Technical and Historical Notes

During the Bloody Valentine War, ZAFT's ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam comes to be known as one of the most powerful mobile suits ever created. In the C.E. 73, ZAFT creates a successor unit, the ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam. However, the Strike Freedom is stolen by Terminal, a secret organization associated with followers of Lacus Clyne. The Strike Freedom is a major improvement over the original Freedom Gundam in various respects. The wings feature new high output thrusters developed from the "Voiture Lumiere" propulsion system used by the GSX-401FW Stargazer Gundam. The Strike Freedom is powered by the hyper deuterion nuclear reactor technology developed by ZAFT. This new design stores power in deuterion form, providing a continuous deuterion charge and, in theory, an endless power supply. However, it's possible for the suit's power to be expended before the reactor can replenish it. The Strike Freedom features a pair of new beam shield generators, similar to ones used by the ZGMF-X42S Destiny Gundam. The Strike Freedom retains a set of hip-mounted rail cannons, although the cannons can swivel behind the main body and swap places with a pair of hip-mounted, combinable beam rifles (similar to the old GAT-X103 Buster Gundam). The Strike Freedom is

also armed with a chest beam cannon, head-mounted vulcan guns and a pair of beam sabers. The biggest change in armaments, however, is in the Strike Freedom's wings. Where the original Freedom Gundam carried a pair of plasma beam cannons, the Strike Freedom features eight DRAGOON (Disconnected Rapid Armament Group Overlook Operation Network) units. The DRAGOON units housed in the wings utilize an improved quantum communications system, allowing normal pilots without expanded spatial awareness to use them. Also, like the original Freedom Gundam, the Strike Freedom is capable of docking with the METEOR mobile weapons platform. In early C.E. 74, the original Freedom Gundam is destroyed in a battle with Shinn Asuka's ZGMF-X56S Impulse Gundam. The Strike Freedom first enters combat when Kira Yamato flies into Earth orbit in the MBF-02 Strike Rouge to assist the Eternal, under attack by ZAFT forces. Afterwards, Kira, accompanied by Lacus Clyne in the ZGMF-X19A Justice Gundam, returns to Earth and rendezvous with the Archangel. With ZAFT's attack on the Orb Union in full swing, Kira joins in the defense of Orb and engages Shinn's new Destiny Gundam. When the Three Ships Alliance heads to space to counter ZAFT's forces, Kira participates in the final battle over the Moon. During the battle, he causes heavy damage to Rey Za Burrel's ZGMF-X666S Legend Gundam. Using the METEOR, Kira also heavily damages ZAFT's mobile space fortress Messiah. Soon after, the death of PLANT Supreme Council Chairman Gilbert Durandal and the destruction of Messiah mark the end of the war.

Technical and Historical Notes

After successfully stealing four of the Earth Alliance's prototype Gundam mobile suits, ZAFT reverse engineers them and incorporates new technologies such as Phase Shift armor and beam sabers into their own mobile suits. With these new technologies, ZAFT also builds several Gundams of their own under the direction of leader Patrick Zala. Unlike previous Gundam designs, these new units feature a dangerous new technology: the N-Jammer Canceler. ZAFT originally develops the N-Jammer to prevent the Alliance from using nuclear weapons, but this also means that mobile suits have to be powered by short life energy batteries. By creating the NJammer Canceler, a mobile suit can use a nuclear fission reactor and function for a nearly unlimited amount of time even with Phase Shift armor activated. Unfortunately, the N-Jammer Canceler technology proves to be a Pandora's Box that falls into the wrong hands.

The ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam is one of the new Gundam designs built by ZAFT. The Freedom Gundam is equipped with a wide variety of powerful weapons for use in its HiMAT (High Mobility Aerial Tactics) mode. One of these weapons is the twin "Balaena" plasma beam cannons, which are stored in the wings and mounted over the shoulders during use. The Freedom Gundam's other main armament consists of twin hip-mounted "Xiphias" rail cannons. Other standard armaments include head vulcans, twin beam sabers and a beam rifle. The Freedom Gundam is also capable of using something far more powerful: the METEOR support system. This mobile weapons platform is designed specifically for use by the Freedom Gundam and ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam and is stored aboard the support ship Eternal. By using the METEOR, the Freedom Gundam can deliver a blitzkrieg attack utilizing various cannons, missile launchers and two long beam swords.

