CHOI NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Adelaide Bite 1B Ji-Man Choi was named the Delta Air Lines Player of the Week for Round Eight in the Australian Baseball League on Dec. 27. Choi has hit safely in each of his last 5 games, batting .350 (7x20) with 3 runs scored, 1 double, 1 triple, 2 home runs and 5 RBI. He has also hit safely in 15 of his last 18 games with 6 multi-hit games, batting .362 (25x69) with 10 runs scored, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 5 home runs and 15 RBI. During this stretch he has raised his season average from .176 to .326. Overall, Choi is batting .326 (28x86) with 15 runs scored, 10 extra-base hits (4-2B, 3B, 5-HR) and 17 RBI in 24 games in the ABL. GUTI! GUTI! GUTI!: OF Franklin Gutierrez hit safely in each of the last 4 games he has appeared (Dec. 18-21), including 3 multi-hit games. During this stretch he hit .474 (9x17) with 4 runs scored, 2 doubles, 2 home runs and 10 RBI. He set a season-high with 5 home runs, including hitting a grand slam home run on Dec. 19 vs. Margarita (3x4, 2 R, 2B, HR, 5 RBI, BB). Overall, Guti is batting .349 (30x86) with 13 runs scored, 6 doubles, 3 home runs and 19 RBI in 22 games with Caracas in the VWL. ABL ALL-STAR GAME: Team Australia have defeated the World All-Stars in the 2012 Conoco Phillips Australian Baseball League AllStar Game 6-4 on Dec. 15 at Melbourne Ballpark. 1B Ji-Man Choi (0x2, 2 BB, K) and RHP Seon Gi Kim (1.0,1,0,0,0,0) represented the Mariners on the World Squad. MiL AWARDS: Minor League Baseball and the Topps Company announced that Jackson second baseman Stefen Romero was selected to the Topps Double-A All-Star Team. He hit .352 (167x474) with 85 runs scored, 64 extra-base (2B- 34, 3B - 7, HR - 23) and 101 RBI in 116 games combined between A High Desert and AA Jackson. Romero finished 3rd amongst all full season minor leaguers in average and was named to the 2012 Baseball America Second-Team All-Star team as a second baseman. Catcher John Hicks was selected to Topps Class A All-Star Team, while catcher Mike Zunino was named to the Topps Short Season-A/Rookie All-Star Team. Hicks was among the top 10 players in the California League in hits (158, 4th), doubles (32, 5th), batting average (.312, 9th) and runs scored (87, 10th). He threw out 54% of the runners trying to steal a base to lead all Class A backstops. In his first professional season, Zunino hit .360 (58151) with 35 runs, 14 doubles, 13 home runs and 43 RBI in 44 combined between Short-A Everett and Jackson. AFL TOP PROSPECT: Catcher Mike Zunino and infielder Nick Franklin were choosen to the 2012 Arizona Fall League's Top Prospects Team. Franklin hit .338 (26x77) with 13 runs, 6 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs and 22 RBI in 20 games with the Javelinas. Zunino reached base safely in 18 of 19 games, batting .288 (23x80) with 10 runs, 4 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs and 15 RBI. Franklin led the Javelinas and ranked 2nd in the AFL with 22 RBI, while Zunino finished T2nd on the team with 15 RBI. Zunino (#3), Franklin (#10) and James Paxton (#25) were touted by MLB.coms Jonathan Mayo as top Arizona Fall League prospects. OF NOTE: RH Carson Smith went 1-1 with a 2.40 ERA (4 ER, 15.0 IP) in 11 relief appearances with Peoria. He finished 5th on the Javelinas roster in innings, including leading all relievers. Smith allowed only 1 earned run in first 10.1 innings (0.87 ERA), including 7.1 scoreless innings from Oct. 17-31, before allowing 3 runs over his final 4 games to raise ERA from 0.87 to 2.40. INF Nick Franklin (1x3), C Mike Zunino (0x2) and LHP James Paxton (1.0,2,0,0,1,2) represented the Mariners on the West Division Rising All-Star squad. INF/OF Vinnie Catricala hit safely in his final 8 games with the Peoria Javelinas in the Arizona Fall League, batting .419 (13x31) with 4 runs scored, 3 doubles, 1 home run and 5 RBI. Overall he hit .279 (19x68) with 5 runs scored, 3 doubles, 2 home runs and 13 RBI. RHP Eramso Ramirez went 0-2 with a 4.30 ERA (7 ER, 14.2 IP) in 4 starts with Cardenales de Lara. Ramirez (1.2,4,5,4,2,1) recorded the loss in Nicaraguas 1-8 loss to Colombia on Nov. 2 in the WBC Qualifier #3. LHP Danny Fraquhar went 2-1 with 3 saves and a 1.50 ERA (4 ER, 24.0 IP) in 21 relief appearances with Lara in the VWL. He limited opponents to a .217 (20x92) with 6 walks and 30 strikeouts.
