With 2012 having wrapped up just a
few short weeks ago, the Strathmore
and District Christmas Hamper Society
have been able to celebrate another
successful year.
Volunteers were kept busy in the
weeks leading up to Christmas, gath-
ering, sorting and then packing 200
hampers for families in need. Of the
200 hampers there were 279 children
who received a bag of age-appropriate
toys, or gift certifcates for the older
children.
Each hamper contained a turkey or
ham, all of the seasonal trimmings and
many of the basic staples every family
needs. The hamper is designed to assist
through the Christmas season and into
the New Year.
The number of hampers was a little
down from last year when the total was
225 hampers and perhaps thats a sign
that the local economy is improving,
said chairperson Dave Collins.
The campaign would not be the an-
nual success it is without the dedicated
support of the volunteers. The core
group consists of thirty to forty people
who deal with the sorting and pack-
ing. Then there are the hundreds of
volunteers from churches, schools, ser-
vice clubs, businesses, and sports clubs
who also collect food and toys.
On behalf of the hundreds of happy
families receiving their hampers, we
thank you for your generosity and sup-
port. Tax receipts will be issued in the
New Year to all those making cash do-
nations, said Collins.
Its sad that the public doesnt get to
see the tears of joy when parents collect
their bags of toys for the children but
weve seen it and can do no more than
pass on these emotional moments.
Sobeys also showed their support
once again by giving a discount on the
food purchases the society made, of
perishable food items or other products
that were needed to fll the hampers.
Another
successful
year comes
to an end

Did you check out
the bike show?
Its the time of year to be thinking
about what motorcycle you might
want to buy. Whether you buy new
or old, be aware of the top fve bike
brands stolen in 2011:
1) Honda
2) Yamaha
3) Suzuki
4) Kawasaki
5) Harley-Davidson
Studies have shown that most
bikes are stolen in the months of
July and August while February and
December came in at the lowest.
Makes sense as more bikes are on
the road during the warmer weather.
More bikes are stolen on a Monday
than any other day of the week with
Sunday being the day thieves appear
to rest. Having Specifed Perils or
Comprehensive coverage on your
bike will give you theft coverage.

of a consultant, they gathered input
from as many residents as possible.
They advertised the survey broadly, en-
gaging in discussions on social media,
and going wherever people gathered
-- parent-teacher association meetings,
seniors recreation activities, hockey
tournament, even door-to-door. They
encouraged people to complete the
online survey, and sometimes provided
technical support to complete it on-site.
On Nov. 29, they hosted a community
meeting, inviting residents to discuss
questions, concerns and solutions.
Walroth said she enjoyed meeting the
residents of Langdon, but her goal, and
the goal of council, was to hear from
residents whether or not they want
curbside recycling, and, if they do, what
kind of program theyd like.
The survey presented three main op-
tions. Option 1 was to continue with
recycling only at the current transfer
site. Option 2 was for residents to have
one recycling cart, and option 3 was to
add two recycling carts one for or-
ganic waste (ie. grass, leaves) and one
for general recycling. In every option,
the current transfer site would also re-
main open.
Residents most frequently voiced
concern was the cost of recycling carts.
Some people also wondered why, since
theyd pay for recycling, garbage costs
wouldnt decrease. Others wondered
about carts blowing away and what
Walroth called the ick factor smells
from organic waste.
However, in conversations with resi-
dents, Walroth found most Langdon
residents are on board with potential
curbside recycling, for the same rea-
sons council likes the idea.
It would be convenient for residents
to recycle more, thereby reducing the
garbage hauled to landflls and the
overall cost of hauling it. Walroth ex-
plained that the cost of transporting
garbage increases annually, but, by
reducing the garbage hauled, council
hopes to maintain residents garbage
fees rather than increasing them. She
emphasized that council doesnt make
money from recycling; they charge resi-
dents only what the program costs.
Walroth also pointed out that more
recycling and less garbage is a more
sustainable lifestyle, since creating new
landflls is no longer permitted in Al-
berta. But, she said, The real environ-
mental beneft comes from not doing
resource extraction. When materials
are recycled, fewer new materials need
to be created and mined, Walroth said,
and thats where huge emission re-
ductions come in. The more recycled
content you can use, (the less) youre
...having to dig for virgin materials.
Walroth and her team will receive the
survey results in January, and will pres-
ent the fndings to Rocky View Council
then publicly announce Councils deci-
sion. Any changes to the recycling pro-
gram would likely take effect in 2014.

The Strathmore Fire Department
(SFD) can add a new talent to the list
when it comes to search and recovery
cases. Java, a Dutch Shepherd and the
newest member of the department, is a
cadaver dog who specializes in water
searches.
This is a very special opportunity,
its very unique, and its a one of a
kind opportunity, said SFD Chief Muir
Furzer.
Watching him operate in water is
just phenomenal, how they can search
and recover.
Java completed his certifcation with
the North America Police Work Dog
Association in late 2012. He began his
training at three-months-old and is also
certifed through the Canadian Search
Dog Association.
With Java because he has very spe-
cial skills, and he is still a young pup
hes only 18 months, theres still going
to be some additional training down in
the States, said Furzer.
In order to have Java go for addition-
al training there is some concern about
funding.
I want the public to be aware that
yes we do have a search dog here but
this is a privately funded search dog,
not being funded by the taxpayers at
all. Our goal here is to seek corporate
funding, said Furzer.
The Calgary Fire Department has a
search dog whose training and equip-
ment are 100 per cent funded. The ul-
timate goal is for the SFD to fnd that
type of sponsorship with Java.
Other departments in the area dont
have a dog like him, but he will be able
to assist them. The chief will be meet-
ing with other chiefs in the area about
Java, outlining who he is and what
skills he has to offer when the call for
recovery comes in.
Its a good opportunity for him to
specialize in water searches and it
gives back to my own community, and
others as well. Its nice to be able to be
involved in your own town, said Mari-
jke Barnson, Javas owner and trainer.
Barnson is also one of the newest
members of the SFD. She will be train-
ing with the other members, learning
the basic skills.
I havent done a lot of frefghter
training but I am looking forward to
the challenges that would bring, said
Barnson.
On Jan. 10 Barnson and Java headed
to Fort Lauderdale to work with Greg
Strickland, a NAPWDA trainer. Anyone
who would be interested in helping
sponsor Java can contact Muir Furzer
at 403-934-3022.

