PULP AND PAPER BASKETS

Quality and Service Working Together

PULP AND PAPER

PULP AND PAPER SCREENS

Screen rooms in many mechanical pulp and paper mills are being rejuvenated today as a result of Johnson Screens significant breakthrough in screening technology with the fine-slotted Vee-Wire (wedge-wire) basket. This technology can yield significantly improved shive removal, enhance physical pulp properties, and, in some cases, reduce electrical power. The design of the Vee-Wire basket produces a continuous slot over the length of the basket. Vertical, parallel rods or wires are arranged in a circle to form a cylindrical shape. The wires are held mechanically in place with metal bands or rings. The size of the gap or slot between the wires is

precisely set. Typical values are 0.004 in., 0.006 in. and 0.008 in. (0.10 mm, 0.15 mm, and 0.20 mm). The angle of the wedge and the amount that the wedge protrudes into the stock (i.e., the profile) effects screen performance. By comparison, conventional slotted baskets are built from rolled sheet metal. Parallel slots, each several inches long, are cut into the sheet metal, leaving land areas between each slot to provide mechanical strength to the basket. The Vee-Wire basket, by virtue of the continuous slot and slender wires, has significantly less land area. This results in approximately twice the open area as the conventional basket for the same slot width.

For any given screen, this advantage yields the following benefits: Lower passing velocity for a given production rate and slot width. Higher production rate for a given slot width and passing velocity. Finer slots for a given production rate and passing velocity.

OUR GENERATION 3

FROM EXPERTISE AND INSPECTION, TO INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE.

The Generation 3 is constructed primarily for pulp and paper applications. Wires are mounted directly on notched support rings and robotically TIG welded in place. This dramatically increases the stress resistance of the screen compared to classic resistance welded screens. Notched support rings give the Generation 3 construction an exceptional reliability and reproducibility of all critical parameters (slot, relief angle). There are several steps to manufacturing a classic resistance welded wedge-wire screen: wrapping, splitting, re-rolling, welding and then adding reinforcing rings.

The Generation 3 construction reduces significantly the number of necessary manufacturing steps: The support rings are notched, the wires are mounted in these notches and then robotically TIG welded in place. We can help you select the optimal design for each of your process applications. Our engineers have over 20 years of experience in the pulp and paper industry.

CONTOURED WIRE CYLINDER

CONTOURED WIRE CYLINDERS HELP IMPROVE THE SCREENING EFFICIENCY OF SCREENING SYSTEMS.
Johnson Screens provides all models of inflow and outflow pressure screen cylinders. We offer slot widths down to 0.004 in. (0.10 mm), wire width down to 0.079 in. (2.0 mm) for 12 spi, and multiple contour depths are offered. And we offer pressure screens to suit many different types of machines.
Outflow Inflow

Johnson Screens has made extensive research in cylinder designs and wire contour design shapes. We focus on the optimum designs and wire shapes to provide cylinders that run with all rotor designs and pulp variations. Because of the many installed wire cylinders, the facts show that it has become the optimum cylinder to be installed in any pulp and paper pressure-screen system. Surface wear is a common cause of failure of milled and wire cylinders. It is important to protect the surface from wear due to the high levels of debris found during the screening

process. Johnson Screens uses a special chroming process to increase the thickness of the protective chrome layer and ensure a high hardness quality. Depending on the amount of debris, typically thicknesses are 0.006 in., 0.012 in. and 0.018 in. (0.15 mm, 0.30 mm and 0.45 mm). The results are a well-protected surface and less frequent cylinder replacement.

MILLED AND DRILLED

MILLED SLOTTED SCREEN CYLINDER

Contoured wire cylinders have replaced many traditional milled slotted cylinders to make existing systems more productive and efficient; but Johnson Screens can also provide a traditional milled slotted cylinder to replace an existing milled cylinder, if required.

DRILLED HOLE SCREEN CYLINDER

Not all screening systems require fine slotted screens. In some cases, the fine screens must be protected first by traditional drilled hole screens. Johnson Screens can provide both smooth plate and milled plate (contour) drilled hole cylinders. With the use of multi-axle drilling machines and the same manufacturing process that is used to produce the slotted cylinders, we can provide high productivity drilled hole cylinders. This flexibility ensures that you will receive the highest quality drilled hole cylinders to meet your needs.

05

EXTRACTION PLATES AND SCREW PRESS CYLINDER

JOHNSON SCREENS CAN PROVIDE ALL VARIATIONS OF SCREW PRESS CYLINDERS AND EXTRACTION PLATES FOR PULPERS, DETRASHERS, DEFLAKERS AND OTHER EQUIPMENT.
Materials for extraction plates include 304, 316, 410, and 420 SST, wear bars, chrome plating, heat treating of materials and flippable plates can help extend the life of your extraction plates.

We also offer all styles of screw press cylinders. High-strength drilled hole and Vee-Wire slotted designs are offered for increased open area, enhanced fiber retention and improved effluent clarity.
