A thing of beauty is joy forever

There is a saying "beauty is in the eyes of the beholder". What one individual considers beautiful may not be beautiful to another. To me, beauty is not only something that pleases the eyes, but also pleases the other senses and the mind. I think true beauty makes you see beyond the lovely sight. It will give you insight or realization of something interesting beyond just the outward appearance. When we talk about beauty in people. We often refer to their physical attractiveness. Of course, a beautiful or handsome face is pleasant to look at. But I find that the most memorable "beautiful people" are those who have captivating personalities behind the pretty faces There is another kind of beauty in people that attracts me greatly. This is what is known as inner beauty. People who have this kind of beauty have attained inner peace. They care about their fellow-man, and try to right the injustices in this world. Two well-known personalities who exemplify this are Nelson Mandela and Mother Theresa. Mandela was willing to sacrifice his life and freedom to obtain equal rights for the Blacks in South Africa. Mother's Theresa's mission is to help the poorest of the world's poor. In fact, even around me. I know some people who are always ready to lend a hand to a person in trouble. I greatly admire the beauty of these people because they are the ones who make the world a better place. This inner beauty. I notice, gives certain radiance to their looks. Beauty is a combination of qualities that delight the senses. It is an inborn instinct in human beings to appreciate beauty. Man has developed an eye for beauty right from the Stone Age. Artistic creations are mans attempt to depict the joy created by beauty. Man cherishes the beautiful moments and things in life. The imagination helps to revive and relive the happy moments spent in the company of beautiful things. Beauty abounds in nature. Poets and painters seek inspiration from beauty. The creations of sculptors, architects and musicians are appreciated by all. Spiritual beauty is something nobler and higher than physical beauty. The beautiful aspects of nature uplift the sprit of a pessimist. Beauty links man with eternity. A thing of beauty is a joy forever. Beauty gives a disembodied joy. In the experience of ordinary delight there is the satisfaction of getting something, realisation of some fulfilment. But there may be some desire or want also associated with the delight of beauty. Herbert read considers beauty as unity of formal relations among our sense perceptions. It is a very fluctuating phenomenon which finds diverse expression at different places and at different times. Its consciousness conveys rhythm unity and harmony. Man abhors chaos disorder and ugliness. In his heart burns a deathless desire for perfection. Thus beauty feeds the soul of man. It brings the soul in contact with a world of new dimensions a world of truth. To see things in their beauty is to see things in their truth . What the wise imaginations seize is beauty must be truth. It means beauty is truth carried at through intuitive perception and intellectualised imagination weighted with thought and judgements, the excellence of all art is its intensity capable of making all disagreeableness evaporate from their being in close relationship with beauty and truth. A Thing Of Beauty Is A Joy Forever *** " Mirror , mirror , on the wall Who ' s the fairest of all ? " , asked the queen , Answered mirror , " For all its worth , O my queen Your beauty is the fairest to be seen " . Every detail of structure has been produced for the good of its possessor . They believe that many structures have been created for the sake of beauty to delight man or the Creator , or for the sake of mere variety . Many structures are now of no direct use to their possessors , and may never have been of any use to their progenitors ; but this does not prove that they were formed solely for beauty or variety . With reference to the belief that organic beings have been created beautiful for the delight of man . ( It is felt ) the sense of beauty obviously depends

