The Third Eye of Horus

Those of us whove been interested in raising our awareness for awhile have no doubt come across more than one mention of the Third Eye in our studies. Said to be the seat of psychic vision and extra-sensory awareness, everyone has one. The Third Eye is said to correspond to the pineal gland, deep in the center of the brain. This pineal gland is part of the endocrine system, and its physical function in the endocrine system is to secrete the hormone melatonin which regulates the sleep/wake cycle.

The correlation between the Eye of Horus and the internal structure of the center of the brain, where the Third Eye is located, is quite striking, isnt it? Did the Egyptians knowingly design the Eye of Horus as a diagram of the internal structure of the human brain, the physical seat of the Third Eye Chakra? The Egyptians were aware of the chakras, the power centers of the body. We refer to them as chakras using the Indian word for them (it means wheels as in spinning wheels of energy) simply because the Yogis of India managed to preserve their study of the bodys energy systems into this century. From there they found their way into the Western mind and metaphysical communities. The Ancient Egyptians were very aware of this energy system, along with various bodies that we possessed on various levels of reality, and it was indeed a part of their mystery schools. If you look deeper into the mystery schools of Sekhmet you will find that she was the goddess of this life energy (the breath, the life, the power) and it was in Her temple that one learned to raise the sekhem (the power) or kundalini through the cleansing and activation of the chakras. So why the Eye of Horus then, why not represent this power center using the Uraeus of Sekhmet? She was crowned by a serpent (uraeus) holding up the sun disk, after all. Horus was the Son of the Sun, he was the enlightened one made flesh upon the earth. Horus was the hero of their mythological system, the one who defeated the powers of darkness and chaos and beat them back, thereby ensuring that order and productivity, the ebb and flow of the Nile on a regular schedule, could continue to enable their powerful civilization to thrive. Raising ones awareness, similarly, enables YOU to fend off the powers of darkness and chaos, by shining the light of your awareness, understanding, SEEING through the shadows, gathering their gift and shining your light of UNDERSTANDING through them, so that they disappear. Seeing is often used as a synonym for understanding. When someone says do you see how that works? they dont necessarily mean can you visually see it. What they really mean is: do you understand how that works - right? And we just automatically know that. But how much do we really think about that correspondance between seeing at a higher level, and understanding? If we could see through our third eye without ANY filters, would we not see the world as it truly is, with the shadows pulled back completely? And in SEEING the world as it truly is, would we not see everything as ENERGY, different frequencies and wavelengths of LIGHT, and so then would we not UNDERSTAND everything clearly as simply that? As wavelengths of energy?

I believe the Ancient Egyptians DID know this, and that it factored into their beliefs about the different chakras and aura bodies that make up the living physical human. I believe that theres no such thing as coincidence and that this relevence of the structure of the Eye of Horus to the internal structure of the center of the human brain, the seat of the Third eye, is also no coincidence. Its common knowledge that the Ancient Egyptians mummified their dead. Whats not common knowledge is how advanced their medical knowledge was, and if you think about it, mummification was not a simple thing. It was an extremely complicated process and ritual, and there were reasons for that, reasons that rested on very solid knowledge of how the human body was constructed and how it works. Did you know that the pineal gland is shaped like a pine cone? I didnt. Why is this significant? Because one of the symbols of enLIGHTenment for thousands and thousands of years has been the pine cone. Interesting. You know what else is even more interesting? The fact that this tiny, pine-cone shaped gland that sits at the center of your brain is responsible for the production of melatonin, the hormone that controls your wake/sleep cycle. So this gland actually does function as a sort of eye deep in the center of the brain, as it determines when you will sleep and when you will WAKE UP. Want to know something else thats super fascinating about this little tiny gland in the center of your brain? In non-mammals, this gland is composed of cells that resemble retinal cells, as in, the retina of the EYE, the part of the eye that recieves and processes LIGHT, so that you can SEE. Now we are mammals, true enough, but there are some scientists who believe that the cells that compose this gland are evolved from the same types of cells that retinal cells have evolved from. They are related, in other words.

Furthermore, in fossils non-mammalian vertebrates such as early birds, the skulls have a pineal opening! An actual, PHYSICAL third eye! This is backed up by the fact that some living fossils still have this third eye organ in place, the lamprey being one of them. And yes, this third eye is sensitive to light. In some of these animals, the structure of this physical, external third eye is more or less the same as any other eye lens, cornea and retina. During the course of evolution, as we lost the need for this third eye to register light and dark and control our cycles of sleep (and possibly reproductive cycles as well) because our seeing eyes developed the ability to send light signals directly to the pineal gland through the nerve system within the brain.

Lastly, another interesting fact for those of us seeking higher awareness: this gland can calcify, and scientists see this as happening with age. They seem to think of this as normal. I have to wonder if its really due to age as much as inactivity, or even worse, is it a side effect of not just lack of use, but of forgetting how to access this higher sight? Does it have to do with turning off this ability to see things at a higher level? This gland has always been believed by scientists to be a vestigal remnant of a larger organ. It seems even scientists feel theres something more to this tiny little gland than they have been able to uncover so far. In antiquity, the pineal gland was believed to be the seat of the soul. The Egyptians are on record as describing this inner part of the brain as the Sun or the Eye of God. The proper name for the Eye of Horus was originally the Eye of Ra. This Eye became personified as a goddess, called wadjet or uadjet, also known as the Daughter of Ra, which was one of the titles of Sekhmet. It is said by some that the uraeus was another symbol of the goddess wadjet, the cobra rising up in defense, also the risen one which brings another reference to resurrection, which is part of the myth of Horus. The same uraeus that holds the sun disk on the brow of Sekhmet, and on the royal crown of the Pharoah of Egypt. The Eye of Horus/ Eye of Ra/ Wedjet/ Daughter of Ra was a potent and powerful symbol of protection, wisdom and the ability to see or know anything desired. It also carried a very intense destructive potential as well. One has to wonder if this destructive aspect is a warning against using the powers of this eye for darker purposes. The story of Ra and his Daughter the wadjet tells of exactly that. Ra becomes angry and insulted by his peoples lack of respect for him, so he pulls this aspect of his Daughter, the wadjet or Eye, from the uraeus on his royal crown and sends her to earth in the form of a lion (Sekhmet) to wreak revenge on mankind for their insults. Once released, she could not be stopped, even when Ra called her back, she didnt respond, lost in her bloodlust. He had to trick her into drinking beer colored red with pomegranate juice, and once drunk, she fell asleep for 3 days, putting an end to her destructive wrath. Did the Ancient Egyptians know, somehow, of this glands power to affect the sleep and wake cycles? Im certain they knew of this chakra centers influence on ones journey toward enlightenment. Is this symbol a diagram of the center of the brain, and a record of their understanding that this brain center affects not only the sleep cycles but also ones access to higher sight and enlightenment? Could be. After all, Horus was the Son of the Sun, and this is the Eye of the Sun, a symbol of wisdom and power given to Horus by his father to be used to defend the weak, care for the sick, and light the path home for us all. ~Article by Melissa Troyer of Resonates With Me.
