SUBLIMINAL METROPOLIS

Curated by Anne Maniglier JULIEN SEGARD PREKSHA TATER SHANTHAMANI MUDDAIAH

Subliminal Metropolis displays the works of three artists: Shanthamani M and Preksha Tater from India and Julien Segard from France. The exhibition explores different ways of representing architectural spaces whether urban, ancient, or psychological. The three bodies of work in the show play with a geometrical architecture and an organizing grid and deconstruct it to create an eternal play between the representation of a formalistic space and its collapse into what can be perceived as a mental landscape. In her work, Shanthamani Muddaiah addresses ancient Western antiquity and goes back to its iconic mythologies and images to examine and reform them with a particular and charged sculptural material charcoal. In her major piece in the show Black Mirror, she focuses on the architectural structure of the pillar. Six massive charcoal columns infiltrate the gallery space and alongside sculptures of urns create an imagined, disrupted archeological city site. Shanthamani's gaze towards the heritage of Western culture is ambivalent on the one hand it represents for her one of the origins of human knowledge and at the same time it is worn out by time and no longer holds an exclusive claim to the understanding of the world. The pillars signify both a pathos of human glory as well as its decay, collapsing under multiple narratives and inclusive forms of knowledge which gradually overshadow an ancient grandeur. Shanthamani's frozen, heavy sculptures of a deteriorating antiquity are juxtaposed in the gallery space with Julien Segard's dynamic drawings of deconstructed contemporary metropolises. Segard creates immense city-scape drawings made out from diverse recycled materials. The images originate from satellite views of different cities in France and India (Paris, Marseille) to which he has a biographical relation. The unity of the image is dismantled, detached from reality, abstracted and reconstructed anew. The distant bird's eye point of view is infused with the energetic proximity of his own personal-mental experiences and explorations in these urban spaces. This generates a vibrant perspective shuffling. Space in the works of Preksha Tater can also be grasped as processed formations of psychological relations. But differently from Segard's works they do not refer to specific locations in reality, rather, they map out the fragile architecture of the artist's inner world. Her minimalist paintings and installations are abstracted subliminal structures delicately reflecting her emotional and existential state of being.

Julien Segard
Born in Marseille, France, Julien Segard's art has been informed by his surroundings and people on the streets. Since the early 2000's, his work has revolved around the creation of conceptually based socio-economic objects and installations, for indoor and outdoor sites. He usually works on several bodies of work concurrently. The various bodies of works inform or cross communicate with each other. He doesn't believe in limiting his work to a particular size, frame, canvas or dimension, since he feels that restricts one's style expression. His works are more linked with mental maps than windows representations. Julien's work has been has been exhibited in France, Germany, Ghana, Mali, and New Delhi. His works have been shown in a group exhibition 'Subliminal Metropolis' at Latitude 28, New Delhi (2012). In 2012 he attended the Sandarbh Artist Residency in Partapur India. He also been recipient of other residencies including Cite Internationale des arts, Paris( 2010) andQuartiers d'Orange Residency, Mali (2009). Currently living and working in New Delhi, julien's work was exhibited at The rose Hotel , New Delhi in June 2012, followed by an Exhibition at Devi Art Foundation in collaboration with Asim Waqif, Ashhar Farooqui and Harry Samson, Gurgaon in August 2012.
