. He just loves to be around people, and me most especially. And that's why I need to share one more bit of info with you...His name's not Reggie. He's a smart dog, he'll get used to it and will respond to it, of that I have no doubt. But I just couldn't bear to give them his real name. But if someone is reading this ... well it means that his new owner should know his real name. His real name is "Tank." Because, that is what I drive. I told the shelter that they couldn't make "Reggie" available for adoption until they received word from my company commander. You see, my parents are gone, I have no siblings, no one I could've left Tank with ... and it was my only real request of the Army upon my deployment to Iraq, that they make one phone call to the shelter ... in the "event" ... to tell them that Tank could be put up for adoption. Luckily, my CO is a dog-guy, too, and he knew where my platoon was headed. He said he'd do it personally. And if you're reading this, then he made good on his word. Tank has been in my family for the last six years, almost as long as the Army has been my family. And now I hope and pray that you make him part of your family, too, and that he will adjust and come to love you the same way he loved me. If I have to give up Tank to keep those terrible people from coming to the US I am glad to have done so. He is my example of service and of love. I hope I honored him by my service to my country and comrades. All right, that's enough. I deploy this evening and have to drop this letter off at the shelter. Maybe I'll peek in on him and see if he finally got that third tennis ball in his mouth. Good luck with Tank. Give him a good home, and give him an extra kiss goodnight - every night - from me. Thank you, Paul Mallory I folded the letter and slipped it back in the envelope. Sure, I had heard of Paul Mallory, everyone in town knew him, even new people like me. Local kid, killed in Iraq a few months ago and posthumously earning the Silver Star when he gave his life to save three buddies. Flags had been at half-mast all summer. I leaned forward in my chair and rested my elbows on my knees, staring at the dog. "Hey, Tank," I said quietly. The dog's head whipped up, his ears cocked and his eyes bright. "C'mere boy." He was instantly on his feet, his nails clicking on the hardwood floor. He sat in front of me, his head tilted, searching for the name he hadn't heard in months. "Tank," I whispered. His tail swished. I kept whispering his name, over and over, and each time, his ears lowered, his eyes softened, and his posture relaxed as a wave of contentment just seemed to flood him. I stroked his ears, rubbed his shoulders, buried my face into his scruff and hugged him. "It's me now, Tank, just you and me. Your old pal gave you to me." Tank reached up and licked my cheek. "So whatdaya say we play some ball?" His ears perked again. "Yeah? Ball? You like that? Ball?" Tank tore from my hands and disappeared into the next room. And when he came back, he had three tennis balls in his mouth.
