BALI THE RIGHT WAY

Gday again punters and lets rip into the latest Kuta Weekly for another go at it. At this point in time I'm spending a short run in the land down under and boy is Bali copping some bad publicity over here. At point of hitting the keyboard for this latest ramble I've heard, from major media broadcasters in Australia, about three separate incidents todate that have seemingly rocked Bali. I don't know which one I find the most disturbing? The first one I saw was about a family that encountered a couple of intruders in their villa in Cunggu, and needless to say the fellow at the head aliasj@kutaweekly.com of the family tackled one, throwing him backwards out the window he entered the property by, however the fact that he is a fit and healthy Karate black belt didn't stop the second guy from stabbing him 3 or 4 times before fleeing the scene. The fellow was treated for his wounds and will live. The family has decided to stay in Bali and my guess is they will bolster their security measures. There is something to be said about buying a managed apartment when this this sort of thing happens as you have 24/7 security and generally one door in and one door out. The second was a story about a young fellow from Perth who went to Bali to party for the break and ended up on Lombok skulling some peculiar type cocktails and feeling a tad crook afterwards etc. etc., in short, he has ended up being medi-vacced to Royal Perth Hospital for serious treatment. After seeing this on the news for a few days the story ended up on the front page of the state's daily newspaper to announce that the young bloke had lost his battle and sadly passed. You can only imagine the distress in that household, terrible stuff. The third story was about a lady from Queensland, living in Bali, that was found floating face down in her pool. After a night shift she knocked off at 3am and went for a few quiet ones with some of her friends then retired back to her villa. As the story goes she was found floating face down in her pool, somehow alive and was raced to the hospital to be pronounced dead on arrival. All these are obviously terrible news stories out of Bali and not something that anyone likes to hear or read about, but, this thing happens all the time. These things happen all over the world, all the time and shouldn't be slammed on the news wires as the worst thing that has ever happened in the world. You can have your house robbed anywhere. You can drink something crook on any continent, and after drinking a few quiet ones with friend at the end of a busy Christmas shift you can drown in a pool anywhere. The fact that this has all happened in Bali and that a trillion people come here from Australia each week is the reason these news agencies milk the absolute hell out of the story's and try their best to, ever so slightly, misdirect the readers into believing that it only happens in Bali. This is simply not the case. It seems to me that these incidents are being investigated by the local authorities and my guess is, they will get to the bottom of most of it. Indonesia has some of the best police investigators in the world, some of which have been trained by high level Australian squads and don't think for one minute that they will leave one stone unturned with a view to protecting the interests of Bali. The Balinese have been catering for tourists for many years and the fact that they do things a little different to the way things are done at home, make no mistake, they seem to get the job done. There are good and bad elements everywhere and people should exercise common sense when it comes to things like home security and personal safety. No different to how they would if they lived on the wrong side of the tracks in Italy, London or Spain. It's the way of the world unfortunately and it's something everyone needs to be aware of. If I had read an article about the traffic in Bali being gridlocked every day during the busy holiday periods, I would agree and concur whole heartedly, but to slam the island because of a few terrible happenings is wrong as crime and criminals are everywhere. Ok folks I hope I haven't offended anyone too heavily and trust that you all keep reading the Kuta Weekly in earnest each week. I hope the most of you stay safe, happy, healthy and always remember, "he who fails to plan is planning to fail." Enjoy your week.

BALI, LOCATION TO SUIT EVERYONE

JIMBARAN
Jimbaran is just south of the airport and Kuta. This was formerly a real backwater of south Bali, just a tiny fishing village with a daily market. That all started to change in the 1980s and Jimbaran is now home to several world class 5 star beach resorts, plus a few more moderate mid-market hotels. There is however little in the way of budget accommodation and there are also many high-end villas in this area, particularly on the ridges of high ground above Jimbaran Bay. This has resulted in monikers such as the "Beverly Hills of Bali" or "Millionaire's Row". The bay itself has a pleasant white sand beach and is very safe for swimming. The three clusters of grilled seafood restaurants on the beach are a major tourist draw in the evenings, as is the truly stunning sunset. Jimbaran is also home to a Norwegian University, Gateway College, with around 500 students studying athletics, philosphy, culture, economics and journalism. The school is located in Kedonganan close to Sari Segara Resort and in Jl, Bantas Kau where it also has a small cafe. Jimbaran has an increasing number of rather chic shops but there is little or no nightlife here. It has the advantage of being a little closer to Kuta and Seminyak and the cultural highlights of Central Bali.

