Cal Water: Investor-Owned Water Utility

San Jose, California-based water utility uses AutoCAD LT 2D drawing software to help accelerate its design workflow.

Content. The entire story is displayed on the page as it currently appears. inside the TV viewer. However, the TV viewer and remote are not displayed.

Project Summary Cal Water provides water to residents and businesses in more than 100 communities in California. As an investor-owned utility in a highly regulated industry, the company strives to deliver excellent service to customers and value to shareholders. The companys 12 civil engineers play a key role in achieving those goals. They direct the design portions of Cal Waters capital improvement projects, including new storage tanks, distribution mains, pump stations, treatment plants, and more. The engineers work with 7 CAD drafting technicians who use AutoCAD software to develop detailed designs and construction documentation. To contribute their knowledge to the design process, the engineers turn to AutoCAD LT software. With AutoCAD LT software, the engineers can edit and annotate designs more easily. Cal Water values AutoCAD LT as an important part of its AutoCAD-based design workflow. Engineers typically initiate projects by quickly sketching the project parameters on paper or with AutoCAD LT. A drafting technician then turns to AutoCAD software to create the detailed design. Using AutoCAD LT, an engineer reviews the work, drafting minor changes directly into the design or annotating it with requests for major changes. Other methods of reviewing designs that Cal Water tried prior to adopting AutoCAD LT software, such as with paper printouts or view-only formats, did not allow engineers to edit details, manipulate layers, or replot designs. Drafting technicians had to apply all changes to designs, leading to additional rounds of reviews and wasted time. By using AutoCAD LT software in its AutoCAD-based design workflow, Cal Water believes it is able to: Save time on virtually every capital project Perform predesign that can be used later in the construction plans Accelerate the design process by reducing review cycles Connect engineers to designs using a simpler interface Reduce the risk of miscommunication About Cal Water California Water Service Companybetter known as Cal Wateris the second largest investor-owned water utility in the United States.
