4 The FundamentaIs of HandIing
SWITCHBLAOE |s a tube amp and, as such, works ||ke as a tube amp.
Neverthe|ess, the hand||ng concept |s rather advanced, so t|me spent
tam|||ar|z|ng yourse|t w|th |t |s t|me we|| spent.
At t|rst g|ance, the knobs |ook and tee| ||ke standard-|ssue gear:
Contro| range 300 degrees, 0-10 c|ockw|se, |ett and r|ght stops.
At second g|ance, though, you'|| d|scover that there |s just a s|ng|e set
ot knobs to serve a|| tour Channe|s. One GAIN, one Channe| NASTER,
one three-band fQ that's |t. Jhe se|ected Channe| determ|nes |t the
GAIN knob addresses the CLEAN, CRUNCH or LEAO Channe|.
Jhe great advantage ot th|s concept |s that Channe|s are |ndependent
and do not share the Ga|n, Master or vo|c|ng knobs, even Presence
|s separate|y adjustab|e tor every Channe| and every sett|ng can be
programmed |nd|v|dua||y to each ot the 128 Presets!
Apart trom the VOLUNE NASTER knob (and ot course NAINS and
STANOBY), th|s app||es to a|| ot SWITCHBLAOE's contro| teatures, that |s:
s the Channe|s: CLEAN, CRUNCH, LEAO, ULTRA
s the Channe| sett|ngs: GAIN+BOOST, BASS, NIO, TREBLE,
PRESENCE, NASTER
s the ettect parameters: NOO FX, TINE, FEEOBACK, VOLUNE, REVERB
s the ettect rout|ng opt|ons tor externa| dev|ces: FX ON/OFF, SERIAL/PARALLEL
You won't t|nd any contro| teatures tor manag|ng the 128 Presets
on Sw|tchb|ade. Jhe |nc|uded lSM 432 MlDl board or another MlDl-
enab|ed contro||er serves to se|ect Presets and ass|gn memory s|ots.
More on th|s |n chapter o.
Mote: A knob settng programmed n a Preset and the knob's actua|
settng are not necessar|y the same. They are ndependent: When you
swtch from one Preset to another, the knob's actua| poston may not
ref|ect the settng programmed n the Preset. Ths means you may
we|| hear somethng other than what you're seeng wou|d suggest. As
soon as you touch the knob, t w|| respond |ke any other conventona|
knob. The ORIGINAL VALUE LEO n the NASTER secton te||s you
the Preset settng. It |ghts up as soon as the poston of the knob
corresponds to the Preset settng. Nore on ths n chapter 4.B.
Mote: You may hear a soft background sound when you twst the
knobs. Ths s a swtchng nose made the programmab|e resstor
matrx |ocated behnd each knob.
E The BWTCHBLADE's ChanneIs
SWITCHBLAOE otters tour Channe|s w|th marked|y d|tterent son|c
characters. Courtesy ot SWITCHBLAOE's programmab|||ty, you enjoy
more and more powertu| sound-shap|ng opt|ons: Jhe knobs are not
hardw|red to the |nterna| c|rcu|ts, so we were ab|e to tweak the|r
contro| ranges and pertormance to make the most ot each Channe|'s
character|st|c sound.
A ch|ckenhead knob |s s|ted at the tar r|ght ot the CHANNEL sect|on
that's the Channe| Se|ector. Use |t to sw|tch among the tour Channe|s
a|ong w|th the|r GAIN, BASS, NIO, TREBLE, PRESENCE and NASTER
sett|ngs.
Mote: When you frst power up your amp and change Channe|s, you w||
da| up factory settngs [see chapter B.B.E to |earn more]. As soon as you
begn da|ng n sounds to your taste, t w|| adopt your Channe|s settngs.
And t reca||s your most recent|y confgured sound for each Channe|. You'||
fnd ths to be a tremendous he|p when programmng. Nore on ths n

t|ne-tuned compress|on, th|s Channe| de||vers the |ubr|cant that makes
those s||ck r|tts and ||cks t|y ott your t|ngert|ps.
E.A ULTRA ChanneI
Amer|can h|gh-Ga|n sound w|th sumo-s|zed |ow end and snar||ng top
end. Jhe ULTRA Channe| de||vers the k|nd ot merc||ess pertormance
that |s sure to de||ght nu meta| me|sters and dropped tun|ng

