I hav e receiv ed the following question from one of the readers of my blog: (The Question say s) I am not sure how much y ou hav e noticed, but in the West, their is a campaign to undermine y our personal credentials as an A lim. The all-too-common tactic of attack ing the messenger rather than the message itself is being employ ed in these campaigns. We want to be able to refute any false claims against y ou and support all of y our work s, wholeheartedly . Can y ou please prov ide us information regarding the Shuy uk h that y ou hav e learned under in the past, and who y ou may be currently learning under? A s well as, the source of y our ijaza, etc. This will be v ery important in refuting any slanderous attack s against y our credibility . (end of Question) I hav e receiv ed this question in v arious forms and the frequency of it increased lately . Here is my response: A lhamdulillah I hav e had the chance to experience the v arious methods of gaining Islamic k nowledge through study ing directly under shuy uk h in their general circles or priv ately . I hav e experienced the regular academic method of univ ersity study , study ing by correspondence, and study ing directly from book s.

Study ing under shuy uk h in their general circles:

I hav e attended the circles of the scholars of Mak k ah and Madina for a combined period of a few months and for a short while attended the circle of Shay k h Ibn Uthay meen.

Study ing under shuy uk h priv ately :

In addition to an ijaza in Quran recitation according to the recitation of Hafs I hav e read and completed Sahih al Buk hari with Shay k h A bdulRahman Shumailah al A hdal and he has giv en me ijazah to narrate Sahih al Buk hari from him through three high isnaads, one of them being the highest existing isnaad in the world. The other two he has receiv ed from his shuy uk h in Mak k ah.

I hav e also read and completed Sahih Muslim and al Muwata by Imam Malik with Shay k h A bdulRahman and he has giv en me ijazah on both book s.

I hav e studied al Minhaaj by Imaam Nawawi on Shafi fiqh with Shay k h A bdulRahman al A hdal and Shay k h Hamud al A hdal and receiv ed ijaza from both of them.

The abov e mentioned shuy uk h hav e also giv en me ijazah to narrate through their isnaad the six book s of Hadith, al A dhk aar by Imaam Nawawi, al Shifa by Qadhi Iy aad, and some other book s in Shafi fiqh.

I hav e studied, trav eled and liv ed with Shay k h Hassan al A hdal and it was through him that I got to study with other scholars from this blessed family of scholars who are descendants of al Hussain bin A li may A llah be pleased with them. They are based in al Marawaah in Tihama which is in the Western part of Yemen on the coast of the Red Sea and this is the land of the Sahabi A bu Musa al A shari. He has giv en me a general ijaza in the six book s of hadith, Buloogh al Maraam by Ibn Hajjar al A sqalani, Umdat al A hk aam by al Maqdisi, al Minhaaj by al Nawawi, al Ghay a wal Taqreeb by A bu Shuja, and al Waraqaat by al Juwaini.

I hav e spent a short time with Shay k h Salman al Odah.

I hav e benefited considerably from the scholars I met in the US during the 90s, a time in which there was a great influx of scholars in A merica.

A nd last but not least, I hav e benefited and continue to benefit from the Shay k h whom I trust his deen and k now him to be a scholar who does not fear in the sak e of A llah and is willing to stand up for the truth, Shay k h Hussein bin Mahfoodh. He is a friend whose relationship with me extends ov er the y ears. Until this day , I consult with him on the v arious important aspects of Sharia that I am presented with and I hav e continued to benefit from his k nowledge and wisdom ov er the y ears. I hav e accompanied him and trav eled with him and consider him to be one of the best scholars that I hav e come to k now.

Regular academic univ ersity study :

In 2002 I was giv en permission from the administration of the Univ ersity of Eman in Yemen to attend any class at any lev el and I took adv antage of this and attended classes in Tafsir and Fiqh for a period of a few months. I hav e also benefited from the teachings of Shay k h A bdul Majid al Zindani the Rector of the Univ ersity .

Study ing Sharia by Correspondence:

I studied for two y ears through correspondence with the Islamic univ ersity in France. I lost interest and discontinued my studies with them because I reached the conclusion that it was not a proper method of disseminating Islamic k nowledge. This was in the mid 90s so things must hav e changed now in the field of correspondence study due to adv ances in technology .

Study ing from Book s:

A fter receiv ing the basics from the scholars and the k ey s of k nowledge, learning from book s is a lifelong practice of the seek er of k nowledge.

My Ijazah:

In addition to the ijazas I hav e mentioned abov e I hav e a general ijaza in Quran, Sciences of Quran, Hadith, Sciences of Hadith, Tafsir , Fiqh, Usool Fiqh and A rabic from:

Shay k h Hassan Maqbooli al A hdal

Shay k h Hussein bin Mahfoodh

Shay k h A bdulRahman Shumailah al A hdal

Shay k h Hamud Shumailah al A hdal