SNOW CLEARING UPDATE
Citizens may notice some changes in how snow plowing/removal is completed
from previous years. As per Councils revised Winter Street Maintenance Policy
in 2011, snow plowing and then removal (as required) will be initiated in the fol-
lowing sequence:
1. Essential services access
2. Priority 1 routes arterial routes
3. Priority 2 routes collector routes
4. School zones
5. Areas where traffc fow is impeded
6. Town parking lots
Attention will be given to removal of snow from the central
business district roadways after priority roadways have been plowed. Wherever
possible, the Town will take reasonable steps to notify citizens of snow clearing
efforts, by placing signs when clearing/removal is to occur. Accumulated snow
in front of private driveways and entrances caused by Town plowing is the re-
sponsibility of the owner to remove and will only be removed by the Town when:
1. Natural fow of storm water is blocked
2. In the event that the road or boulevard exceeds snow storage capacity
For more information, please refer to the Winter Street Maintenance Policy on
the Towns website at Strathmore.ca under Bylaws.
We thank citizens for their patience and cooperation during winter operations.

On December 4, 2012, Strathmore Town Council and the WFCSS Board met to
discuss the Towns intent to utilize the Provincial FCSS Funding granted to the
Town of Strathmore for their own programming, and the resulting withdrawal of
these funds to WFCSS, as was noted in the formal notice to the WFCSS Board
and the Minister on July 26, 2012. Both Town Council and the WFCSS Board
agreed that it would be in the best interests of the community to ensure that
the WFCSS Board and Town Council continue to work towards the interests of
the community in the future. We look forward to a continued positive working
relationship in 2013 and in the years to come.

The frst column of the year traditionally con-
tains some information about healthy resolutions
to make. Rather than listing the common ones
(we all know what they are!) its good to remind
you to set realistic goals, not make too many
resolutions and set a deadline to achieve those
goals. Writing them down so you can see them
every day is another good idea. Good luck!
One other suggestion that helps us reach our
health goals is it have a friend to support you
in your resolve. Friends can be a great help in
maintaining your motivation.
If you are one of those people who always puts
off seeing your doctor for a check-up, do it now.
Its human nature to shrug off a little health
problem thinking it will go away soon and you
dont want to bother the doctor about every lit-
tle thing but it could be the start of a big thing.
Make that appointment soon.
Another idea that helps your doctor during
these check-ups is to be familiar with your
family history. Take time to look into what your
close relatives health was like and what they
may have died from. Some diseases are heredi-
tary and knowing your family health history will
help your doctor help you.
Pharmacists are a great resource you can use
on your path to good health. Wed be happy to
help you with your health goals. Have a happy
and healthy New Year!

In December 2012, the Energy and Resources Conservation
Board (ERCB) released a new framework discussion paper, as
to how they will deal with unconventional oil and gas devel-
opment.
Due to the increased exploration activity in Alberta, and
technological advancements that allow companies to drill ver-
tically, the Board developed the discussion paper, www.ercb.
ca, to get feedback on the suggest process.
Albertas regulatory framework needs to evolve to meet
new challenges, to provide all Albertans with assurances that
the system effectively manages the risks associated with oil
and gas development, to ensure effciency in the regulatory
system for industry and to deliver the policy outcomes estab-
lished by the Government of Alberta, said Darin Barter, ERCB
Communications spokesman.
Wells wont be approved on a well-to-well basis, but multi-
companies will combine forces to develop a resource devel-
opment plan (called a PLAY) over a geological and geographic
area, considering the properties of the resource and the tech-
nology required to develop that resource.
The levels of risk to public safety, the environment and the
resource itself would determine ERCB approval. Approval will
not hinge on operators defning how they will meet regula-
tions; they must only show achievement of play-specifc out-
comes. Guiding Principles for Hydraulic Fracturing by The
Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP), is a cited as an
example of industry recommended practises that would lead
to achievement of outcomes.
The outcome challenges must address:
Maintenance of the quality and sustainability of non-saline
surface and ground water
Conservation of resources, minimize waste, prevent pollu-
tion, protect the environment
No measurable adverse air quality affects to public or en-
vironment
Maximize economic recovery of reservoir fuids and conser-
vation of gas
Ensure all resource owners to have equal opportunities for
equitable production shares
Minimize regional issues and cumulative effects of oil and
gas development.
Ensure public safety.
Understand and disseminate information of the play regard-
ing resources, production capacity, reserves volumes, and oth-
er geological and reservoir characteristics.
Individual operators in the multi-company collaboration will
provide a project plan for their own leases. Both the Play plan
and Project plans must address water management, surface
infrastructure development, subsurface reservoir management,
stakeholder engagement and life-cycle wellbore integrity.
Since vertical drilling uses multi-well pads, the new pro-
cess will combine approval for drilling individual wells and
completing multiple wells with installing related production
equipment on a pad, into one approval. Pad approvals could
be used anywhere in the province.
Monitoring of performance and outcome achievements will
be made public, to ensure accountability. The Board could
supersede or modify existing regulations, to allow developers
to adapt to requirements of the play. The framework paper
suggests a regulatory response will be at a level proportional
to the severity of the risk.
Ultimately when the ERCB declares a Play, Wheatland
County residents could expect to be much more engaged in
the planning and consultation process as they will understand
the entire development and activity. This will address the
broader concerns Albertans have about air, water, land use
etc., said Barter. All companies who are a formal part of the
Play would be responsible to ensure that their specifc wells
are operated safely and any residual issues are addressed. On
a broader scale all companies would be responsible, under a
Board Order to address concerns or incidents, said Barter.
The ERCB sees company collaboration optimizing infra-
structure, exchanging information, and allowing a one-win-
dow approach for communication with stakeholders.
On fnalization of the new framework, two test trials of the
Play format will occur, and any modifcations to the frame-
work incorporated, prior implementation.
I respectfully submit that the Discussion Paper is highly
responsive to landowner concerns, historically and those that
have been expressed going forward. I encourage your read-
ers to read the Discussion Paper carefully and provide their
honest and full input and feedback. This is a unique opportu-
nity for all Albertans to help the ERCB shape regulation going
into the future, said Barter.
All Albertans have until March 31, 2012 to submit their
feedback regarding the new framework. Call toll free number

