Last Friday the Church marked the Feast of the

ConversaonofStPaul.Weallknowthestoryofthat
fateful trip along the road to Damascus, and the
resultsofthatdirectandpersonalintervenonbythe
Lord in Pauls life. We hear the fruits of that event
mostSundaysinoursecondreadingsasStPaulspeaks
to us from across the years. We truly are the
beneciariesofPaulsjourneytoDamascus.

Inreecngonthenatureofconversionhoweveritis
cleartomethatnotverymanypeoplehavethatsame
kind of gracelled occurrence. For the most part,
conversion is a slow, neverendingand at mes
painfulprocess. It is a process that embraces the
death and resurrecon that is at the heart of the
Chrisan life in all maer of things as we seek to be
evermorefaithfultoChrist.

Of course, the task of conversion is not something

that we can undertake by ourselves: we are totally
reliant on Gods grace to draw us into the journey of
conversion, to sustain us day by day along that
journey, and to welcome us when that journey is
complete and we are with God for eternity. Yet I am
constantly surprised by how oen people (and I
include myself in this) think that we need to work at
ourconversionrstbeforeGodwillloveus.

Nothing could be further from the truth. We are

completely helpless to walk that journey without rst
surrendering to God, and opening ourselves to his
presenceandaconinourlives.Ourrst,secondand
last step along the journey of conversion is enrely
Godslovinggiofgracetous.

Itisanincrediblegitousandwewoulddowellto
constantly give thanks for that gi, and embrace its
presenceinourlives.

Despitecommonopiniontothecontrary,symbolsare
neither nostalgic remembrances of the past nor
familiar reminders of things we already know.
Symbols are not things people invent and interpret,
butrealiesthatmakeandinterpretapeople.What
weneedtodayisnotsomuchbeersymbols,buta
willingness to let ourselves be grasped and explored
by them. For a symbol is not an object to be
manipulated through mime and memory, but an
environment to be inhabited. Symbols are places to
live, breathing spaces that help us discover what
possibilieslifeoers.

To put the maer succinctly: every symbol deals with

a new discovery and every symbol is an openended
acon, not a closedo object. By engaging in
symbols, by inhabing their environment, people
discover new horizons for life, new values and
movaons.Because they are openended acons
symbols can expand, grow and deepen. To think of
symbols as changeless reminders of irreformable
truthsisnonsense.

Symbols are supple, exible, pliant. Their relaon to

people is reciprocal: Symbols disclose new potenals
for human life, but they are also shaped and rened
by the changing circumstances of that life. We might
call this the principle of symbolic reciprocity:
symbolsbothinuenceandareinuencedbythevery
