ABSTRAK

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mencapai efisiensi dan efektifitas dalam mengelola jaringan komputer menggunakan Linux dengan program aplikasi Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP) dan Windows Server 2003 dengan memanfaatkan komputer yang tidak dilengkapi dengan harddisk. Jadi, pada sistem ini terdapat tiga komponen, yaitu jaringan komputer, server dengan dua sistem operasi dan komputer tanpa harddisk. Jaringan komputer merupakan sekumpulan komputer berjumlah banyak yang terpisah-pisah akan tetapi saling berhubungan dalam melakukan tugasnya. Sistem operasi yang digunakan dalam membangun jaringan ini, yaitu LTSP yang merupakan suatu aplikasi untuk membangun terminal server yang berjalan di atas Linux dan Windows Server 2003 yang digunakan untuk memberikan tampilan pada komputer client. Efisiensi yang ingin dicapai dengan menggunakan aplikasi LTSP pada sistem ini ditinjau dari segi ekonomis dan maintenance, kemudian efektifitas ditinjau dari segi performance dan security. Sistem ini disebut efisien karena memanfaatkan kembali komputer yang tidak dilengkapi dengan harddisk sebagai client, serta penggunaan Linux merupakan sistem operasi yang open source project. Keuntungan lain yang dapat dicapai dari segi efisiensi dengan menggunakan aplikasi LTSP pada sistem ini ialah easy to maintain, karena instalasi, perbaikan dan pengembangan sistem cukup dilakukan di komputer server. Efektifitas yang dicapai ialah dari segi performance karena mempunyai tampilan yang baik menggunakan Windows Server 2003, sehingga user lebih mudah dalam menjalankan aplikasi yang ada. Dari segi security lebih aman karena semua proses dilakukan pada server. Walaupun komputer yang digunakan tanpa harddisk, namun setiap client memiliki graphical user interface dan kecepatan proses yang sama dengan server.

THE DESIGN OF DISKLESS CLIENT SERVER BY USING LINUX AND WINDOWS SERVER 20003

ABSTRACT

The objective of research is to achieve the efficiency and effectiveness in managing the computer network by using Linux with application program of Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP) and Windows Server 2003 by using diskless computer. Thus, there are three components in this system: computer network, two operation system server and diskless computer. Computer network is a collection of multiple isolated computers but complementary in completing the task. The operation system used in building this network is LTSP as an application to build a server terminal running over Linux and Windows server 2003 used to give the display on client computers. The efficiency to be achieved by using the LTSP application in this system is accessed from economic and maintenance perspective, and then the effectiveness is reviewed from performance and security perspective. This system is called to be efficient because it reuses the diskless computer as client, and the application of Linux as open source project process. Another advantage in perspective of efficiency by using the LTSP application in this system is easy to maintain, because installation, servicing and development of system can be conducted in server computer. The effectiveness achieved is from the performance perspective because it has a good display by using Windows Server 2003, allowing the users to run the existing application much simpler. In perspective of security, it is more reliable, because all process is conducted in server. Despite of diskless computer, but each client has graphical user interface and the same speed of process as server.