super-s|ze the|r sound w|th a h|gh-ca|or|e topp|ng ot r|ch tone.
E.B GAM
Jhe GAIN knob determ|nes lnput sens|t|v|ty and thus the Leve| ot
saturat|on and d|stort|on. SWITCHBLAOE's GAIN otters a spec|a|
teature: |ust betore the knob arr|ves at the tar r|ght pos|t|on, a BOOST
stage k|cks |n (and the red LfD ||ghts up). Now, when you see 8oost
on other amps, th|s usua||y means a|| trequenc|es are boosted. 8ut
Sw|tchb|ade's 8oost amp||t|es se|ected trequency ranges tor each
Channe| to atta|n cream|er tone.
E.B BABB, ND, TREBLE
Jhe vo|c|ng sect|on |s tweaked to accomp||sh the best, most ett|c|ent
sound-shap|ng tor each Channe|. Gett|ng r|ght to the heart ot the son|c
matter, every knob addresses each Channe|'s character|st|c trequency
ranges. L|ke on every tube amp, the knobs ot a Channe| |nt|uence each
other. Jhat |s, |t you boost the Jreb|e, the m|drange |s cut and v|ce
versa. Jh|s puts a much greater range ot subt|e tona| var|at|ons at your
t|ngert|ps.
E.? PREBEMCE
Jh|s knob determ|nes the overtone content. Un||ke a TREBLE knob,
wh|ch boosts whatever h|gh trequenc|es are ava||ab|e, PRESENCE
actua||y determ|nes the amount ot harmon|c overtones generated by
the amp. Usua||y a PRESENCE knob contro|s the overtone content
ot the overa|| amp rather than ot |nd|v|dua| Channe|s. Courtesy ot
SWITCHBLAOE's programmab|||ty, you can det|ne PRESENCE sett|ngs
not on|y tor each Channe|, but a|so tor each Preset.
E.B NABTER
Use the Channe| NASTER knob to adjust the g|ven Channe|'s vo|ume
and ba|ance |t out w|th the other Channe|s' Leve|s. On Sw|tchb|ade th|s
knob serves another v|ta| purpose: lt |ets you store the same sound
at d|tterent vo|umes to any ot the 128 Presets, tor examp|e, a sotter
vers|on tor rhythm and a |ouder sett|ng tor Leads.
Mote: The Channe| NASTER s a dfferent breed of knob. It adjusts the
Channe|s' re|atve |eve|s, and s tweaked to he|p you quck|y da| n the
best ba|ance. Un|ke a conventona| Naster knob, t can't be turned
a|| they way Oown; t mere|y boosts or cuts the gven Leve|. Ths
desgn makes musca| and practca| sense: The C|ean Channe| norma||y
requres a much hgher Naster Leve| than a dstorted Channe|, whch
s why t s about as |oud as the other Channe|s when the knob s set
to the center poston. That's why the E o'c|ock poston s a|ways the
best startng pont for adjustng Vo|ume.
B DigitaI Effects
SWITCHBLAOE otters three |ndependent d|g|ta| ettect sect|ons that can
be used s|mu|taneous|y. L|ke Channe| sett|ngs, a|| ettect sett|ngs are
programmab|e.

B.4 REVERB
SWITCHBLAOE's keverb |s mode|ed to match the warmth and mus|ca||ty
ot c|ass|c spr|ng keverbs. A genu|ne |mprovement over |ts ana|og
torebears, |t automat|ca||y adjusts the keverb ta|| to su|t the sett|ng: Jhe
more REVERB you add to the s|gna|, the |onger the REVERB t|me.
B.E DELAY
Jhe De|ay sect|on's VOLUNE, TINE and FEEOBACK knobs attord you
tota| contro| over a|| parameters. Jh|s |ets you d|a| |n everyth|ng trom
rockab|||y sty|e s|ap-back echo to U2-|nsp|red De|ay extravaganzas and
Queen-||ke bombast.
B.E.4 VOLUNE

B.B NOD FX
Jhe three most |mportant modu|at|on ettects are CHORUS, FLANGER
and TRENOLO, and they're a|| on board, read||y act|vated v|a a s|ng|e
knob. CHORUS |s act|ve |n the t|rst th|rd, FLANGER |n the second th|rd,
and TRENOLO |n the t|na| th|rd ot the contro| range. You can shape the
ettect w|th|n |ts ass|gned th|rd ot the contro| range us|ng th|s knob. Jhe
parameters were tweaked to make mus|ca| sense: A tw|st ot the knob

B.B.4 CHORUB
At s|ow sett|ngs, the CHORUS sounds th|ck and |ush, prov|d|ng a great

A.4 VOLUNE
As the name wou|d |nd|cate, th|s knob puts the power amp at your
thumb and toret|nger's command. fxerc|se restra|nt when hand||ng
th|s knob to make mus|c a p|easant rather than a pa|ntu| exper|ence.
HandIing: Un|ke the Channe| and effect knobs, the NASTER VOLUNE
knob s not programmab|eI It works |ke any standard knob, and the
poston of the knob ndcates the actua| settng.
Caution: Hgh vo|ume |eve|s can cause hearng damage. Spare yourse|f