The Freedom Gundam is first used in May C.E. 71 when Kira Yamato steals it with the help of Lacus Clyne. Kira uses his new suit to travel to Earth and join the battle between ZAFT and the Alliance at Alaska. Following the battle, Kira rejoins his comrades on the Archangel and travels to Orb after Murrue Ramius decides to defect from the Alliance. There, Kira fights to protect Orb from the Alliance and is later joined by his old friend and former enemy Athrun Zala piloting his new ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam. Following the defeat of Orb, Kira returns to space and is joined by Lacus Clyne and her stolen support ship Eternal, which provides Kira with his METEOR support system. Along with Athrun, Kira uses his METEOR to save the PLANTs from destruction by nuclear missiles. At the war's end on September 27, the Freedom Gundam is

heavily damaged in a battle against Rau Le Creuset's ZGMF-X13A Providence Gundam. After the war, the Freedom Gundam is secretly repaired and hidden in Orb. In late C.E. 73, the Freedom Gundam is reactivated by Kira to fight off a squad of UMF/SS0-3 ASH mobile suits used by a group of special ops Coordinators sent to assassinate Lacus. In early C.E. 74, PLANT Supreme Council Chairman Gilbert Durandal orders the destruction of the Archangel and Freedom Gundam after their interference in several battles between the Alliance and ZAFT. Soon after, ZAFT then initiates Operation Angel Down, and during that battle the Freedom Gundam is destroyed by Shinn Asuka's ZGMF-X56S Impulse Gundam. Kira later upgrades to the Freedom Gundam's successor, the ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam.

After successfully stealing four of the Earth Alliance's prototype Gundam mobile suits, ZAFT reverse engineers them and incorporates new technologies such as Phase Shift armor and beam sabers into their own mobile suits. With these new technologies, ZAFT also builds several Gundams of their own under the direction of Supreme Council Chairman Patrick Zala. By creating the N-Jammer Canceler, a mobile suit can use a nuclear fission reactor and function for a nearly unlimited amount of time even with Phase Shift armor activated. Unfortunately, the N-Jammer Canceler technology proves to be a Pandora's Box that falls into the wrong hands.

The ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam is one of the new Gundams built by ZAFT. The main feature of this mobile suit is the Fatum-00 backpack, which also doubles as a subflight system operable in space or on Earth. The Fatum-00 can also be operated via remote control and be used as a separate attack unit in battle. The Justice Gundam's main armaments are stored on the backpack, but a pair of vulcan guns, beam sabers and beam boomerangs are located on the main body. Armaments on the backpack include various machine guns and a pair of beam cannons for use in HiMAT (High Mobility Aerial Tactics) mode. In addition to these armaments, the Justice Gundam is capable of using something far more powerful: the METEOR support system. This mobile weapons platform is designed specifically for use by the Justice Gundam and ZGMFX10A Freedom Gundam and is stored aboard the support ship Eternal. By using the METEOR, the Justice Gundam can deliver a blitzkrieg attack utilizing various cannons, missile launchers and with two long beam swords.

The Justice Gundam is deployed in May C.E. 71 by Athrun Zala under orders from his father Patrick to locate or destroy the stolen Freedom Gundam. However, after locating the Freedom Gundam, Athrun decides to switch sides and join his old friend and former enemy Kira Yamato. Athrun joins the battle against the Alliance at Orb, and after the collapse of the neutral nation he goes into space with the Archangel and the Orb ship Kusanagi. There, Athrun is joined by Lacus

Clyne and her supporters, who steal the support ship Eternal and its two METEOR units. With the powerful METEOR support system, Athrun is able to prevent the PLANTs from being destroyed by nuclear missiles and also destroy the GAT-X131 Calamity Gundam. At the war's end, Athrun self-detonates the Justice Gundam within the massive laser cannon GENESIS to destroy it, but he is rescued by Cagalli Yula Athha's MBF-02+AQM/E-X01 Aile Strike Rouge. Three years later, Athrun pilots the upgraded successor ZGMF-X19A Justice Gundam during the Second Bloody Valentine War.

Technical and Historical Notes

Despite the theft of four prototype Gundams by ZAFT, the Earth Alliance continues its research and constructs new units featuring advanced technologies. One such unit is the GAT-X131 Calamity Gundam, which is designed as a long-range artillery unit similar to the stolen GATX103 Buster Gundam. One of the new technologies implemented in the Calamity Gundam is Trans-Phase armor, which is an improved version of Phase Shift armor. Whereas Phase Shift armor utilizes a "power up" mode denoted by color and a "power down" mode denoted by gray, Trans-Phase armor is designed to only activate at the point of impact and thus preserve energy. This energy can then be used for power-consuming energy weapons. Also, to keep up with the abilities of Coordinators, pilot Orga Sabnak is an "Extended" who has been subjected to brainwashing and the use of performance enhancing drugs. Unfortunately, these drugs have severe side effects after wearing off.

