Social 10-1 Unit 4 Lesson 5 Part 1: Final Exam Essay

Examine the three sources. Write a response in paragraph form in which you:
interpret each source, explain the ideological perspective(s) presented, and discuss the links between the principles of globalization and each source AND identify and explain one or more of the relationships that exist among the sources

Speaker 1: Economic globalization is a double edged sword. If we can take advantage of its benefits and avoid its negative aspects, our enterprises can develop in a healthy environment.

Speaker 2: Globalization refers to the process of reducing barriers between countries and encouraging closer economic, political, and social interaction. Globalization could vastly increase the ability of people everywhere to improve their standard of living by sharing knowledge and the fruits of human labour across those barriers. This, of course, does not happen.

How to complete this type of essay assignment: Follow these steps: Step 1: Brainstorming/Outlining
1. You need to get some ideas down on paper in response to the questions. Do this in an orderly manner. a. Interpret each source in other words, consider or IDENTIFY what each source means or is referring to and take jot notes about it, and for each source based on your interpretation explain/IDENTIFY what the ideological perspective(s) is that is presentedin other words what concepts/ideas from the course material does this source refer to? Go back through your text book and notes and identify concepts relevant to each source. 2. Next, in this essay assignment you will be asked to discuss the links between the principles of GLOBALIZATION and each source. In other words, how does the source relate to the concept or topic of globalization? 3. IDENTIFY a relationship or relationships that exist between the sources. You may want to discuss only one and do a thorough job, or you may present more than one. However, by presenting a thorough discussion of one relationship you may impress the marker with your intimate knowledge of that relationship.

These first 3 steps should be in point form (jot notes).

Step 2: Write the essay!!


1. Writing the essay!! Once you have your ideas about what you are going to say, you should write a brief introduction in which you explain/identify what ideological perspectives you will discuss in relation to globalization, and what relationship(s) you will discuss. This will help the marker to understand what ideas and information you will present in your response, and add unity to your essay. REMEMBER, this is a Social essay, so use a formal tone of voice and write in 3 rd person, and use SPECIFIC VOCABULARY from the course!! 2. Once you have written your introduction, you need to develop body paragraphs that: a. interpret each source, explain the ideological perspective(s) presented, and discuss the links between the principles of globalization and each source you should have one paragraph per source! b. identify and explain one or more of the relationships that exist among the sources you should have 1 2 paragraphs for this. 3. Write a brief concluding statement that sums up your essay which is included in your paragraph about the relationship. 4. Edit your writing.

Essay format: Please complete your essay in paragraph form in MS Word. It must be a minimum of 600 words (maximum 800). Please make sure you follow the essay format. Once you have completed your essay please post it in the submissions folder as a Word document.

Grading: Your Essay will be graded using the rubric below.

SOCIAL STUDIES 10-1 SOURCE ANALYSIS ESSAY RUBRIC This is the criteria that the Alberta Government has established to evaluate the written section of the diploma exam. This same criteria will be used this to mark your essays in this course.

1. INTERPRETATION of sources: (10 marks) Markers consider:


When marking Interpretation of Sources, markers should consider how effectively the student interprets and explains each source to identify an ideological perspective(s) discusses the links between principles of globalization and each source

10 Excellent: Interpretation and explanation of the source is sophisticated, insightful, and precise. The links to
the principles of globalization are accurate, perceptive, and comprehensively developed.

8 Proficient: Interpretation and explanation of the source is sound, specific, and adept. The discussion of the links
to the principles of globalization is capably developed, consistent, and logical.

6 Satisfactory: Interpretation and explanation of the source is adequate, straightforward, and conventional. The
discussion of the links to the principles of globalization is developed in a generalized fashion and relevant.

4 Limited: Interpretation and explanation of the source is confused, vague, and simplistic. The discussion of the
links to the principles of globalization may be incomplete, superficial, and imprecise.

2 Poor: Interpretation and explanation of the source is minimal, inaccurate, and simply copied from the
source. The links to the principles of globalization are disjointed, irrelevant, and demonstrate little or no understanding of the assigned task.

Z: Zero Zero is assigned to a response that fails to meet the minimum requirements of the Poor category. A zero may be assigned in one or more categories.

2. IDENTIFICATION OF RELATIONSHIPS: (5 marks) Markers consider:


When marking Identification of Relationships, the markers should consider how effectively the student identifies the relationship(s) that exist among the sources explains the relationship(s) that exist among the sources

5 Excellent- Relationship(s) are accurately and perceptively identified. The explanation is thorough and
comprehensive.

4 Proficient- Relationship(s) are clearly and capably identified. The explanation is appropriate and purposeful 3 Satisfactory- Relationship(s) are generally and adequately identified. The explanation is straightforward and
conventional.

2 Limited- The identification of relationship(s) is superficial, illogical, and of questionable accuracy. The
explanation is confusing, incomplete, and redundant.

1 Poor- The identification of relationship(s) is minimal. The explanation is tangential and scant.

Z: Zero Zero is assigned to a response that fails to meet the minimum requirements of the Poor category. A zero may be assigned in one or more categories.

3. QUALITY OF COMMUNICATION: (5 Marks) Markers consider:


When marking Quality of Communication, the markers should consider how effectively the student communicates, including control of vocabulary sentence structure and organization mechanics and grammar

5 Excellent- Vocabulary is precise and deliberately chosen. Sentence structure is controlled and sophisticated;
ideas are judiciously organized. The writing demonstrates skillful control of mechanics and grammar and is judiciously organized.

4 Proficient- Vocabulary is appropriate and specific. Sentence structure is controlled and effective. The writing
demonstrates capable control of mechanics and grammar and is purposefully organized.

3 Satisfactory- Vocabulary is conventional and generalized. Sentence structure is controlled and straightforward;
ideas are adequately organized. The writing demonstrates basic control of mechanics and grammar.

2 Limited- Vocabulary is imprecise, simplistic, and/or inappropriate. Sentence structure is awkward; ideas are
organized ineffectively. The writing demonstrates a faltering control of mechanics and grammar.

1 Poor- Vocabulary is overgeneralized and/or inaccurate. Sentence structure is uncontrolled; organization of ideas
is haphazard and/or lacking. The writing demonstrates a profound lack of control of mechanics and grammar.

Z: Zero Zero is assigned to a response that fails to meet the minimum requirements of the Poor category. A zero may be assigned in one or more categories.
