CANYON VIEWS
A+ SCHOOL DRIVEN BY CHILDRENS NEEDS
Principals Message:
Dear Canyon View Families, I hope that you all had a nice extended weekend and that the New Year has started on a positive note for you and your family. On Thursday of this week, the 2nd annual CFSD Spelling Bee was held at Esperero Canyon Middle School and our very own Naina B. (4th grade) received 3rd place honors. This event is quickly gaining speed throughout the district, and everyone involved is already looking forward to next years competition and the amazing spellers that will participate. Congratulations Naina! Our rst Kindergarten Show & Tell is this Monday, January 28 at 2:00 p.m. in the library. If you, or anyone you know who has an incoming kindergartener, are interested in meeting the teachers and learning more about the Kindergarten and Kindergarten Plus programs, be sure to join us this Monday. If you cannot make next Mondays event, our second Kindergarten Show & Tell will be held on February 11 at 2:00 p.m. Please call the front office at 209-7701 to schedule your appointment! On Friday, February 1 the 5th grade team will be hosting their Parents Night Out fundraiser to help support their trip to Disneyland. If you are looking for an evening where you can drop the kids off at school and spend some quality time with your signicant other, then be sure to contact the front office for details. Additionally, on February 5 at 8:30 a.m. Canyon View will be hosting our second open house for prospective Open Enrollment families. If you know of any families who are interested in exploring what Canyon View has to offer their children, please pass this important information along to them. Open Enrollment applications are available online at www.cfsd16.org. As a reminder, current Open Enrollment families must reapply each year between December 1 and the end of February. Finally, our school-wide Read-a-Thon is in high gear and students are already talking about the progress they have made. This school-wide event promotes and strengthens students love for reading. The funds collected during our Read-a-Thon help our FFO fund teacher grants, provide classroom improvements, and support special student activities. We appreciate your support of our young readers and our school. Keep reading!!! Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,
Rob Henikman Principal

Character Counts Bracelet Campaign The Character Counts Bracelet Campaign was a huge success! We sampled a few teachers and students to nd out what they liked about the idea. Questions (Designed by students) Why do you think character is important? What do you think are some successes of the bracelets ? What do you like about nding character and passing the bracelets on to other people of good character? What was your favorite part of the Character Counts Bracelet Campaign? Do you think we could have added anything to our Character Counts Campaign? (If so, what?) Do you think we should do the bracelets next year? (If so, why?) Do you like using bracelets to represent the Pillars of Character? Answers (A sampling from the grade levels) Ms. H. (4th grade teacher): Character is what other people remember about you and so for individuals your character is important. When all people have good character, its like in a machine it makes the parts stronger. The bracelets were great because students were recognizing character and being recognized makes you feel good. My favorite part was seeing students recognize each other and there were 6 colors to show different character traits. I think it went well and it was planned, but it could have been longer and had more bracelets traded. Yes, it raised awareness of the Coyote Code and was good for team building. It helped students recognize each other. Yes, it is good to use bracelets to represent character. Haiden S. (4th grade student) - I think it helps people get new friends and be helpful. It makes people do the Pillars of Character. They know they have done good character when we passed the bracelets to students. I thinks we should do it again next year because it would help the new students make friends and people would start being kinder to each other. I do not think we could have added anything to Character Counts Campaign. I like using the bracelets to represent the Pillars of Characters because you can tell which Pillar of Character the students have. Ms. C. (3rd Grade Teacher)- I think it is important to recognize the kids being good. It helps us focus on the positive behavior. I like seeing the kids look for character in each other. I think we should do it again next year because the kids were excited about it . I like using the bracelets. Natalie L.( 3rd grade student)- I think character makes you help people and be kind. Some successes are people helping each other and being nice. I like how other people have a chance to be nice and helpful. My favorite part was helping people. I dont think we should have added anything. I think we should do it again next year because they are helpful. I like using the bracelets. Mrs. K. (2nd grade teacher)- It teaches students what goes on in the real world. It helps recognize good character. My favorite part was giving out bracelets to the students. We did a good job with the campaign. Yes the kids liked receiving and giving the bracelets. Yes, we should do it again next. Saha D. (2nd grade student) Character helps people be nice. More people were nice after we started doing the bracelets. The successes of the bracelets were that people have started to get nicer. At rst people in my class were rude but then they started getting nicer after we started using the bracelets. I dont think we should add anything. I think we should do them again next year. I like using the bracelets. Look for more interviews from teachers and students about the bookmarks!

Language Immersion in CFSD

In CFSD, we believe in developing all students cultural competence. World Language instruction is part of our core curriculum. At the elementary level, students either participate in our K-5 Spanish program (taught by a specialist for 120 min./wk.) OR in one of our Language Immersion programs.

Spanish Immersion
at Ventana Vista
started in 2009 Gr. K-4 for 2013-14 Open to K-4 students
(students entering gr. 2-4 must meet language criteria)

Mandarin Immersion
at Sunrise Drive
starting in 2013 Gr. K-1 for 2013-14 Open to K-1 students

The overall goals of our Language Immersion programs are for students to: meet or exceed academic achievement levels in all areas of the district curriculum; acquire a high level of communicative and academic prociency in English and the target language (Spanish or Mandarin); gain an appreciation of other cultures and a deeper understanding of their own culture; and increase capacity for creative thinking and problem-solving skills.

For more information click on the Spanish Immersion or Mandarin Immersion link in the Express Lane on the CFSD website: www.cfsd16.org. Call for dates of any informational evenings for parents (Ventana Vista - 209-8000; Sunrise Drive - 209-7900), or nd them on the schedule at the Open House/Tour Opportunities link in the Express Lane on the CFSD website.

Canyon View Milers Club

We Run for FUN!
Canyon View Milers Club is a fun, voluntary activity for students in 1st through 5th grade during lunch recess on Mondays starting February 4th. This club is about having fun while running or walking. It is not about being the fastest, but about being part of an organization that recognizes and enjoys the benefits of physical activity.

How does it work?! Our PE teacher Ms. Gallagher, along with parent volunteers will set up the course along

the outside of the big field. As the students complete one lap he/she receives a hole punch on their milers card from one of the volunteers. Students will be able to run/walk for about 15-20 minutes during their recess. Students will NOT be timed based on miles completed. Ms. Gallagher will keep a running total throughout the year on miles/laps earned so the students can see what they have accomplished. There will be a raffle at the end of each recess for students to have an opportunity to earn a small prize for participating that day.

Why Participate?! Running and walking are both healthy and fun! Exercise has been linked to improved academic performance, classroom behavior, and

self-esteem. Students will be recognized for their accomplishments on the PE bulletin board. For every 5 miles a student completes they will get a sneaker on the board with their name and how many total miles they have completed!

Parents are required to sign and turn in the permission slip before students are allowed to participate in this club. Signed slips should be delivered to Ms. Gallagher. Volunteers will be necessary to keep this club running. Recess for Grades 1-3 (11:50-12:20) and Grades 4-5 (12:20-12:50). Parents who volunteer will be sent a sign-up sheet for available dates! Small prizes/donations for the raffle are also greatly appreciated. If you have any questions/comments about Milers Club please send an email to Ms. Gallagher at mgallagher@cfsd16.org ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Milers Club Permission Slip