THE BUKIT
Much has been written about this dusty, arid and rugged area, which forms the southern most tip of the island. Limestone cliffs of up to 100 meters in height provide some of the best views in the world, along with some deserted white sandy beaches. Everyone wants a piece of this are, from international hotel chains such as Bvlgari, Versace and Banyan Tree, to established residential villa developers looking for that perfect plot. The area offers secluded beaches, and exclusivity to name but a few reasons why this is fast becoming the place to be. Prices have more than tripled in the area over last 2 years alone with still plenty of potential to be realized, so now is a plan. Only a short 15 minutes drive from the international airport, The Bukit is fast being referred to as the new Millionaires Row.

NOMINEE SYSTEM FOR HAK MILIK

This structure is a regularly practiced procedure in Indonesia, whereby the foreigner nominates and Indonesian representative to acquire the land and to hold the 'freehold' title (Hak Milik) on behalf of the foreigner. Ownership of the land is transferred from the previous owner to the Indonesian nominee. The foreigner and the Indonesian nominee then sign an agreement which recognizes the Indonesian nominee as the legal owner of the property whilst declaring the foreigner as the rightful owner of the property. This agreement denotes that the Indonesian nominee will carry out any directives from the foreigner regarding the land. This agreement must always be concluded in the presence of a public notary.

RIGHT OF USE (HAK PAKAI)

This is the right of use over state-owned (crown land) or property owned by public or private persons/entities for a specific purpose for (generally) a finite period and occasionally for an indefinite period. This land right may not be sold, exchanged or transferred unless explicitly state in an agreement. Hak pakai may be held by and Indonesian individual or entity.

With its low cost of living, balmy climate and cheap property prices, Ecuador has been ranked the top foreign retirement destination for North Americans for the fifth consecutive year.
T h e S o u t h American nation bordered by Colombia and Peru scored the highest marks in an annual ranking of the best places to retire. With monthly estimated living expenses ranging from $900 to $1,400, Ecuador surpassed Panama, Malaysia, Mexico and Costa Rica, which rounded out the top five countries. "I think the combination of a welcoming culture, the great weather, the affordability and its proximity to the United States all go together to make it a good package," Dan Prescher, the special projects editor for the survey said. "Panama has a lot of the same things going for it, but it isn't quite as affordable as Ecuador," he added in an interview. The survey analyzed data and information from correspondents in the countries most popular with American and Canadian retirees to compile the results, which were based on a host of categories, cost of living, climate, property prices,

for retirees were Spanish speaking, including Uruguay, Colombia and Spain. Thailand, which placed ninth, was the only other Asian nation to make the top ten, thanks to its affordability, exotic locales and outdoor lifestyle. Although the language may differ, Prescher said retirees adapt easily because they usually choose a country with a culture familiar to them. "Most people know or can learn enough Spanish to get along," he added. Malta squeezed in at No. 10, winning points for its very low crime rate, Mediterranean climate and abundance of English speakers. English is the second language of Malta, which is a European Union member. Ireland, France, Portugal and Italy were other EU nations that made the ranking of 22 countries, along with the Philippines and New Zealand, which scored the worst for the cost of living, along with France, but ranked high for integration. "The places that have been popular with expats for the last five to 10 years tend to stay in the rankings unless something drastic happens, a big political or economic change," Prescher explained. This week's Mars/Saturn square may squash your motivation and stymie your energy. So avoid tackling challenging projects that require extra energy and enthusiasm. Instead, try to forget frustrations, slip into relaxing holiday mode, and just take things as they come. For those who are working, Venus encourages you to consult closely with colleagues plus beautify your work space.