As an artillery unit, the Calamity Gundam features a variety of weapons. Its main weapon is the twin "Schlag" 125mm beam cannons mounted on the backpack. Other armaments include a "Scylla" beam cannon in the chest, which is identical to the one used by the GAT-X303 Aegis Gundam. The Calamity Gundam also uses a handheld "Todesblock" plasma bazooka, and its shield is equipped with a "Kaefer Zwei" ram cannon. Since the Calamity Gundam is designed for long range combat, it doesn't come equipped with any close range melee weapons. However, the Alliance does develop a close combat variant, the GAT-X133 Sword Calamity. The Calamity

Gundam is first deployed in combat during the Earth Alliance's attack on the Orb Union. Following the defeat of Orb, the Calamity Gundam is taken to space and transferred to the battleship Dominion under the supervision of Blue Cosmos leader Muruta Azrael. The Calamity Gundam is destroyed near the war's end on September 26, C.E. 71, by Athrun Zala's ZGMFX09A Justice Gundam.

Model number: GAT-X252 Code name: Forbidden Gundam Unit type: prototype close combat mobile suit Manufacturer: Earth Alliance Operator: Earth Alliance First deployment: 15 June C.E. 71 Accommodation: pilot only, in standard cockpit in torso Dimensions: head height 17.47 meters Weight: max gross weight 85.33 metric tons Armor materials: unknown Powerplant: ultracompact energy battery, power output rating unknown Propulsion: unknown Equipment and design features: sensors, range unknown; Trans-Phase (TP) armor; "Geschmeidig Panzer" energy deflection armor Fixed armaments: 2 x "Igelstellung" 75mm multi-barrel CIWS, fire-linked, mounted in head; 2 x "Armfeuer'" 115mm machine gun, mounted on forearms; 2 x "Eckzahn" 88mm railgun, mounted on backpack, operable only in close combat mode; "Hresvelgr" plasma induction

cannon, mounted on backpack, operable only in close combat mode Optional hand armaments: "Nidhoggr" heavy scythe

Technical and Historical Notes

Despite the theft of four prototype Gundams by ZAFT, the Earth Alliance continues its research and constructs new units featuring advanced technologies. One such unit is the GAT-X252 Forbidden Gundam, which is designed as a close combat attack unit. One of the new technologies implemented in the Forbidden Gundam is Trans-Phase armor, which is an improved version of Phase Shift armor. Whereas Phase Shift armor utilizes a "power up" mode denoted by color and a 'power down' mode denoted by gray, Trans-Phase armor is designed to only activate at the point of impact and thus preserve energy. This energy can then be used for powerconsuming energy weapons. Also, to keep up with the abilities of Coordinators, pilot Shani Andras is an "Extended" who has been subjected to brainwashing and the use of performance enhancing drugs. Unfortunately, these drugs have severe side effects after wearing off.

As a close combat suit, the Forbidden Gundam is equipped with various beam and melee weaponry. Most notably, its large backpack can be fitted over its head for a high mobility close combat mode. In this close combat mode, it is capable of firing arcing beams from its "Hresvelgr" plasma cannon or standard shots from its twin "Eckzahn" railguns. The close combat mode also features the "Geschmeidig Panzer" armor system, which can deflect and redirect beams. The system uses a colloid gas filled with beam-deflecting particles, which are held in place by the magnetic charge generated by the shields. Other armaments include standard "Igelstellung" head vulcans and an "Armfeuer" machine gun. For melee combat, the Forbidden Gundam is equipped with a "Nidhoggr" heavy scythe for use outside of close combat mode. The Forbidden Gundam's design is later seen again with the underwater variant GAT-X255 Forbidden Blue and its mass production counterpart, the GAT-706S Deep Forbidden. The Forbidden Gundam is first deployed in combat during the Earth Alliance's attack on the Orb Union. In Shani's reckless hands, the Forbidden Gundam proves to be a challenging foe, even for Kira Yamato's ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam. Following the defeat of Orb, the Forbidden Gundam is taken to space and transferred to the battleship Dominion under the supervision of Blue Cosmos leader Muruta Azrael. The Forbidden Gundam is destroyed near the war's end on September 26, C.E. 71, by Yzak Joule's GAT-X102 Duel Gundam.

Model number: GAT-X370 Code name: Raider Gundam Unit type: prototype attack use transformable mobile suit Manufacturer: Earth Alliance Operator: Earth Alliance First deployment: 15 June C.E. 71 Accommodation: pilot only, in standard cockpit in torso Dimensions: head height 17.94 meters Weight: max gross weight 84.9 metric tons Armor materials: unknown Powerplant: ultracompact energy battery, power output rating unknown Propulsion: unknown Equipment and design features: sensors, range unknown; Trans-Phase (TP) armor Fixed armaments: "Zorn" 100mm energy cannon, fire-linked, mounted on mouth; dual 52mm hyper velocity shield cannon, mounted on right forearm; 2 x "Ahura Mazda" short-range energy cannon, mounted on claws, operable only in flight mode; M417 80mm machine gun, mounted in nose, operable only in flight mode; 2 x M2M3 76mm machine gun, mounted on shoulders, operable only in flight mode Optional hand armaments: "Mjolnir" hammer

