Background Bangladesh earns more from manpower export than garments. While garments manufacturers are widely appreciated for their performance, the remittance earners have limited public recognition except that once a year some remittance earners are given CIP status. The press reports that the Bangladeshi workers are extremely unhappy over their situation abroad and at home. The Minister of Manpower Export took note of the press report and has asked the Bureau of Manpower Exchange and Training (BMET) about possible reasons behind the dissatisfaction of BWA. BMET says that if BWA (Bangladeshi Workers Abroad) were given VIP reception, they will be happy. Being dissatisfied with the response from BMET the Minister assigned BBS to undertake a research on the reasons behind the unhappiness of the BWA and make recommendations. The research team of BBS undertook a literature survey and finds that many BWA face problems for not having machine-readable passport and the Embassy is paying no heed to that. Many people are in jail due to illegal work and the embassy is not giving any legal support. Many agencies deprived them of benefits but the embassies are not taking any action. When the BWA come to Dhaka, immigration officials misbehave with them due to not filling up the forms properly. Customs Officials check their baggage while others just have easy exit. Since the flights from the Far East and Middle East arrive early morning, the BWA face highjacking and extortion on the way home as they are basically forced to take rent-a car. They use to carry cash as they dont have credit card and earn income in cash. The team then conducted a survey. The questionnaire was designed based on their literature survey and informal interview with some migrant workers. The data file contains data collected from interviewing 200 migrant workers at Hazrat Shahjalal airport. QUESTIONS 1. Develop a cross tabulation using the variable gender and home district.