on the nature of the mind , irrespective of any real quality in the admired object ; and that the idea of what is beautiful , is not innate or unalterable . For instance , men of different races admire an entirely different standards of beauty in their women . If beautiful objects had been created solely for man ' s gratification , it ought to be shown that before man appeared there was less beauty on the face of the earth than since he came into the stage . Flower rank amongst the most beautiful production of nature , so that they may be easily observed by insects , thereby helping in pollination . Among animals , a great number of male animals , as all our most gorgeous birds , some fishes , reptiles and mammals , and a host of magnificently coloured butterflies have been rendered beautiful for beauty ' s sake ; but this has been effected through sexual selection - more beautiful males have been particularly preferred by the females , and not for the delight of man . So it is with the music of birds . We may infer from all this that nearly similar taste for beautiful colours and for musical sounds run through a long part of the animal kingdom . Nature gives to every season some beauties of its own . For example , the " fall colours " when the leaves turn from green to yellow to red before falling of before the start of winter season . Beauty can be found in the wrinkled face of an old woman or in the smile of the baby at the sight of its mother or in the giggle of young girls or in the tooth-less laughter of the old ; who has not enjoyed the beauty of cascading down of water from the top of a hill , the lashing of waves at the rocks at sea , the gurgling of water in the river flowing through a rocky terrain , the cool breeze wafting across the green fields , the vibrant colours at the time of the rising and setting sun , the twinkling of stars on a clear blue night sky , the smooth landing of a flock of birds in a meadow etc . , etc . Of course , as Keats says in Endymion " a thing of beauty is a joy for ever " . Some say " Beauty is skin deep " ; they look at the physical beauty of the human being . The husband stretches his own idea of beauty in his ugly wife and finds his wife very beautiful through passion . Shakespeare has rightly expressed this in his play " Midsummer Night ' s Dream " : " Cupid is painted blind . It finds Helen ' s beauty in the brow of Egypt " . In Margaret Wolfe Hungerford ' s Molly brown there is the line , " Beauty is in the eye of the beholder " . In a famous dialogue Socrates asks Cristobels , a pupil , to state what ' beauty ' was . To this Cristobels replied that it is anything that is internally or aesthetically pleasing . Socrates points out a waterfall in the city which he finds pleasing , yet Cristobels says that it is simply mediocre . Socrates , through roundabout logic finally comes to the famous conclusion that beauty is in the eye of the beholder . Shakespeare expressed the same sentiment in ' Love ' s Labours Lost ' thus : Good Lord Bayed , may beauty , though but mean , Needs not the painted flourish of your praise : Beauty is bought by judgement of the eye , Nor utter ' d by base sale of Chapman ' s tongues . But Benjamin Franklin , in ' Poor Richard ' s Almanac ' wrote : Beauty , like supreme dominion Is but supported by opinion . Beauty , according to Tagore , is the harmony realised in things which are bound by the law . However , David Hume ' s Essays ,Moral And Political include : Beauty in things exists merely in the mind which contemplates thereon . In India , beauty is well expressed in the paintings of Raja Ravi Varma and in Kalidasa ' s plays Thus , beauty can be defined as the quality that gives pleasure to the mind or senses and is associated with such properties as harmony of form or colour , excellence of artistry , truthfulness , and originality . Beauty is a characteristic of a person , place , object or idea that produces a perpetual experience of pleasure , meaning or satisfaction .

Beauty and ugliness , pleasure and pain are all false imaginations of the mind . Mind is a false illusory product . Conception of the mind also must , therefore , be false . They are all mriga-trishnika ( like a mirage in the desert ) . What is beautiful for you is ugly for another . Beauty and ugliness are relative terms. Beauty is only a mental concept ; a mental projection . It is only a civilized man that takes much of symmetry of form , good features , graceful gait , elegance of manners , graceful form etc. Pleasure and beauty reside in the mind and not in the objects . Sugar is not sweet ; the idea of sugar is sweet . . What matters is not physical beauty ; it is inner beauty . Inner beauty is a concept used to describe the positive aspect of something that is not physically observable -- qualities including kindness , sensitivity , tenderness or compassion , creativity and intelligence have been said to be desirable since antiquity . Keats in ' Ode on a Grecian Urn ' wrote , " Beauty is truth , truth beauty " . That ' s why Gandhi wrote ' when I admire the wonders of a sunset or the beauty of the moon , my soul expands in worship of the Creator ' A thing of beauty is a joy forever ....... joy indeed !!!!!!.