Taurus April 21 to May 21

Venus moves through your travel zone [from January 9 to February 2] so it's the perfect time to go on a heavenly holiday, a tropical trip or an outback adventure. When it comes to love, Neptune revs up your romantic side, but unpredictable Uranus also throws a few surprises into the relationship mix. Singles can you distinguish between a dream date and a disappointing disaster?

Scorpio October 24 to November 22

All types of communication and research are favored, as you dig up information that other signs miss. But be careful you're not so focused on minor details that you overlook the bigger picture. It's also time to get deep-and-meaningful with someone special, as you get to the bottom of a partnership problem. On the weekend you'll be busy reading, writing, texting and emailing.

Gemini May 22 to June 21

Saturn and Pluto aspects make for a week when you can communicate your ideas with extra power and passion. So discard superficial chit-chat, and make sure you've got something serious to say! Plus, with Jupiter in your sign, it's important to be 100% honest. As birthday great Elvis Presley said Truth is like the sun. You can shut it out for a time, but it ain't going away.

Sagittarius November 23 to December 21

The mid-week Sagittarian Moon boosts your enthusiasm for holiday pursuits. Saturday's New Moon stimulates your $$$ zone, and highlights flaws in your financial management. So resist the urge to be extravagant with cash and careless with credit. 2013 is the year to replace short-term whims with longterm plans, as you become much more disciplined with money.

Cancer June 22 to July 23

With the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Pluto all powering through your partnership zone, there's no escaping relationships at the moment! If you are attached, avoid being a clingy, co-dependent Crab. Strive to nurture your spouse in positive, passionate and productive ways. Singles look for love with a tender Taurus, a versatile Virgo or a caring Capricorn.

Capricorn December 22 to January 20

Vivacious Venus sashays into your sign this week [from January 9 through until February 2]. So fussy perfectionism is out and relaxed productivity is in, as you [temporarily] get the balance right between work and play. And are you bored with your usual look? Saturday's Capricorn New Moon encourages you to update your image via a wardrobe makeover or a hot new hairstyle.

Leo July 24 to August 23

As you hurtle through the holiday season, avoid saying anything controversial to frazzled family members. Saturday's New Moon highlights your wellbeing zone, so you need to focus fully on your health, diet and fitness. No excuses Cats put down the Christmas cake, get off the couch and get moving! It's also the best time of the year to have [or book] medical and dental checks.

Aquarius January 21 to February 19

You're keen to help others this week, but make sure they require your assistance. Uranus stirs up your rebellious side on the weekend and, when it comes to romance, expect the unexpected! If you are single think twice before becoming embroiled in a secret love affair. And attached Aquarians are you going out of your way to keep something hidden from your partner?

Virgo August 24 to September 23

The focus is firmly on friendships, as you communicate about things that really matter. Attached Virgos avoid getting stuck in a stultifying romantic rut! Singles vivacious Venus puts you in the mood to party like a pro this holiday season. But Saturn and Pluto push your perfectionist button, so resist the urge to set impossibly high standards for yourself [and others].

Pisces February 20 to March 20

Thursday's stars see romantic folk flirting up a storm, and artistic types hitting a creative peak. Saturday's New Moon signals a fresh start involving friendships or group activities. Plus it's the perfect time to set goals and intentions for 2013 [if you haven't done so already]. Make your hopes, dreams and wishes as big as possible you can't hit a bull's eye if you haven't got a target!