Technical and Historical Notes

Despite the theft of four prototype Gundams by ZAFT, the Earth Alliance continues its research and constructs new units featuring advanced technologies. One such unit is the GAT-X370 Raider Gundam, which is designed as a transforming mobile suit similar to the GAT-X303 Aegis Gundam. One of the new technologies implemented in the Raider Gundam is Trans-Phase armor, which is an improved version of Phase Shift armor. Whereas Phase Shift armor utilizes a "power up" mode denoted by color and a "power down" mode denoted by gray, Trans-Phase armor is designed to only activate at the point of impact and thus preserve energy. This energy can then be diverted to power-consuming energy weapons. Also, to keep up with the abilities of Coordinators, pilot Clotho Buer is an "Extended" who has been subjected to brainwashing and the use of performance enhancing drugs. Unfortunately, these drugs have severe side effects after wearing off.

Like the Aegis Gundam, the Raider Gundam is equipped with weapons that are operable in its variable configurations. In mobile suit mode, the Raider Gundam features a twin machine gun mounted on its right arm. It also features a "Zorn" energy cannon in place of a mouth, which is operable in either configuration. For close combat, the Raider Gundam is also equipped with a "Mjolnir" hammer. While in flight mode, the Raider Gundam can utilize the "Ahura Mazda" cannons located on the claws, as well as several machine guns mounted on the nose and shoulders. The armaments featured in the Raider Gundam are a variation on the original design, the GAT-333 Raider Full Spec. The Raider Gundam is first deployed in combat during the Earth Alliance's attack on the Orb Union. While on Earth, the Raider Gundam also serves as a subflight unit for the GAT-X131 Calamity Gundam. Following the defeat of Orb, the Raider Gundam is taken to space and transferred to the battleship Dominion under the supervision of Blue Cosmos leader Muruta Azrael. The Raider Gundam is destroyed near the war's end on September 26, C.E. 71, by Yzak Joule's GAT-X102 Duel Gundam.

Technical and Historical Notes

With the outbreak of the Bloody Valentine War, the Earth Alliance's Atlantic Federation begins a secret project to develop mobile suits to counter ZAFT's mass-produced ZGMF-1017 GINN as well as operate free of interference from the N-Jammers. The GAT-X105 Strike Gundam is one of five initial prototype suits secretly developed in conjunction with Orb's Morgenroete defense company. Whereas the other Gundams are designed for specific roles, the Strike Gundam is intended to operate in various configurations through the use of Striker packs. Like the other prototype Gundams, the Strike Gundam is equipped with the new Phase Shift (PS) armor technology. When in Phase Shift mode, the Strike Gundam is nearly impervious to attacks from shell-firing artillery or melee weapons. However, use of Phase Shift for extended periods of time is a massive drain on the energy battery. The basic version of the Strike Gundam is nearly identical to the GAT-X102 Duel Gundam's initial configuration. Its armament consists of two "Igelstellung" vulcan guns, a 57mm beam rifle, a shield and two "Armor Schneider" combat knives. Other optional armaments include a bazooka designed for underwater combat. In addition to the first unit, Orb later constructs an improved version from spare parts, the MBF-02 Strike Rouge. The Alliance also constructs a third unit, which is later upgraded into the GATX105E Strike Gundam E. The Strike Gundam is later followed by the mass production GAT-01 Strike Dagger and GAT-01A1 Dagger.

The first Strike Gundam enters combat in January 25, C.E. 71, when ZAFT attacks Orb's space colony Heliopolis in an attempt to steal the Gundam prototypes. Although ZAFT succeeds in capturing four units, the Strike Gundam remains in Alliance control and is initially (and ineffectively) used by Murrue Ramius. However, young Coordinator Kira Yamato is able to modify the incomplete operating system and make the Strike Gundam combat ready. Following the destruction of Heliopolis, Kira becomes the Strike Gundam's default pilot and joins the crew of the Archangel. While heading for the Alliance's Alaskan headquarters, the Strike Gundam is severely damaged in battle on April 17 by Athrun Zala's self-destructing GAT-X303 Aegis Gundam. The Strike Gundam is later repaired by Orb and passed on to ace pilot Mu La Flaga, while Kira upgrades to ZAFT's stolen ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam. The Strike Gundam serves as Mu's personal mobile suit after the Archangel defects from the Alliance and joins the Orb forces and Clyne faction to form the Three Ships Alliance. At the war's end on September 27, the Strike Gundam is damaged in a duel with Rau Le Creuset's ZGMF-X13A Providence Gundam and later destroyed while Mu is protecting the Archangel from an attack by the Alliance battleship Dominion. Two years after the war, the versatile design of the Strike Gundam serves as the basis for ZAFT's ZGMF-X56S Impulse
