1. Design Problem
I. Examination of Cost

About the cost of Table Lamp, we have gotten a result from the market in Phnom Penh (Cambodia) as follow: For low class : From 5$ to 10$ For medium class : From 20$ to 34$ For high class : Over than 50$ The different cost in each class relates to the beauty of shape, shapes color, light color and type of light bulb.

II.

Method of illumination

The Table Lamp can illuminate on area which is approximate 0.7m2 on desk. The light bulb can be moved vertically and horizontally and rotated freely.

III.

Bulb support and base

The base must keep the Table Lamp in stable position despite, we move the shade of the light bulb to somewhere. The support and the neck can move the light bulb to any point (vertical and horizontal).

IV.

Electrical fittings

The light bulbs geometry is rectangular and it is hung under a shade. Electric wires are put in the hole of support and go out through the hole behind and on the button of the base. So the electric wire isnt seen from the light bulb till that hole.

V.

Shade

The light bulbs geometry is rectangular, so the shades geometry is also rectangular on the light bulb.

VI.

Color

To compete in market, we make the Table Lamps color as follow: Available Pink Color: The shade, the base and the support is Pink. Available Blue Color: The shade, the base and the support is Blue. Available Claire Green Color: The shade, the base and the support is Green.

The color of illumination of light bulb is red.

VII. Assembly
The table lamp has many parts such as: - Base - Support - Neck - Connector - Shade - Light bulb - Interrupter - Electric wire. They are fixed by screw.

2. Design specification Performance

The Table Lamp can be operated every time and long hours lighting with free from worry.

Environment

The Table Lamp is put in the room with normal temperature. So we dont study much about choosing material.

Operating requirements
Auto-voltage : 100V-220V Frequency : 50Hz Power : Max 18 w Eye Protect For domestic use

Life and Service

We design the Table Lamp being a permanent life, except the light bulb.

When the light bulb is dead, we can change it without remix the shade, the base and the support. We just pull it out from the shade and replace a new one.
Page | 2

We choose the light bulb whose life is about 50 000 hours.

Maintenance
The durability of Table Lamp is permanent, so we dont need to maintain. When the light bulb is dead, we just change it.

Cost
In this project, we decide to design the Table Lamp for medium class. Its cost must be about 30$ comparing the normally marketing cost

Packaging and Shipping

The elements of the Table Lamp such as: the shade, the support, the base, the neck, the connecter, the electric wire, the interrupter, and the light bulb could be put in a box with the dimension: o Length 320mm o Width 100mm o Height 200mm.

Manufacturing facility
We use : o Catia Program o Injection Machine o Polishing machine : Design the shape : Molding each element of the table lamp : To make the surface smooth

Materials

Type of material for making each element, we use plastic except the neck of table lamp. The metal is used for making the neck which can be move vertically and horizontally. It is covered by the plastic.
For making the base, support, connecter and shade, we choose a type of plastic. It is Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS).

ABS Chemical Bounding Advantage - Good rigidity - Dimensional stability - Hard and glossy finish - Improved impact and scratch resistance - Fairly good thermal, moisture and fat resistance - Easy to mold and form - Easy to print, to metalize under vacuum, to electroplate

ABS Grain Limitations - Opacity - Electrostatic - Poor chemical resistance - Poor weather resistance

Safety

To protect eye: We use the light bulb which illuminates the red color. The red illuminations color is safer than the white illuminations color. The shade can keep the illumination from reflecting directly to the eye.

3. Presentation of alternative solutions

Concept 1 Advantage: To keep in the stable position Attractive appearance It can be moved vertically and horizontally Eye protection To be easy to replace the light bulb The interrupter can be seen clearly The shade can be rotated.

Disadvantage To be difficult to design in connecting the electric wire and the light bulb at the rotating point Concept 2

Disadvantage When the interrupter is pushed, the table lamp could fall down. To be difficult to design in connecting the electric wire and the light bulb at the rotating point.

5. Method of Manufacture and Assembly Methodology

Start

Design the shape of Table Lamp

Molding each element element Connecting electric wire and assembly

Commissioning

End
For molding each element, we dont need to operate it, because we must spend much money on injection machine. So we command and buy each element of molding from the company of plastic injection.

8. Summary
In design this table lamp, we choose plastic ABS (Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) for making each elements. This plastic is ejected for making form following the shape we have designed. We choose and buy the light bulb, electric wire, and the connecter from the market. Then, we assemble them to make the finished product. In the end, we test it to know if it works following our definition.

9. Conclusion and Recommendation

The table lamps shape is designed following the recently popular appearance. We take 3 different shapes to compare, then, we choose the best one among them. In design this project, we define accurately each elements dimension. The total expenditure of this product is lower than the normal markets price of the table lamp (Medium Class). So, we can produce this product to compete in market. Despite this projects design is studied, it is still lack some point that we didnt thoroughly study because of our knowledge limitation or misunderstanding. However, it could be the better guide for design the table lamp for the next upgrading.