Kevin SorenSon, M.P., Crowfoot
Parliamentary Report
Happy New Year to everyone and may 2013 be
a prosperous one for you and your family. The
good news so far this year is that Canadas larg-
est trading partner, the United States, has avoid-
ed the so-called fscal-cliff of tax increases and
program spending cuts. This is an early hopeful
economic sign for all of us in 2013.
In our province and our Crowfoot riding, we
have strong and informed political views. Cana-
dians know of our political reputation and our
historically formidable policy positions. We tend
to be more fscally conservative we want to pay
as we go and avoid defcit fnancing when pos-
sible. We know what needs to be done and we
are always willing to do our share of the heavy
lifting. Recently, we are known for the wealth of
much needed energy resources in our oil-sands.
Years ago, Albertans shuddered to think of the
amount of hard work it would be if the world
ever came calling for these energy reserves.
The world is calling on us to sell them our
oil and natural gas. While we have traditionally
needed only one customer the United States,
today, the offers from other prospective cus-
tomers are very attractive. I will add that many
economists say that agriculture is and will in-
creasingly be the next great wealth generator for
jurisdictions that can serve this strong market. As
we know, agriculture is Albertas second stron-
gest industry!
This sketch of the kind of strong economic
leadership that our province is providing Canada
in our generation and for the foreseeable future,
is my lead-up to asking you to make your voices
heard in advance of the federal governments up-
coming budget. As your Member of Parliament,
I have always had the beneft of my constituents
sharing with me in generous and sometimes
certain terms what we want the Government of
Canada doing with our hard-earned tax dollars.
I am inviting all of my constituents to provide
our local input for the upcoming Federal Budget
in 2013 to the federal Finance Department web-
sites online pre-budget consultation at www.fn.
gc.ca.
Our Conservative government is focused on the
economy. Budget 2012 is helping to grow Can-
adas economy and create jobs. Nearly 900,000
net new jobs have been created in Canada since
July 2009 (90 per cent full-time and 75 per cent
private sector) and Canada has the best econom-
ic growth record among all G-7 countries. Ca-
nadians across the country are sending in their
views on the best ways to strengthen Canadas
economy with pro-growth ideas as part of the
next federal budget. In the Conservative National
Caucus in Ottawa, as your MP for Crowfoot, I
have been very outspoken calling for our return
to a balanced budget. I hope my constituents
back me up and participate in the pre-budget
consultation.
I invite you to provide your responses to the
following questions:
Are there measures we can take to strength-
en our economy in the face of global economic
threats?
Are there any cost-neutral or low-cost mea-
sures to further solidify our economic recovery
and position Canada to prosper over the long-
term?
In what areas should we look for more ef-
fcient and effective spending?
How can the Government further encour-
age private sector growth and leadership in the
economy?

ing this or previous columns you may write me

wheatland County food BanK
The food bank in Wheatland County is a chari-
table organization dedicated to helping people
during a crisis. The enthusiasm, commitment and
compassion of the staff and volunteers who work
to provide quality emergency food for those in
need is critical for the existence of the food bank.
Our Mission is the belief that all people should
be treated with dignity, understanding, respect
and without discrimination. We are people help-
ing people strengthen the social fber of our com-
munity.
In addition to weekly hampers for families in
need, the food bank supports local school pro-
grams for children without food and supplies food
for new mothers at risk.
We live in an extremely generous community
and the support we receive from both the county
residents and town food drives is wonderful. As
we continue to grow, that support is required now,
more than ever.
Administration is an integral part of any organi-
zation. For us that means everything from intake
of clients to government reporting, bookkeeping,
applying for government grants, etc. The neces-
sary and generous administrative support for this
program has been provided by Wheatland Family
and Community Social Services (WFCSS) for the
past 22 years. Without them we would not have
been able to operate the programs we have. In
January WFCSS will be relocating to the Wheat-
land County Administration building and may not
be able to provide the same level of support as in
the past.
The Wheatland County Food Bank is a sepa-
rate entity that will continue to provide services
to both the County and Town of Strathmore resi-
dents. To continue to provide our current level of
service and grow as the community grows, it has
become clear that we are now in need of perma-
nent part-time administration. We have researched
what provincial government grants are available
and believe that we will be able to fund this posi-
tion from those grants. This would allow our orga-
nization to remain independent and move forward
as needed.
Effective Jan. 15, clients requiring food may con-
tact the Wheatland County Food Bank at (403)
324-4335 from noon to 4 p.m., Monday through
Thursday. Application may also be made through
the website at www.wheatlandfoodbank.com.

