LESSON I
1. The Order of Words in a Sentence
In an English sentence, the subject usually precedes the verb, except in questions
Is going Martha to the library ?
Martha is going to the library

2. The Gender of Words in English


3. Articles and adjectives are invariable ; they have no gender as they have in
Spanish. One exception is blond, blonde, derived from French.
The little boy The little girl
The blond boy The blonde girl

B. The only pronouns which indicate gender are he (masculine), she (feminine) and
it (neuter). He and she refer to persons in the singular, an it refers to a thing.
For an animal it is generally used, but he or she is often used in speaking of a
pet.
Where is your father ? He is at the office
Where is your sister ? She is in Bogotá D.C.
Is that dog friendly ? Yes, it is very friendly
Is the cat playing with the children ? Yes, he is playing with them

C. Nouns indicating persons often differ in the masculine and feminine forms.
Among the most common ones are the following :
man - woman male - female
father - mother king - queen
husband - wife monk - nun
son - daughter actor - actress
brother - sister host - hostess
boy - girl bridegroom - bride

3. The Subject Pronouns I, you, he, she, it,we, you, they.


Subject pronouns are always expressed, except in imperative sentences. I is always
written wit a capital letter. You is both singular and plural, polite and familiar.
They refers to both things and persons in plural.
The university is very large
It is very large

4. The Definite and Indefinite Articles


5. The definite article the is the same in the singular and the plural. Before a vowel
sound it is pronounced di . Before a consonant sound is is pronounced
de .
di : the ocean, the Andes
de : the sister, the doorbell

6. The indefenite article has two forms, a and an. Before a consonant sound a is
used. Before a vowel sound an is used.
7. : a student, a summer
(an) : an article, an Englishman

6. The Form and Position of Adjectives


The form of adjectives does not change in the plural. They usually precede the
nouns that they modify.
the large classes the interesting letters
the old houses the white handkerchiefs

7.2. Practice changing the words in italics to pronouns

7.3. Add the correct Definite Article to this nouns
