Form 2 : Chapter 11 Transformations

Identify a Translation
All points move same distance and in the same direction. Translation

Identify a Translation
Translation is described (a) by stating the direction using horizontal (left or right) movement followed by vertical (up or down) movement, (b) in the form a , where a represents horizontal b movement and b represents vertical movement.

Identify a Translation
The values of a and b can be positive or negative according to the direction of movement.

y 6 5 4 3 2 1 O

The image coordinates of the point K(1,4) under the translation 2 is 3

Translation
K

2 means 3

move the object 2 units to the right and 3 units downward.

x

y 6 5 4 3 2 1 O

The image coordinates of the point K(1,4) under the translation 2 is 3

Move 2 units to the right

Move 3 units down

K

move the object 2 units to the right and 3 units downward.

Describe the translation that maps object R to image R. Step 1: Choose a vertex on figure R.

Step 2: Move 3 units to the right and 4 units down to reach the corresponding point in figure R.

Describe the translation that maps object R to image R.

Every point of an object and the corresponding points of its image have the same perpendicular distance to the axis of reflection.

Find the coordinates of the image of point P under a reflection in the x-axis.
y 3 2 1 4 2 O 1 2 2 P

axis of reflection
x 4

Find the coordinates of the image of point P under a reflection in the x-axis.
y 3 2 1 4 2 O 1 2 P

P is 2 units above x-axis.

x

2 P

So, P is 2 units below x-axis. Therefore P is (4, 2).

Find the coordinates of the image of point P under a reflection in the y-axis.

2 4

P is 4 units to the right of y-axis.

x

So, P is 4 units to the left of y-axis. Therefore P is ( 4, 2).

Find the axis of reflection for the given object and its image.

Step 2: Construct a perpendicular bisector to the line AA. Label it PQ. (find midpoint and use 90o )