Fule for Thought
So another Christmas has come and gone, and as
well, another New Years Eve. Im not a big fan of New
Years Eve to me its the ugly cousin of Christmas.
Oh, you know what I mean you may have to dance
with him/her, but its not always pleasant! This Christ-
mas, I got a technological gift from Deb and my son.
Its called the Nike Fuel Band, and Im hoping my
son didnt buy it because he cant spell well (get it,
Fuel Fule? LOL).
Its a band you wear and once its programmed, it
shows time, calories burned, steps taken, and energy
units of fuel used. I love the gift, but it did feel like
it had a double meaning. You know, Merry Christmas
Dad, youre too fat heres something to help ya
with that!
Its kind of like if youre pale, and somebody buys
you a tanning bed to fx that!
Oh well, its very cool, and it IS much needed, as I
have been a bit of a grazer all Christmas. I should
also appreciate it, because they do want me to get
healthier. If they remembered that Im worth more to
the family DEAD, they might not even have bought
this! I could have been given Bungee Lessons, a
white-water raft trip, or sky-diving gift certifcates!
They must care about me, I guess. Anyway, I wear the
band on my right wrist all day and I can go online to
track my progress. This is pretty easy right now, as
theres BEEN no progress. Its kind of embarrassing to
see how FEW calories Ive burned, or steps Ive taken!
The REAL problem is that a few days ago, Bren-
nen walked me through syncing my band with his
iPhone. When we were done, I asked why we did
this. To my shock, he replied, now I can see when-
ever you work out, or not I can track what youre
doing!
Track what Im doing whatre you, my WAR-
DEN?
Is this The Biggest Loser? I feel like Lindsay Lohan,
only she has an ankle band for monitoring! Brennen,
this is like house arrest, I dont want you to know
when Im slacking or not!
Too late, Dad you gotta answer to me now, its
time you got back in shape was his reply.
So now, I have an exercise band that sends informa-
tion to my son in Nova Scotia. From way out there, HE
can monitor me and know when Ive exercised or
not. This sucks, because there is no hiding from him.
I mean, whats next? How do I know Nike wont add
some tracking app so he can tell where I am!
Uh Dad, why are you at another pub? Why did you
stop at the A&W Wednesday after school?
This could be disastrous for me where are my
rights? How did a simple gift become this Big Broth-
er thing? Just my luck, Nike will fnd a way for that
kid of mine to send an electrical shock to the band
whenever I wimp out on a workout!! Im doomed, I
tell ya!
The proof of this came this past Saturday. We were
dining out with friends and I took off the band to
show it to my pal, Richard. Within less than a minute,
I got a text from Nova Scotia that read: you know, if
you take off the band, its cheating.
He could tell from across the country that it was off!
The stupid band had sold me out he got a notice
on his iPhone from my band! I really AM under House
Arrest!
Theres defnitely no hiding from my new trainer,
Ill just have to get serious about training.
Or will I? As of now he cant actually see me! So,
if I were to say, hire some kid with a paper route to
wear my band, Brennen would think Im walking all
over this town! I also have a lot of guys on the SHS
Basketball team who could wear it during practices!
Hed think Im really taking this ftness thing serious-
ly! That way, I could still go where I want, do what
I want, and hed be proud of my progress!! Hah, this
could actually work! I may have found a way to beat
the surveillance I wonder if this is what Lindsay
Lohan does, too?!
Footnote: While writing this column, I got a phone
call from Brennen, to tell me Id been pranked! At the
supper out, DEBBIE had texted him as soon as I took
off the band! So, I guess he really cant tell when I
take it off Im safe! He can still track my progress,
but I get to be free, after all! I have been stressing for
hours about him knowing when I remove the band! I
guess its an early April Fools prank!

Counsellors Corner
Youve seen them, either at home or in public.
You know, the kids who seem to lose it imme-
diately and can have a meltdown which can go
from 0 - 90 in only a few seconds! It may involve
screaming, failing on the foor, crying loudly, hit-
ting, kicking or other destructive behaviours. Its
terribly embarrassing for parents and shocking for
others to see.
Parents are often perplexed by these outbursts
of negative emotions and dont often understand
how to help children learn to deal effectively with
meltdowns and tantrums. Called emotional regu-
lation, teaching your child how to manage his/
her emotions is an important developmental step
and is similar to teaching toilet training or learn-
ing to share. Children dont come with the built-in
ability to know how to manage their emotional
responses. Research has shown that coaching your
child to manage emotions effectively is also linked
to increased school performance, more successful
social relationships, and improved self-confdence.
This often assists children in learning to deal with
their inner worlds and become better at problem
solving when they are experiencing emotional tur-
moil.
How does this happen? First of all, its important
that parents recognize that emotions are extremely
complex and children may not understand what
is happening to them. This is often the cause for
meltdowns or tantrums. As a parent, try to stay
calm, recognize that this behaviour is not deliber-
ately questioning your authority, accept the emo-
tion, validate the childs feelings and say some-
thing like, It must be frustrating when someone
takes your toy or that really made you angry.
Teach children to label the emotion and to use
words when talking about the emotion. For exam-
ple, a child may scream when frustrated but you
may say something like, you seem frustrated but I
cannot understand what you want unless you use
your words. Try again.
Preparing for an outburst can also be helpful.
Come up with a plan (with your child) for deal-
ing with challenging feelings. Emotions come in
waves and usually build, crash, and then subside.
During the building phase, pay attention to your
childs body signals. Children may tremble, turn
red in the face, clench their fsts, or grit their teeth.
You may want to say, I see that you are getting
angry. What can you do to calm down?
At this point, you may ask your child to have
a quiet time, do some deep breathing, or choose
something that will assist the child in develop-
ing some calming behaviours. Older children can
learn self talk which can include saying things
like, I can handle this because everyone makes
mistakes.
Remember to praise your child when he/she ex-
hibits efforts in regulating emotions.
Tantrums and meltdowns: helping your child to manage their emotions
And fnally, as a parent, model and talk about your own
strategies for staying calm. If you do get angry and fy off
the handle, repair the situation. Apologize and tell your child
that you make mistakes but you will try to be better about re-
maining calm. Talk about what you need to do to be more in
control. As diffcult as it is, its extremely important to model
good strategies for staying calm in diffcult situations. Talk
about your own emotions and use words to label what you
are feeling. Children who learn to use emotional language
often have more control over their own behaviour. Dealing
effectively with your own emotions teaches your child strate-
gies for successful emotional regulation.

vate practice in Strathmore. She has worked extensively with

Strathmore Destination Hearing co-owner Richard Zeeman has
been a part of helping children hear at the Lumina Hearing Center
in Bali, indonesia for over three years. Old, discarded hearing aids
are collected and repaired or used for parts to create functioning
hearing aids for children in need of them.