Shane Warne says he has been handed a "pretty harsh" penalty following his altercation with Marlon Samuels in Sunday night's Big Bash League match at the MCG.
Warne was banned for one match and fined $4,500 for his heated exchange with Samuels during the match between the Stars and the Renegades in front of a record crowd of 46,681. Warne and the Melbourne Stars have decided against appealing the penalty. A n g r y a t Samuels for having obstructed team-mate David Hussey running during the Stars' innings, Warne grabbed at the West Indian's shirt during the Renegades' run chase and the pair exchanged angry words. Moments later Warne, in an apparently deliberate act, hit Samuels with the ball when fielding near the batsman. This led Samuels to throw his bat in the air and invite Warne to engage in an extended physical exchange. Warne was charged with four alleged breaches under Cricket Australia's (CA) code of behaviour, although his fine only related to three offences. He was fined $3,000 for engaging in inappropriate and deliberate physical contact with another player and $1,000 for using obscene and offensive language. A $500 sanction was also

decision and given a suspended $1,000 fine. After the match Warne attempted to play down the incident, preferring to focus on the result with the Stars having suffered a nine-wicket loss to their cross-town rivals. "I tried to throw the ball to (wicketkeeper) Bobby Quiney and the next minute I decided to get out of the way of that bat," Warne said. "I'm more disappointed that we lost, that was just a heat of the moment thing. "That's just the way it goes, I hope he's OK." The latest incident has again put Samuels in the spotlight for the wrong reasons. A d e l a i d e Strikers coach Darren Berry will face a CA disciplinary hearing for an argument he had with with Samuels prior to last Wednesday night's match between the two sides. Brisbane Heat coach Darren Lehmann was given a suspended $3,000 fine and a reprimand for doubting the legality of Samuels' bowling action last month. Samuels was forced to retire hurt on 17 against the Stars after a top edge from a Lasith Malinga short-pitched delivery hit his helmet. He left the field bleeding under his eye socket and is set to miss the remainder of the tournament.

Warne briefly appeared before the media on Monday and expressed his displeasure with the sanctions handed down by CA. "I'm very conscious about the image of the game and I'm

ALL ABOUT BALI

HINDU CEREMONIES OF BALI
SARASWATI DAY (HARI RAYA SARASWATI) Saraswati Day is celebrated on the12th January 2013, the very last day of the Balinese Pawukon calendar, being the Saturday of its last week, Watugunung. Dewi Saraswati is generally referred to as Goddess of 'Science & Knowledge'. Dewi Saraswati is the female counter-part of the Balinese god Dewa Brahma, the manifestation of the Almighty Infinite Spirit as the Creator. The spiritual symbolism of Saraswati The materialistic world views that dominate the modern world we live in, have caused considerable mis-interpretations of the religious symbols found in Balinese Hinduism. The main reason for this is a general loss of the ability to think in 'parallels', to communicate in symbols and analogies. Instead, modern man tends to interpret most religious symbols literally. Nowadays the Knowledge/Science symbolized by Saraswati is generally interpreted as pure secular, scientific knowledge; at libraries offerings are made for books and other important written materials, such as the lontar; books and (written) language are seen as the vessels of secular, scientific knowledge. At the schools and universities the students pray for success with their studies. During Saraswati Day it is not allowed to read, which can be compared with our 'one minute silence', in honour of the 'gift' of books and language which enables mankind to pass on the scientific knowledge that leads to secular success. In itself these 'modern' interpretations do no harm as far as the importance of secular, scientific knowledge for the education and development of the worldy career of the individual is concerned. However the loss of the original interpretation of the religious symbols, their actual meaning, does serious harm to the spiritual development of the Balinese as an individual, and to the spiritual progress of the Balinese as a people. And since the spiritual symbolism is universal, loss of spiritual consciousness concerns not only the Balinese but all of mankind, as individuals as well as a race. Unfortunately, the true Knowledge of Saraswati, the knowledge of the mathematical science that defines the octaves of existence, and which rules and controls the cycles of life of all manifestations (also referred to as sacred geometry), and which enables mankind to be a true Master of his life, is not taught in our schools and universities, nor is it taught by our religious leaders.