dev|ces. You can connect any externa| MlDl-enab|ed s|gna| processor
or any MlDl rece|ver that you w|sh to sw|tch synchronous|y w|th
SWITCHBLAOE.
B.B BPEAKERB
SWITCHBLAOE otters separate outputs tor a|| standard |mpedances:
You have 1 x 4-ohm, 1 x 8/2 x 1o-ohm, and 1 x 1o-ohm outputs at
your d|sposa|. A|ways ensure the |mpedance (that |s, the ohm va|ue) |s
correct. M|smatches can corrupt the sound (h|gh-|mpedance speaker
connected to a |ow-|mpedance output) and harm the amp (|ow-
|mpedance speaker connected to a h|gh-|mpedance output).
Mote: You may of course connect severa| cabnets to one port, even
f they have dfferent mpedances. Usua||y speaker cabnets are
connected n Para||e|. Two cabnets of the same mpedance connected
n Para||e| have ha|f the mpedance of a sng|e cabnet. For examp|e, f
you have two B-ohm cabnets, you must connect these to the 4-ohm
output. If you connect two cabnets wth dfferent mpedances [R, RE]
n para||e|, the resu|tng resstance [R] s ca|cu|ated by mu|tp|yng the
two ndvdua| resstances and dvdng ther product by the sum of the
ndvdua| resstances. Use the fo||owng formu|a to do ths:
R = ( R4 x RE ] / ( R4 + RE ]
Take as an examp|e a one B-ohm and one B-ohm cabnet:
R = ( B x 4B ] / ( B + 4B ]
R = 4EB / EA
R = B.BB
Jhe cab|nets' |mpedance may never be |ower than the amp's output
|mpedance, so th|s comb|nat|on must be connected to the 4-ohm
output. However, we strong|y adv|sed aga|nst cont|gur|ng setups w|th
m|smatched cab|nets, and h|gh|y recommend us|ng comb|nat|ons ot
cab|nets w|th the same |mpedance!

? RepIacing Tubes, Bervice
and Preventive Naintenance
SWITCHBLAOE |s tactory-|oaded w|th fL34 and 12AX7 tubes. Once
they've been burned |n that |s, operated cont|nuous|y under a |oad they
are subjected to a r|gorous se|ect|on process. Jhe|r e|ectr|ca| specs and
mechan|ca| status (m|crophon|cs) are checked, and then they are |nsta||ed
|n an amp and the|r son|c pertormance |s aud|t|oned. One ot the most
|mportant steps |n th|s process |s tube match|ng, whereby tubes w|th the
same character|st|cs are teamed up |n matched sets ot power tubes.
When to RepIace Tubes
Jhe tubes |n SWITCHBLAOE are exemp|ary |n terms ot qua||ty,
workman-sh|p and |ong serv|ce ||te. Nonethe|ess, tubes show det|n|te
s|gns ot wear when the|r serv|ce ||te |s near|ng |ts end. Je||ta|e s|gns are
|ncreased m|crophon|cs, no|se and h|ss, mudd|er tone through |oss ot
h|gh-end trequenc|es, degraded pertormance, etc. Jake these |nd|cat|ons
ser|ous|y and rep|ace o|d tubes. Not on|y do these s|de ettects take the|r
to|| on sound qua||ty, they a|so |nd|cate the ag|ng tube w||| soon ta||!
BwitchbIade
EE
Mote: Rep|acng tubes for expermentaton purposes s not
recommended. Insta||ng the wrong tubes w|| damage the amp and
cost you a |ot more than you barganed for n repar costs.
8etore you start swapp|ng tubes, ask yourse|t these quest|ons:
s Was the tau|t or ta||ure ot the tube caused by the tube |tse|t or by a
t|awed per|phera| dev|ce or component, perhaps a detect|ve speaker
cab|e? lt you don't get to the bottom ot the prob|em and remedy |t,
|t may crop up aga|n even atter you rep|ace the tubes.
s D|d the Ma|ns vo|tage t|uctuate or sp|ke wh||e the amp was on? ln
a||-tube amps, over-vo|tage surges |n the Ma|ns net can certa|n|y
cause drop-outs. Over-vo|tages are otten caused by generators and
tau|ty h|gh-current power c|rcu|ts.
s Perhaps a tuse b|ew even though none ot the tubes |s actua||y
detect|ve? An o|d tuse, tube de-|on|zat|on or Ma|ns vo|tage power
surges may have tr|ggered the tuse.
Things to Bear in Nind When RepIacing Tubes
kep|ac|ng tubes |s a job best |ett to qua||t|ed protess|ona|s!
Accord|ng|y, the to||ow|ng gu|de||nes are addressed and app|y to

s Pu|| Sw|tchb|ade's Ma|ns p|ug and a||ow tor a d|scharge t|me ot at |east
two m|nutes betore remov|ng the chass|s trom the rear ot the amp.
s Once the chass|s has been removed, caretu||y ease the tubes out ot
the|r sockets.
s A s|ng|e power tube may on|y be rep|aced |t the rep|acement tube
prec|se|y matches the or|g|na|, that |s, the o|d and new tubes'
character|st|cs are |dent|ca|.
s When a new matched set ot power tubes w|th character|st|cs
|dent|ca| to the o|d set |s |nsta||ed, |t |s not abso|ute|y necessary to
re-b|as the amp.
s Jhe amp must be b|ased when a rep|acements set's character|st|cs do
not match the or|g|na| set's. Jh|s requ|res exper|ence and extens|ve
work|ng know|edge |n measur|ng techn|ques, wh|ch |s why th|s |s a
job tor qua||t|ed techn|c|ans w|th tube amp tun|ng exper|ence.
How to ProIong Tube Life