A new hearing centre in
Strathmore is looking to col-
lect your old, broken, seemingly
useless hearing aids from you.
Richard Zeeman co-owns Des-
tination Hearing Clinic, located
in the Valley Medical Centre. He
and his company are collecting
the hearing aids to donate to CV
Lumina in Bali.
We got involved with a little
school in Bali Indonesia and the
school has mostly hearing im-
paired children, said Zeeman.
The problem was that there
are no social programs there
to cover for the hearing ids for
these children so a lot of them
have to learn sign language.
The problem too is if they cant
hear enough before they turn
roughly around 10-years-old
they wont be able to develop
speech either.
H.L. Nick Liem was born in
Indonesia and had worked with
Rotary International Projects in
Africa to assist hearing-impaired
children. Upon retiring he re-
turned to his home country and
realized the children of Bali
were also in need of the same
support. He recruited fellow Ro-
tarians, who were also involved
in the African Projects. Vikki
MacKay, a Registered Hearing
Instrument Practitioner in B.C.,
and Jim Renshaw, an Electron-
ics Technician specializing in
Audiometric Equipment assisted
in starting a project at Lumina
in Bali. The three of them to-
gether constructed, equipped,
and funded the Lumina Hear-
ing Center. Staff was recruited
and trained, and the concept
was introduced through the lo-
cal Rotary Clubs to the commu-
nity. Zeeman was approached
about three years ago to see if
he could help.
Zeeman said hearing aids
are collected here and then
brought to Bali where they can
be repaired. If a hearing aid is
dead, the speaker or the micro-
phone, any usable parts, are
taken out and replace parts out
of another one to make a work-
ing hearing aid. He personally
joined the others in Bali to set
up the repair lab, and started
teaching repairs two years ago.
He has since gone back and ex-
panded on what they could do
for repairs.
Its just that simple really.
Nobody makes any money off
this, basically its all done at the
school and basically a hearing
aid thats donated if its broken
will help the child hear better
period, said Zeeman.
Even if theyre broken theyre
valuable. We can take a part out
like a speaker or a microphone
or even some wires, even the
wiring helps. Its amazing how
many people you can help with
something thats (just sitting
there.) Its amazing how you
can help people with some-
thing thats of no value to one
person is very important to an-
other, its kind of neat that way.

My New Years Resolution
this year is to get rich,

It aint gonna happen!
Early in January, I stopped in at the Tim Hortons at 800 Pine Road, on the south side of Highway #1. The restaurant
manager gave me kind permission to ask his customers and a staff member about their New Years resolutions.

Winter Carnivle at Strathmore High
Shannon LeCLair
Times Reporter
Seeing bright, sparkling, swirl-
ing colours can be a great way to
rid yourself of the winter blues. For
those who cant afford a vacation you
can get the same excitement here at
home with Winter Carnivle, an eve-
ning of colour being put on by Strath-
more High School (SHS) dance stu-
dents.
I tried to fnd a theme or some-
thing to base the show on that could
encompass 30 dancers plus and we
toyed with the idea of Mardi Gras,
said dance and drama teacher Paula
Richardson.
She looked at different carnivals,
circuses and winter festivals for inspi-
ration before coming up with the cur-
rent adaptation.
What we really tried to capture
from those different ideas was just
the colour, the festivity and excite-
ment and sparkle is what we tried to
capture. Its a show designed to cre-
ate some heat in a cold winter night,
said Richardson.
We have lots of glitter and sparkle
in the costumes. The music itself cant
be defned as one genre. The music is
a little bit of all those elements that
we pulled from, it is a mixed bag.

Planning for the New Year
aLeri SwaLweLL
Wheatland District 4-H
On Dec. 12, at the Wheatland District 4H Meeting, I was
assigned the chance to be the reporter for this current year.
My name is Aleri Swalwell and I have been a member of
the Strathmore 4H Multi Club for two years. The Wheatland
4-H Council Members are; President Wendy Kaisser (Hus-
sar 4-H Multi), Vice President Vacant, Secretary Margo
Comstock (Crowfoot Multi), Treasurer Sherry Malberg
(Arrowwood River Wranglers) and Key Leader Michelle
Lalande.
The Junior Council consists of; President Sydney Ber-
reth (Crowfoot 4-H Multi), Vice President Billi Comstock
(Crowfoot 4-H Multi), Secretary Jourdyn Sammons (Crow-
foot 4-H Multi & Hussar 4-H Multi) and Reporter Aleri
Swalwell ( Strathmore 4-H Multi).
The most exciting part of the meeting was the planning
for the next District Fun Day. The welcome back movie,
pizza and popcorn Fun Day will be Saturday, Jan. 19, from
5 p.m. to 11 p.m.
It will be at the Strathmore Youth Centre. We are hoping
lots of 4-H members will be there for this great time. Keep
watching the Strathmore Times for more information and
reminders to attend! The next District meeting will be Feb.
13, at 7:30 p.m. in the Chuck Mercer Room.
On behalf of the Wheatland District Council, we wish you
all a Happy New Year!
As always some of the
students have had a great
deal of fun with rehears-
als, said Richardson. Some
of them may want to be
on stage in their heart, but
may have a hard time com-
ing out of their comfort
zones and putting it all out
there for the audience.
The students have a nice
mix of experience with
dance. Some have been
dancing for years, and oth-
ers may have just started
with Dance 15 last school
year which is quarter class
lasting only 10 weeks.
Some of these students
I have had for three years.
So I have really seen some
of them grow, their conf-
dence grows on stage, their
confdence grows as danc-
ers, said Richardson.
Thats always reward-
ing for a teacher to see that
growth. Some of them its
my frst time with them. So
its always exciting for me
to work with new students
as well to see what they
can bring to the table.
The dances cant be la-
beled as one particular
style since the inspiration
for them comes from such
a diversifed group of cho-
reographers.
There will be approxi-
mately 20 performances,
each of which Richardson
thinks will last for just un-
der two hours.
Rehearsals began in Sep-
tember and Brett Kozak,
one of the dancers in the
show, designed the post-
ers that are up around the
school and created the art
painted on the stage foor.
I had students willing to
come in over their Christ-
mas holidays to paint, to
clean, to do tech work, to
do lights. I had a good al-
most dozen kids come in
over the Christmas break,
said Richardson.
You always get that
group that is so willing
to give back, so willing
to help. I think thats sig-
nifcant for kids willing to
come in, that says some-
thing about their dedica-
tion, that says something
about their work ethic.
Tickets can be purchased
in advance by calling the
school at 403-934-3135 or
can be purchased at the
door for $10 each. The
show runs nightly begin-
ning this Sunday, Jan. 13
until Jan. 15 at 7 p.m.

