the ( NPSH) required at given flow and speed of rotation for a given pump; it is specified by the manufacturer. This is a function of pump design and varies from one design to anOlher. For a cavitation free performance of a pump, it is necessary that available NPSH be higher than the required NPSH. The availabk NPSH rep!esents the Jiffercnce between i the existing absolute ~nction head and the vapour pressure at the prevailing tempnalure. The required NPSH represents the minimum required margin between the suction head :1I1d tl~e vapour pressure at a given L1pacity. t11<"( NPSH ) available for the same Dow which is inferred from thc installation. For the, purp"'~e of this standard, an "error" is defined as a \';.due eCJual to twice the estimated standard deviation. It is assumed that there is a 9S~" probability that the estimated value of the true error will not exceed twic(~ the estimated standard deviation. 6.0 The following may be used. 6.1 Measurement methods, among others,.

of Flow Rate

For the purposes of' this standarcl the., smallest scale divisiori of any instrument used for observing head shall be not greater than that corresponding to 1'5% of the 110w.

6.1.2 Volumetri~ Tank Method This method, as in the case of thc weighing method, is only capable of m~asuring the mean value of the flow rate during the period concerned. In every case a leakage test of the tank shall be carried out and correction made for leakage if necessa'ry; where possible, 'initial calibration shall be carried out by weighing a liquid of known density into the measuring tank. Outdoor taks shall be adequately sheltered so that the level and the level-measuring devices are not disturbed by wind or rain. In the Case of big outdoor tanks the methcd is in general subject to errors in measurement of levels which are not stationary and which may be non-uniform. In such a case the levels shall be simultaneously measured within stilli:1g tubes, at not fewer than four widely separated positions within the tank. \V~lter levels may be measured with hook gauges, float gauges, piezometer or 'other instrumer'ltS capable of maintaining the r~quired accur;tcy. 6.1.3 Orifice Plates, Vallturi Tubes and No::..zles- , The measurement of 110\'/ rate may be carried , out using devic~s designed and installed in' accordance with IS:2952 (Pan I )-1964* for orifice plates and nozzles and IS: 4-477 ( Part 1)1967t for venturi tubes. :tvfininn::n straight lengths required upstream from the pres5ure difference device, especially, arc given in IS: 29.52 ( iJart I )-1%4* in the case of uriflc:c pIa tes and nozzles, and in IS: -14'i 7 ( Part I )1967t in the case of venturi tubes. For the purpose of this standard the pump wili be considered to cause a flow disturbance equivalent'to a single 900 bend lying in'the same plane as the pump volute or the last stage of a multistage pump or the outlet bend of the pump. The characteristics of these devices are calculated using above Indian Standards and the calibration is not l-equired. Care shall bc taken to ensure that neither cavitation nor air is present in the flow-measuring devices. Special care shall be taken to ensure that the indications of the device are not affected by air coming out of solution at the control valve. The presence of air can