disappointed in some of my actions last night," he said. "But I'm also pretty disappointed with the severity of the penalties. I think that was pretty harsh." The Stars will consider their legal and appeal options in regard to the sanctions. Samuels has been handed two alleged breaches, including participating in "unbecoming behaviour". He is still to face his disciplinary hearing. Warne's Stars team-mate Cameron White was also charged

Will You Live to see 85?
I recently picked a new G.P. doctor. After two visits and exhaustive Lab tests, he said I was doing 'fairly well' for my age. (yeh I just reached 65). A little concerned about that comment, I couldn't resist asking him, 'Do you think I'll live to be 85?' He asked, 'Do you smoke tobacco, or drink beer, wine or hard liquor? 'Oh not much grog these days and don't smoke' I replied. 'I'm not doing drugs, either!' Then he asked, 'Do you eat rib-eye steaks, fatty roasts and barbecued Ribs? 'I said, 'Not much.... my former doctor said that all red meat is very unhealthy!' 'Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, boating, sailing, surfing, hiking, or bicycling?' 'No, I don't,' I said. He asked, 'Do you gamble, drive fast cars, or have a lot of sex?' 'No,' I said... He looked at me and said, 'Then, why the hell do you want to live to 85?'

New batting coach vital for Australia

The person Australia chooses to fill the vacant role of full-time national team batting coach could be the most important selection of the year with the Ashes looming.
This summer, Australia's batting resources have been rocked to the core both on and off the field. Nearly 250 matches worth of Test experience have been drained from the line-up by the retirements of Ricky Ponting and Mike Hussey. Not to mention the huge loss of batting mentor Justin Langer, and now the departure of his successor Stuart Law announced by Cricket Australia on Sunday. With an Indian series beginning next month before the Ashes tour starts in July, the timing of the mass exodus could not be worse. Captain Michael Clarke has already made it clear there is no way of replacing the intellectual property that has been lost. But the next best thing CA can do is handpick a batting coach capable of bringing the best out of a new generation of batsmen. Australia knew they were losing one of their most valuable

Dear Martha,

I spent 2 weeks on holiday in Bali over Xmas & New Year; it was fantastic except for the traffic. The traffic in Bali was horrendous in all the usual tourist spots & at Simpang Siur. It -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------was in total grid lock in Kuta on New Year's Day & was consistently slow & hazardous at Simpang Siur whenever we went that way not to mention the airport which was a total disaster! I appreciate that an underpass & tollway are currently under construction, however, will this really fix the traffic problem? I would suggest that it is a short term fix & given 3 years it will be back to the chaotic mess that it is now. Somebody somewhere has to be accountable for the traffic -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------congestion that I saw whilst holidaying there, apart from it taking 2 hours to get from Jimbaran beach to Kuta (which is totally unacceptable), the roads are dangerous with bikes & cars vying for 'pole position' at traffic lights, bikes just pulling out without looking & police cars driving on the wrong Included Transport, Lunch side of the road with sirens blazing to get through Winners Trophy & Champagne the traffic. I can only describe the roads in Bali as a KUTA TOWNHOUSES @ 0361-761464, 081337207304 mess! Kate Dear Kate, Couldn't agree with you more dear. The traffic is certainly worsening on a daily basis & is atrocious when there is a national holiday. Perhaps a sign erected at all entry points with 'Sorry Bali is full' might be the answer?? Although removing all the drunk trouble makers could be a better solution.

The Aussies lost wickets at regular intervals as the crowd repeatedly chanted for Hussey to come out and cap off a fairytale finish to a wonderful Test career, alongside Mitchell Johnson (1 not out). "I couldn't have dreamed of it, I can remember when I hadn't even played and Jason Gillespie said to me 'I reckon you've got 50 Tests in you, Huss'," he told Grandstand. Hussey steps away from Test cricket and, while he has yet to retire from the limited overs game, he was omitted from Australia's squad for the first two ODI matches against Sri Lanka. But his younger brother David will continue the Hussey tradition in Australian gold, with Michael wishing him all the best. "I hope [David] goes well, it's a great opportunity for a lot of guys now around the Australian team," Hussey said. "We'll see which one's going to stand up and take his opportunity and be part of the next generation of Australian cricket. "I hope it is [David], he really wants it, but we'll really have to wait and see."

