BUCKET ELEVATOR ROTARY KNIFE CUTTER TO CENTRIFUGAL CLEANER

DESIGN DESCRIPTION The bucket elevator will aid in the transportation of the shredded papers from the Rotary Knife Cutter to the Centrifugal Cleaning Tank. DESIGN SELECTION It is well adopted to light materials, employed with gentle discharge which prevents the materials from excessive degradation, making it effective for handling the shredded papers. DATA AND ASSUMPTION 1. The feed coming from the Rotary Knife Cutter is 55.89 kg/batch (Based on the material balance). 2. The distance between the Rotary Knife Cutter is 3 m. 3. The height of the Centrifugal Cleaning Tank is 2.74 m (Based on the Centrifugal Cleaning Tank Design) 4. An additional of 0.5 m is allotted as the clearance for the elevation from the ground. DESIGN CONSIDERATION 1. The material of Construction is Carbon Steel. 2. The capacity of the bucket elevator is up to 150 tons/hr (p. 61, Unit Operations by: George Granger Brown, 1950). 3. The rolling friction factor of 0.20 is allotted for chain rollers which are grease (p. 61, Unit Operations by: George Granger Brown, 1950). 4. The turning resistance should be increased by 10% for friction of head and foot shaft, and 15% for each pair of gear reductions to obtain the gross turning effort (p. 61, Unit Operations by: George Granger Brown, 1950). 5. The weight of existing elevator is 3.048 kg/m (based on commercial design). 6. The chain rollers used to have a diameter of 2 in (0.0508 m) (based on commercial design).

7. The bushing/pin diameter is 1 in (0.0254 m) (Based on commercial design). DESIGN REQUIREMENTS 1. Angle of inclination. 2. Conveyor length. 3. Rolling friction. 4. Turning resistance. 5. Power requirement. DESIGN CALCULATION 1. Angle of Inclination To get the angle of inclination, use Pythagorean Theorem: Tan = Opposite/Adjacent Opposite = H + Clearance Opposite = 2.74 m + 0.5m Tan = (2.74 m + 0.5 m) / 3 m = 47.20O

2. Conveyor Length Sin = opposite / hypotenuse Sin = (2.74 m + 0.5 m) / L L = 4.4158 m

3. Rolling friction Using the equation from p. 61, Unit Operations by: George Granger Brown, 1950:

where: x = 0.20, rolling friction factor. D = diameter of the chain roller. d = diameter of the bushing/pin upon roller turns.

Rf = 0.12/m 4. Turning Resistance: Rt = L (M + W) [(Rfcos) + sin] + WL [(Rfcos) sin] where: M = mass of material being conveyed per meter of the conveyor W = mass of buckets per meter L = length of the elevator from head shaft to foot shaft. Rf = rolling friction
