Coastal Development China

Balance of water supply and water demand

More than 400 cities of 600 cities are short of water, and more than 100 cities are severely short of water. The owned water source by a person is 2200m3, that is a quarter of the world average level.

Water is the guiding principle for Coastal Urban Development

Coastal Urban Development requires balancing between value creation and cost-effectiveness

Value Creation

Water Challenges for Caofeidian Eco-City

Severe shortage of fresh water resources (limited rainfall, high evaporation, and polluted rivers) Brackish soil and groundwater

Pollution of fresh water resources Over-extraction of the groundwater

Groundwater level subsidence Severe intrusion of salt water

Fragile ecological environment

Focus on campus area as leading example

Sustainable water management for Caofeidian Eco-City

Optimalization and combination of 3 disciplines leads to a set of design principles
Water system Land scaping

Ground water management

Minimize the use of drinking water Storage of available rain and river water in short wet season Rainwater will be used for landscape irrigation Separate greywater and blackwater Minimize the effect of wastewater by treating the wastewater to a level required by the receiving water system Re-use of treated waste water Drip irrigation

Re-use of grey water

Water balance study: There is more than enough grey water to meet the irrigation demands Grey waste water is locally treated and used as alternative fresh water source for irrigation of parks year-round.

Biological Aerated Filter: Small footprint Limited moving parts Can be automated easily Experience with similar projects

Rain water collection and storage

Fresh water storage capacity

Canal buffers for temporary rain water storage

All collected rainwater discharges into central canal or will be infiltrated into the ground

Rainwater collection and infiltration

Green roof for Semi-basement Parking lots Infiltration storm water ditches

Porous pavements

Water harvesting in patios

Cobble ditch along footpaths Planting soil elevation is a little lower than pavement Use permeable crates to develop local waterstorage

Fresh water infiltration and recovery

Store fresh water in de ground (minimize evaporation) Dividing fresh water and brackish water

Follow-up
Construction of the urban water and landscape design started in 2011. The conceptual design is one of the corner stones of the total masterplan for eco-city Caofeidian (6.4 km2) and is an example for the development of other cities located in water scarce regions worldwide.

Blue-print for total Eco-city