John Godsman
Times Contributor
John was born in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1936, and Anne was
born in Edinburgh in 1939. John is the eldest of two brothers,
and his younger brother lives in Arkansas. Anne is the eldest of
four girls, with the next eldest living in Ontario, while the other
two still live in Scotland. Both John and Anne left school at age
15, to join the work force. John became an apprentice aircraft
engineer, while Anne joined the Bank of Scotland.
In 1954, John joined the Royal Air Force as an Air Traffc
Controller, and spent the next 12 years serving at different air-
felds in the U.K., Germany and Gibraltar. He and Anne met at
a dance in Edinburgh, while he was
stationed at Edinburgh/Turnhouse,
and they were married in 1959. This
marriage has produced one son,
Iain, born in Gibraltar. They now
have a daughter-in-law Joanne, and
two grandchildren Arizona (21) who
lives and works in Burnaby, and
Hunter who is in Grade 12 at Forest
Lawn High School, in Calgary.
John, Anne and Iain immigrated to
Vancouver, B.C. in 1967, then moved
to Calgary in 1972. After 3.5 years
working for CP Air in Vancouver,
John joined the Life Insurance in-
dustry in 1970 where he spent the
next 33.5 years, before retiring in
2002.
Anne continued her banking career, working for Scotiabank
in Vancouver and Calgary, before joining The Royal Bank of
Canada Payroll Dept., which she retired from in 1999 after 26
years. During their working life, they served in various execu-
tive positions in community associations, and took up both
curling and league darts.
They started square dancing in 1986, and participated in The
Opening Ceremonies for The 1988 Winter Olympic Games in
Calgary. There were 960 dancers on the feld at McMahon Sta-
dium, ranging in age from eight to 92. They also danced at the
opening ceremonies for the Rotary International Convention,
and the World Police & Fire Games, both held in Calgary. They
have square danced across Canada, in the U.S., and in Scotland.
They became campers, starting with a tent, then moving to a
truck/camper, and fnally a ffth wheel.
In 1998, they volunteered as campground hosts with Parks
Canada, serving in Banff, Kootenay and Waterton National
Parks through 2004, then continued hosting with the United
States Forest Service in Montana through 2006.
After retiring to Strathmore in May 2000, they immediately
became part of the community, in the fall became members
of The Wheatland Whirlers Square Dance Club, and are past
executive members of The Calgary & District Square & Round
Dancers Association. Anne instructs
at her own Strathmore Stompers
Clogging club, which meets weekly
at Strathmore Library. They are both
active members of Strathmore Unit-
ed Church, where Anne enjoys quilt-
ing, serves on Pastoral Care, and is
a member of the Agape Group. She
has served on the Community Cri-
sis Centre board. Is a member of
the Crown Jewels, and also enjoys
gardening. John plays golf in the
summer, hopes to fnd time to go
curling, works two days a week with
Enterprise Car Rentals, and is really
enjoying writing the seniors articles
entitled Remembering Our Roots
which he started in May 2010. They
both enjoy travelling with their ffth
wheel, and have been to every province in Canada and 20 25
states in the northern U.S.
When they moved here in 2000 the population was 6,990,
and now its over 13,000. The biggest changes theyve seen
include all the new stores along the highway and the increase
in population. What was once farmland is now residential sub-
divisions. The small town they moved to is now growing in
leaps and bounds. Its getting too big, but its far better than
living in Calgary!

People often head to Rosebud
to take in one, or all, of the per-
formances on the main stage. The
community gives the feeling of
coming home, of joining old friends
for a new adventure. So in light of
this, the community is hoping to of-
fer more reasons to join them this
year.
The idea behind all of it is were
just giving people another reason
to come to Rosebud. Its a different
reason, people come for plays and
of course some of these are plays,
said Artistic Director for Rosebud
Theatre Morris Ertman.
Were just offering more of the
kinds of stories and music and
things that we think really reso-
nate with our audience and we as
a company of artists in Rosebud.
Throughout the year there will
be different performances offered
on the Opera House stage. Valdy,
Gary Fjellgaard and friends will be
kicking off their latest tour with a
performance in Rosebud on April 9
at 7:30 p.m. Saskia and Darrel will
join them for an evening of folk
and country music.
Juno award winner Brian Doerk-
son will be on stage May 15 and 16
at 8 p.m. C.S. Lewis on Stage will
be on May 17 also at 8 p.m. Tom
Key who wrote Cotton Patch Gos-
pel will be on stage to share and
portray the life of Lewis who is best
known for his work The Chronicles
of Narnia.
Comedic relief will follow on May
18 when Panic Squad hits the stage
with the sole mission of making
people laugh, hard. Last up is Let-
ter from Wingfeld Farm August 28
to 31. Ertman said it is the quirky
story about a guy from the city who
moves into a farming community. Of
course he doesnt ft and its kind of
a crazy new adventure almost daily.
He spins these stories about rural
living, which end up being printed
in newspapers across Canada to the
delight of the readers.
Make sure to mark your calen-
dar for the upcoming events so you
dont miss out on everything Rose-
bud has to offer.

Prior to losing their sec-

the Wheatland Braves
and the Okotoks Oilers
battled to a 2-2 draw on
Jan. 4 at the Strathmore
Family Centre.

