Proton pump inhibitors reduce the production of acid by blocking the enzyme in the wall of the stomach that

produces acid. The reduction of acid prevents ulcers and allows any ulcers that exist in the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum to heal.

H 2 antagonist definition Pronunciation: /-t{uuml}-/ Function: n : a drug (as cimetidine, famotidine, nizatidine, or ranitidine) thatreduces or inhibits the secr etion of gastric acid by bindingcompetitively with histamine to H 2 receptors on cell membra nescalled also H 2 receptor antagonist Acid suppressants, such as histamine H2-antagonists (blockers). Histamine is a chemical released in the body under many different conditions. In the stomach it can release more acid, so blocking histamines action reduces acid production. Proton-pump inhibitors also work on the cells in the stomach wall, which make acid, to reduce the amount of acid produced and released into the stomach chamber.

Other medicines (called pro-kinetic agents) increase the movement of the stomach. They work by increasing the pressure of the lower oesophageal sphincter (the point where the oesophagus joins the stomach) and promote emptying of the stomach.--- Benzamide