Bruno Mars Locked Out Of Heaven

Peter Gene Hernndez (born October 8, 1985), known by his stage name Bruno Mars, is an American singer-songwriter and record producer. Raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, by a family of musicians, Mars began making music at a young age and performed in various musical venues in his hometown throughout his childhood. He graduated from high school and then moved to Los Angeles, California to pursue a musical career. Mars produced songs for other artists, joining production team The Smeezingtons. Mars had an unsuccessful stint with Motown Records, but then signed with Atlantic Records in 2009. He became recognized as a solo artist after lending his vocals and co-writing the hooks for the songs "Nothin' on You" by B.o.B, and "Billionaire" by Travie McCoy. He also co-wrote the hits "Right Round" by Flo Rida featuring Ke$ha, and "Wavin' Flag" by K'naan. In October 2010, he released his debut album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans. Anchored by the worldwide numberone singles "Just the Way You Are" and "Grenade" the album peaked at number three on the Billboard 200. Mars was nominated for seven Grammys at the 53rd Grammy Awards, winning Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for "Just the Way You Are". His second studio album, Unorthodox Jukebox, was released on December 11, 2012. Mars' music is noted for displaying a wide variety of styles and influences, and contains elements of many musical genres. He has worked with an assortment of artists from various genres. As a child, he was highly influenced by artists such as Little Richard, Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson and would often impersonate these artists from a young age. Mars also incorporates reggae and Motown inspired sounds into his work. Worldwide, Mars became the bestselling digital artist in 2011. He had three singles in the top ten, including first place with "Just the Way You Are," which sold 12.5 million copies. Mars won Best International Male Solo Artist at the 2012 BRIT Awards. Bruno Mars has sold 6 million albums and 40 million singles worldwide. playing guitar after drawing inspiration from Jimi Hendrix. In 2010, he also acknowledged his Hawaiian roots and musical family as an influence, explaining, "Growing up in Hawaii made me the man I am. I used to do a lot of shows in Hawaii with my father's band. Everybody in my family sings, everyone plays instruments...I've just been surrounded by it." In 2003, shortly after graduating from President Theodore Roosevelt High School at the age of seventeen, Mars moved to Los Angeles, California, to pursue a musical career. He adopted his stage name from the nickname his father gave him, adding "Mars" at the end because "I felt like I didn't have [any] pizzazz, and a lot of girls say I'm out of this world, so I was like I guess I'm from Mars."

"I'm a little bit embarrassed about [the send-offs], to be honest - the support has just been overwhelming," he said. "I can't believe it and I've got to thank the Sydney crowd so much because they've been absolutely fantastic. "There's always pressure, that's what Test cricket is all about. Life and career

19852003: Early life and musical beginnings Bruno Mars was born Peter Gene Hernndez on October 8, 1985, in Honolulu, Hawaii, and was raised in the Waikiki neighborhood of Honolulu. He is the son of Peter Hernndez and Bernadette "Bernie" San Pedro Bayot. His father is of half Puerto Rican and half Jewish (from Hungary and Ukraine) descent, and is originally from Brooklyn, New York. Mars' mother immigrated to Hawaii from the Philippines as a child, and is of Filipino and some Spanish descent. His parents met while performing in a show, where his mother was a hula dancer and his father played percussion. At the age of two, he was nicknamed "Bruno" by his father, because of his resemblance to legendary professional wrestler Bruno Sammartino. Mars was one of six children and came from a musical family who exposed him to a diverse mix of reggae, rock, hip hop, and R&B. In addition to being a dancer, his mother was a singer and his father used his musical ability to perform Little Richard rock n roll music. Mars' uncle was an Elvis impersonator, and encouraged three-yearold Mars to perform on stage as well. Mars also performed songs by artists such as Michael Jackson, The Isley Brothers, and The Temptations. At age four, Mars began performing five days a week with his family's band, The Love Notes, in which he became known on the island for his impersonation of Presley. In 1990, Mars was featured in MidWeek as "Little Elvis", going on to have a cameo in the film Honeymoon in Vegas in 1992. His time spent impersonating Presley had a major impact on Mars' musical evolution and performing techniques. He later began