Braves a work in progress

Despite battling the Okotoks Oil-
ers for the top spot in the league, the
Wheatland Braves have a ways to go
to be classifed the best team in the
SCAHL.
That was the message from Braves
head coach Keith Klemmensen after
his team earned one out of a pos-
sible four points this past weekend.
In a battle of the heavyweights on
Jan. 4 at the Strathmore Family Cen-
tre, the local double-A peewee team
allowed a goal late in the game,
earning a 2-2 draw versus the Oil-
ers, before losing 5-4 to the Foothill
Bisons the following day in Hussar.
At the end of the day we got beat
by a couple of teams and we didnt
play as well as we could have for the
duration of both games, so I think
that means those teams were sure
better than us this weekend, thats
for sure, said Klemmensen. Right
now both of those teams are hungri-
er for the puck were not bearing
down and getting to loose pucks in
front of the net. Were just not work-
ing hard enough in general. Were
probably spoiled a little by our own
success this is a wake up call for
the all of us.
The Braves opened the weekend
by taking on the Oilers, who entered
the game with one loss on the sea-
son. Wheatland took a 1-0 and even-
tually a 2-1 lead before allowing the
tying goal with 40 second left in the
game.
I dont think we earned a bet-
ter fate, said Klemmensen after the
game. We had too many guys that
started to slack off end of the frst
period. We had four or fve guys that
were not fully invested (in the game)
quite frankly were probably fortu-
nate to get that tie. I know we wee
ahead, but we were fortunate.
It looked like we lost confdence
in ourselves as the game when on
that other team sensed that and they
bounced on it.
The Braves were looking to get
back on track the following day
against the Foothills Bisons. Despite
taking a 3-1 lead, the Braves fell 5-4
to suffer their second loss of the sea-
son.
Its hard (to give up the lead),
but its doable, said the coach. We
werent going to the net hard, we
were cutting through the middle.
Too much gliding, not enough
striding too many circles, not
enough stops and starts. Theyre all
clichs but theyre true.
The Braves will look to get back
to their winning ways on Jan. 11 (6
p.m.) when they host Taber in Hus-
sar, before going on the road to face
Airdrie the following day.
Chiefs win
The Wheatland Chiefs improved
to 12-10-1 on the season after a 2-0
road victory over the Sylvan Lake
Lakers on Jan. 5.
Brooker Pretty Young Man and
Dakota Herman each scored for the
Chiefs, who extended their winning
streak to four games.
The local double- A midget team
will play a pair of home games at
the Strathmore Family Centre this
coming weekend when they host the
Red Deer Pro Stitch (Jan. 12, 5 p.m.)
and the Foothills Bisons (Jan. 13, 7
p.m.).
warriors split
After falling 5-3 to the Bow Valley
Timberwolves on the road in Co-
chrane Jan 5, the Wheatland Warriors
laid a beating on the Innisfail Flyers
the following day at the Strathmore
Family Centre.
The local double-A bantam team
improved to 14-6-4 on the season
with an 8-4 win over the Flyers.
The Warriors will now hit the road
to face the Foothills Bisons on Jan.
12 (5 p.m.), before returning home
to face Airdrie the following week-
end in Hussar (Jan. 18, 7:30 p.m.).
Mario Prusina

Ten minutes of solid, exciting hock-
ey enabled the Wheatland Kings a split
in a pair of home games at the Strath-
more Family Centre this past weekend.
After losing 8-5 to Coaldale on Jan.
5 and trailing 4-2 to the Banff Bears
in the third period the following day,
the Kings fought back with three un-
answered goals to earn a 5-4 win.
According to Kings assistant coach
Derek Schlamp, despite not playing
to their potential over the weekend,
theyll take the two points and move
on.
Other than the last 10 minutes,
we didnt play much of a game, said
Schlamp. Any game from here on out
until playoff time is a big two points.
We have to be playing playoff hockey
(the rest of the season). Any two points
against a division rival is a big two
points.
The Bears kept the game close and
even took the lead before the Kings
buckled down and earned the win. De-
spite some inconsistent refereeing, the
Kings were not using it as an excuse.
We cant get too caught up in what
the refs are doing, said Schlamp. They
ref the game and we cant exactly do
anything about what theyre doing out
there. We have to keep focused and
play our game.
The Kings began the weekend with a
battle against the second-seeded Coal-
dale Copperheads. Despite having 2-1
and 4-3 leads going into each intermis-
sion, the Kings were outscored 5-1 in
the third period en route to the loss.
We werent ready to play there
were some issues with a couple of
players and we just didnt bring it,
said Schlamp. We didnt deserve to win
and therefore we lost.
It was just one of those games
where it was the most important game
of the year and we didnt come
through.
The Kings will look to get back to
their winning ways this weekend
when they host the top team in the
league, the Okotoks Bisons on Jan. 12
(8 p.m.).
According to Schlamp, the Kings
need to be at their best against the
team that only has two regular season
losses (27-2-1).
We are playing the best team in
the league, by far, said the assistant
bench boss. That is going to be a big
test, well know where were at (going
into) the playoffs. We always play good
against Okotoks, but we got to bring
the best that we have in order to beat
them.
Kings scramble for split
Despite not playing to their full potential, the Wheatland Kings earned a 5-4 victory over the Banff
Bears on Jan. 6 at the Strathmore Family Centre.

Bisons ready for the New Year
Mario Prusina
Times Editor
Despite a 2-5-2 record in league play
during the month of December and an
0-2-2 mark during the recent Macs Midg-
et Hockey Tournament, the UFA Bisons
are optimistic heading into January.
After a grueling month of hockey with
a lot of games being played, the local
triple-A midget team has only eight con-
tests remaining in their Alberta Midget
Hockey League schedule.
With so much hockey played, Bisons
coach Jeremy Friesen was thrilled that
the team could fnally have a break and
take time away from the rink.
We (didnt) come back until Jan. 7, so
well basically start from scratch there,
Volunteers for Hockey Day in GA began set-
ting up the two outdoor rinks for their annual
pond hockey event on Jan. 5. This years event
will be taking place Feb. 9 and possibly 10 de-
pending on the registration numbers.

