GEK1521 / PC1326 Tutorial 5 ( Lecture 15-18: Waves, Electromagnetism )

1. Earthquakes create waves that propagate in Earths rocky layer. The waves inside the rocks can be divided into two types: P-wave and S-wave, which are demonstrated in the following diagram:

Considering the waves introduced in the lectures: a) Water wave b) Rope wave c) Sound d) Light

i) P-wave is similar to which of the above waves? ii) S-wave is similar to which of the above waves? iii) For a low-depth earthquake, the speed of P-wave is about 5 km/s and that of S-wave is about 3 km/s. If you are at a location 100 km away from the centre of earthquake, do you feel horizontal vibration or vertical vibration first? What is the time interval between the arrival of the first wave and the strike of both waves? This may just be the time you have to find a safe place.

2. The waveform of a travelling wave at an instant is shown below.

i) What is the amplitude? ii) What is the wavelength? iii) What is the frequency?

a) 0.5 m a) 0.5 m a) 50 Hz

b) 1 m b) 1 m b) 100 Hz

c) 2 m d) 4 m c) 2 m d) 4 m c) 200 Hz d) 400 Hz

3. You are sitting a certain distance from a point charge, and you measure an electric field of E0. If the charge is doubled and your distance from the charge is also doubled, what is the electric field strength now? a) b) c) d) e) 4 E0 2 E0 E0 1/2 E0 1/4 E0

4. Look at the equipotential and field lines of a dipole:

B C

i) Does it costs energy to move a charge on an equipotential line? Why? ii) Is the field always perpendicular to equipotential lines? Why? iii) Where is the V=0 equipotential line? iv) Must V = 0 coincide with E = 0? v) Among the three positions A, B, and C, at which point does an electron experience the largest force? vi) Among A, B and C, at which point does an electron have the highest potential energy?

5. The battery capacity of a lithium ion battery in a digital music player is 750 mA-h. The manufacturer claims that the player can operate for eight hours if the battery is initially fully charged. Given this information, determine the number of electrons that flow through the player as you listen to your favorite songs for three hours. 6. Although its not safe to directly touch the power outlet in your home, you can use a test pen to check the power lines. When you hold the test pen correctly and put it in a power outlet, a current flows through the test pen, your body and into the ground. Suppose the current through your body should be limited below 1 mA, what is the minimum resistance the test pen should have?

7. A constant electric current produces which one of the following: a) b) c) d) A gravitational field An electric field A magnetic field An electromagnetic wave.

8. A vertical wire carries a current straight down. To the east of this wire, the magnetic field points a) North b) East c) South d) Down

9. An electron moving along the +x axis enters a region where there is a uniform magnetic field in the +y direction. What is the direction of the magnetic force on the electron? (+x to right, +y up, and +z out of the page.) a) +z direction b) -z direction c) -y direction d) -x direction

10. In the figure below, charged particles move in the vicinity of a current-carrying wire. For each charged particle, the arrow indicates the direction of motion of the particle, and the + or - indicates the sign of the charge. For each of the particles, indicate the direction of the magnetic force due to the magnetic field produced by the wire.

11. Determine the direction of B for each case, where F represents the maximum magnetic force on a

v. positively charged particle moving with velocity

12. A horizontal wire carries a current and is in a vertical magnetic field. What is the direction of the force on the wire?
