LAB 6: SETTING UP FIBER OPTIC ANALOG LINK

Objective: By the end of this lab, students should be able to: 1) Observe the relationship between the input signal and received signal of 650nm fiber optic analog link. 2) Draw and draft the input and output of the fiber optic analog link. 3) Evaluate values such as peak to peak voltage, time and frequency.

Equipments: 1. Fiber optic Trainer model ST2502. 2. Fiber Optic Cable 3. Oscilloscope. 4. Function Generator

[EP301.DTK5B] November 5, 2012 INTRODUCTION

An optical fiber is a long thin strand of impurity-free glass used as a transport medium for data. A typical point-to-point fiber optic communication network consists of a transmitter (laser), transport medium (fiber optic link) and a receiver (photodiode) as in figure below.

PROCEDURE WITHOUT FUNCTION GENERATOR ( USES ON BOARD, JUST 1K HZ ONLY)

1. Connected the power supply cord to the main power plug & to trainer ST2502. 2. Ensured that all switched faults are Off. 3. Make the following connections as shown in figure below:

B C

A. Connected the 1 KHz sine wave output to emitter l's input. B. Connected the fiber optic cable between emitter output and detector input. C. Detector 1s output to AC amplifier 1s input. 4. On the board, switched emitter l's driver to analog mode. 5. Switched ON the power supply of trainer and oscilloscope. 6. Connected the oscilloscopes probe to emitter 1 (TP5) with the output from AC amplifier 1 (TP28) and observed that the two signals are same. 7. Draft the waveform onto result page.

WITH FUNCTION GENERATOR (USE 2K, 6K, 10K, 16K AND 20K HZ)
1. Removed the connection of 1K Hz sine wave output to emitter 1s input. 2. Connected the equipment as shown in the figure below:

3. Switched ON the power of function gen. 4. Set the function generator at 2K Hz and sine wave mode for input. 5. Connected the oscilloscopes probe to emitter 1 (TP5) with the output from AC amplifier 1 (TP28) and observed that the two signals are same. 6. Repeated step 4 and 5 by using the different value of frequency. The values are state in table 3 until table 6.

DISCUSSION
In the experiment of the lab 6 in topic of fiber optic link, we did some study to determine and observes the difference between signal input and signal output. At the beginning of the experiment, we prepared two main equipments involving trainer board SCIENTECH ST2502 for fiber optic system and oscilloscope. So, advanced Fiber Optics Trainer ST2502 is designed to learn the communication techniques in Fiber Optics. The trainer demonstrates properties of Fiber Optics Transmitter & Receiver, characteristics of Fiber Optics Cable, different types of Modulation / Demodulation techniques and PC to PC communication via fiber link using RS232 interface. As our view, we observed that the amplitude of output is smallest than the amplitude of input, although the both of frequencies are same.

CONCLUSION
At the end of the laboratory work, we should be able to observe the relationship between the input signals and received signal of 650nm fiber optic analog link. After that we must draw the waveform of input and output from fiber optic trainer. Meanwhile we should be able to evaluated valus such as peak to peak voltage, time and frequency. As our conclusion, Fiber Optics as a new transmission medium has revolutionized the telecommunication industry. Fiber Optic systems have numerous performance and cost advantages over traditional radio and wire based transmission systems. The studies of Fiber Optic communication systems thus have become more important. At the end of the conclusion, we would be thanking a lot to our lecturer Mr. Azrizal given most of instruction since we would do it in our LAB EP301.
