The Mtis Nation of Ontario (MNO) Communications Branch seeks a strong team player committed to quality service to provide a range of services as the Communications Assistant to support and help facilitate effective and timely communications within the MNO and with the MNOs stakeholders, clients and vendors. This entry-level position will offer the opportunity for the Communications Assistant to work towards improving existing communications skills and to learn new communications skills and approaches as an effective member of the Communications Branch team. This is a permanent full-time position, dependent on funding, based at the MNO Head Office in Ottawa. Salary is dependent on education, experience and skill level. After successful completion of three months, there will be enrolment in the MNO group benefits and registered pension plan. Reporting to the Director of Communications the duties include, but are not limited to: integration of all aspects of MNO news services including but not limited to, print, electronic, web and social media develop and maintain contacts within MNO communities and branches in order to identify potential events and activities that should be highlighted by MNO news services monitor Google alerts, NationTalk and other news feeds as required and selecting stories for potential use by MNO News Services attend weekly Communications Liaison meetings and update the MNO website calendar carry out research and interviews necessary to write MNO press releases, e-stories, Voyageur newspaper stories, website stories, items for MNO reports, periodicals and other media as required take pictures related to news stories and other items written for MNO Communications vehicles proofread and correct materials written by other MNO staff coordinate the MNO website to insure maximum viewership possible, easy user navigation and timely updating maintain MNO website including MNO branch pages, updating information and adding new content keep abreast of the latest developments in internet, mobile and social media and making recommendations concerning the use of these technologies by the MNO post website and e-stories to Facebook or other social media as required coordinate advertising for Mtis Voyageur and MNO website including responding to inquiries, providing information to potential advertisers, liaising with the Finance Branch to insure proper invoicing, and with advertisers and with the Director of Communications to insure ads appear properly in the Voyaguer maintain Voyageur bulk and VIP mailing lists including updating and adding new entries maintain MNO distribution lists, including updating and adding new entries maintain Campaigner e-mail distribution lists preparation of purchase order requests and related tasks attendance and conduct at work according to the requirements of the MNO Policies and Procedures adherence to the requirements of the MNO Communications Policies and Procedures establish and maintain positive working relationship with all MNO employees, citizens and MNO stakeholders, clients and vendors maintain confidentiality guidelines as outlined in MNO policies, and legislated Privacy Acts Fulfil the duties of the Communications Coordinator (Design & Production) when this person is absent Minimum Qualifications: speak and write fluently in English Postsecondary education, particularly in the fields of communications, writing, journalism, marketing or public relations Demonstrably good writing skills Demonstrable aptitude towards communications work Demonstrable interest in improving communications skills and knowledge Knowledge of general office procedures and standard equipment Well-developed administrative and organizational skills Computer proficiency including knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, graphic software and databases Knowledge and proficiency in use of website Content Management Systems (CMS) Understands basic principles of website design Familiar with use of social media as marketing and communications tools Strong typing skills Capable of taking good news photos Demonstrable attention to detail and to documentation procedures Ability to work as part of a team and independently with minimal supervision Dependability, strong work ethic Willing to learn and ability to take direction in a hectic and unpredictable work environment Willing to travel occasionally, week days and/or weekends and to work occasionally after office hours Must hold a valid Ontario drivers license Knowledge and understanding of Mtis culture and history, and/or the ability to communicate in French would be considered an asset We thank all applicants for their interest, but advise that only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