Students at Sacred Heart Academy are involved in a program called Rocks and Rings, which they
start when they are in Kindergarten. The program brings in instructors every year to teach the
students rules and proper techniques for the game of curling. it is a unique program and the stu-
dents really enjoy it. Once the students reach grade six they participate in a small feld trip to the
Strathmore Curling Rink, where they get to try out the skills they have learned over the last six years.

Hard at work
said Friesen. Well go right back to ba-
sics and (essentially) run a mini training
camp.
We then head out on the road, which
is perfect, do some team building up in
Edmonton, make a weekend out of it and
just enjoy it.
Weve been at the rink so often (last
month) and there have been so many
things happen, its going to be good
to step back and say okay, weve been
there, weve done that.
According to Friesen, the strength of
his team is depth. There is not one su-
perstar doing all the scoring. He believes
that will help the team in the long run.
There are other teams having success
at (the Macs) and our league, playing
primarily with two lines. Whats going
to happen when you get into a playoffs
series when that line (or two) gets shut
down? question Friesen. Who is going
to be able to step up and elevate? Thats
why we focus on our entire group, our
entire 20 (players). On any given night,
someone had the ability to step up and
make a difference.
Thats what it takes to be successful
come playoff time.
The Bisons will get back to league ac-
tion this weekend when they head on
the road to face Lloydminster and the
SSAC Athletics Jan. 12-13.
The Herd will return home Jan. 19
(5:15 p.m.) when they host Lethbridge
and Jan. 20 (2 p.m.) against the Calgary
Flames.

UFA Bison vs Leth-
Bridge Pronghorns
dec. 29
@ MAx BeLL centre
Instead of focusing on
their own game, the UFA
Bisons were dragged into
a penalty-flled game ver-
sus the Lethbridge Prong-
horns.
Turns out that type
of game cost them two
points and a playoff
berth in the playoffs at
the Macs Midget Hockey
Tournament.
We talked a lot about
the way that they play
and how they are and we
fell victim to it, said Bi-
sons head coach Jeremy
Friesen. I didnt think
the offcials helped us out
much in the third period
there anytime we got
(some) momentum or
zone time, we seemed to
be going to the box.
Despite outshooting
Bisons fall in round robin
UFA Bisons vs okAnAgAn
rockets dec. 30
@ FAther dAvid BAUer
During the frst two games of the
Macs Midget Hockey Tournament, the
UFA Bisons had great third period per-
formances.
Unfortunately, they couldnt continue
the trend in the remaining round robin
games of the tournament.
After a back and forth battle with the
Rockets, tied at three going into the third
period, the Bisons allowed two power
play goals against en route to a 5-3 loss.
I thought we responded well after
yesterday, (but) we got into some pen-
alty trouble in the third period, said Fri-
esen. The frst and second period (the
ref) let us play and all sudden in the
third period it was penalty after penalty
the guys cant fnd that line either to
what is okay and what isnt okay.
Kurt Fraser tied the game at one in
the frst period when he converted a
feed from Mark McLeod and Brayden
Biccum. After falling 2-1, the Bisons
responded when Brady Reagan took a
pass from Connor Tudor.
Markson Bechtold then scored with
no time left in the clock, after fring
home a shot milli-seconds before the
horn sounded to end the second period
tied at three.
We took some bad penalties and
those are things that have been ad-
dressed, said the coach. Maybe they
need to be addressed more signifcantly
here (in the New Year).
Mario Prusina Photos
the Pronghorns, the Bi-
sons allowed a power
play goal in the frst and
second periods en route
to a 2-0 loss.
We didnt play the
way we need to get re-
warded, said Friesen.
The fact we had to leave
it to the third period to
chance poor offciating
isnt acceptable either.
We didnt dictate
any part of that hockey
game, whether it be on
the power play or not.
We just played the way
they wanted us to. Thats
the frustrating part.
I dont know if we
can play any worse than
that and I honestly dont
think they can play any
better than that. Its a
2-0 hockey game on two
bounces. If we play any-
thing any thing like the
third period of our frst
two games against those
guys, its probably seven
or eight nothing. Thats
the frustrating part too
because we know we are
a much better hockey
team than them.

Working on his dreams
Mario Prusina
Times Editor
Since he was 13, Justin Geeraert has
been working way up the offciating lad-
der.
The Rockyford native, who has been
plying his trade in various levels of mi-
nor hockey, took part in the prestigious
Macs Midget Hockey Tournament for the
third time in his career Dec. 26-Jan. 1 as
a linesman.
Its a good experience and I really
enjoy coming out, said Geeraert. It is
a lot more intense (than regular season
games), especially when the teams have
something to play for. Its quick hockey.
Despite the speed of the game, Geer-
aert proved he could keep up, as the
23-year-old was even selected as a lines-
man for the playoff portion of the tourna-
ment, something that he achieved for the
frst time.
Another frst for him was being able to
offciate an Alberta Junior Hockey League
game earlier in December.
Id like to be in the Western Hock-
ey League in a couple of years and see
where it goes from there, said Geeraert
of his future goals. Its pretty hard to get
into the show (NHL) - it would be cool
- but defnitely the Western League is my
goal.
According to Geeraert, he frst started
refereeing in Rockyford for three years
before being recruited to Strathmore
to offciate in the South Central Albert
Hockey League (double-A progam).
From there he was seen and noticed and
things took off from there.
Now Geeraert is a regular in the Alber-
ta Midget Hockey League (triple-A) and is
working his way up. He is very grateful
for the people who helped pave the way
for his success.
Ive had a lot of people help me
John Culshaw and Dave Dutka in Strath-
more, he said. Then this past year, Clay-
ton Hall has helped me out a bit and stuff
like that. A local guy Clayton got to the
Western League, so he knows what it
takes to get there. It helps out a lot.
Rockyfords own
Justin Geeraert was
a linesman at the
35th Annual macs
midget Hockey
Tournament Dec. 26-
Jan.1 in Calgary.