And about 20 state schools in New South Wales have provided guidelines to parents urging them to avoid wearing bikinis or offensive T-shirts. The Australian Council for Civil Liberties said smoking bans were justified as public health measures but the other new rules were excessive. States already had liquor acts that banned serving drinks to people who have drunk too much, it said. "If there is a problem, it lies with the enforcement," Terry O'Gormon, the council's head, said.

A man who evaded authorities for 23 years on charges he unlawfully imported more than $10 million worth of caviar into the United States was spared jail time at his sentencing.
Instead, a judge in U.S. District Court in Manhattan imposed a punishment of time already served on Isidoro "Mario" Garbarino, 69, who has been in custody since September 10. An Italian national, Garbarino was also fined $10,000 and will likely be

His company supplied the fish roe to gourmet stores such as Zabar's in New York as well as major air and cruise lines, prosecutors said. At his sentencing before U.S. District Judge Kevin Duffy, Garbarino fought back tears as he apologized. I'm sorry," said Garbarino. "There are no words in the vocabulary for me."

Machete-wielding man jailed after attacking flatmate

IT WAS a case of barbecue banter gone mad, steaks, a pet chicken and a machetewielding flatmate. The unusual combination at a seemingly normal barbecue at John Graham Potts and his flatmate's home on May 19 last year ended in deep gash and 12month jail stint. A s C r o w n prosecutor Isaac Munsie explained in Brisbane District Court, where Gladstone-born Potts was sentenced for grievous bodily harm, the gathering went haywire when Potts and his roomie argued over steaks and pets. "The complainant became angry because the defendant hurt a chicken in the house," Mr Munsie said. Not one to chicken out, the fired-up flatmate pushed Potts, 46, over the couch.
Court documents stated the flatmate tended to his pet and relocated the egg-laying creature outside the Brisbane house. In the meantime, an intoxicated Potts grabbed a above his head and bringing it down on the victim's forearm. Party-goers then tackled Potts to the ground and took away the machete. Judge Anthony Rafter said the victim had suffered a five centimetre laceration and cut tendons. The defence argued the accused's action were at a time when he had no employment and no control over his alcohol problem. The court heard Potts now lived on North Stradbroke Island, was undergoing rehabilitation and had a peaceful life. Judge Rafter pointed out Potts had a history of violent assaults, including on police and a hospital security guard. He sentenced Potts to three years jail to be released on parole after one year.

Scientists spot elusive giant squid

NHK showed footage of the silver-coloured creature, which had huge black eyes, as it swam against the current, holding a bait squid in its arms against the backdrop of dark oceanic depths. The creature was about three metres long, but estimated to be as long as eight metres if its two long arms had not been chopped off, Kubodera said. "It was shining and so beautiful. I was so thrilled when I saw it first hand, but I was confident we would because we rigorously researched the areas we might find it, based on past data." He gave no explanation for its missing arms. He said it was the first video footage of a live giant squid in its natural habitat - the depths of the sea where there is little oxygen. Kobudera, a squid specialist, also filmed what he says was the

Scientists and broadcasters in Japan say they have captured footage of an elusive giant squid up to eight metres long that roams the depths of the Pacific Ocean.
Japan's National Science Museum succeeded in filming the deep-sea creature in its natural habitat for the first time, working with Japanese public broadcaster NHK and the US Discovery Channel. They spotted the squid at a depth of 630 metres using a submersible in July, some 15 kilometres east of Chichi island in the north Pacific Ocean. The submarine with three people on board, including Tsunemi Kubodera from the museum, followed the enormous mollusc to a depth of 900 metres as it swam into the ocean abyss.
