Nailed-up Connection (NUC)

1 Denition
The Nailed-Up Connection (NUC) feature allows fixed connections to be switched between two points (point-to-point connection from port A to port B). Unlike dialed connections, nailed-up connections are not switched through the switching network just at the time they are needed, but are permanently switched. In addition to nailed-up connections within the public network, there are also nailed-up connections outside the public network which use private or leased telecommunications equipment and paths.

2 Mode of operation
The Nailed-Up Connection (NUC) feature can be activated for an unlimited period (permanent connection) or for a defined period only (temporary connection). Permanent nailed-up connection: Once activated, permanent nailed-up connections remain in existence until deactivated (e.g. for days, months). Permanent nailed-up connections are immediately activated when the corresponding MML command is entered by the administration. They remain through-connected until they are explicitly deactivated via MML. If any hardware errors occur that affect nailed-up connections, the system itself tries to set up a replacement path. If it this is not possible, the NUC breakdown is reported to the administration. An alarm prole can be assigned to a nailed-up connection. Depending on the priority of the assigned alarm prole, the failure of an NUC is reported to the administration by either an alarm mask at the craft terminal or by an alarm mask at the craft terminal as well as a warning on the system panel. After clearing the fault, the system automatically attempts to reactivate the nailed-up connection. If the nailed-up connection is not reactivated by the system after a recovery or after a hardware fault, a reactivation timer is started. This timer can run up to 10 times periodically in an attempt to reactivate the nailed-up connection. If the connection can be successfully reactivated during this time, the timer is stopped. An active permanent nailed-up connection can also be tested with an external test device. Permanent nailed-up connections exist for 3 classes of use: leased lines between two ports in the network (subscriber - subscriber or subscriber - service center) NUCs for the transfer of concentrated packet data information between the D-channel of ISDN subscribers and the packet data network Common channel signaling NUCs for signaling links between two signaling points in the CCS7-network Temporary nailed-up connections: Temporary nailed-up connections are only in existence for a dened period (e.g. only on a specic day of the week). Temporary nailed-up connections are activated and deactivated automatically by the system at intervals. The administration must therefore use MML commands to enter the date and time of day at which they are to be activated/deactivated. Each nailed-up connection is given a name when it is created (NUC identification). After creation, the data for the nailed-up connection are stored under this name but the connection is not as yet active.

Nailed-up Connection (NUC)

A nailed-up connection is described by: NUC identication incoming equipment number outgoing equipment number connection type, which species the type of nailed-up connection involved incoming B channel for ISDN-BA outgoing B channel for ISDN-BA features, details on echo suppression and the DCME process alarm prole: different alarm priorities can be assigned depending on the importance of an NUC Nailed-up connections are activated and deactivated with separate MML commands. For long-distance connections, the nailed-up connection must be created separately in each exchange. Capacity The maximum possible number of activated nailed-up connections per exchange is dependent on the capacity stage of the switching network and on the size of the corresponding semipermanent databases.

3 Subscriber controlled input

Subscriber controlled input is not possible for this feature.

4 Call charge registration

It is possible to charge a flat rate.

5 Administration
The operator can perform all administration functions on the NetManager by means of user-friendly applications or MML commands. Feature authorization The network operator assigns authorization for the feature when requested by the subscriber.

Subscriber access types The feature can be used with the following types of subscriber access: Type Subscriber Analog Main station Basic access PBX PBX with BA and/or PA PBX line PBX line with Direct Dialing In (DDI) PBX line, connected like a subscriber Coinbox Emergency call station MLHG line Basic attendant console MAC attendant console Connection line Traffic administration Traffic measurement The number of activated nailed-up connections per network node can be recorded and displayed. The time for which a nailed-up connection is activated can be recorded. The number of calls and the trafc volume can be recorded. Both types of metering can be carried out for each trafc direction. For information on the facility usage measurement, see Traffic Measurement. For more information see OMN:EXCH-TR. Routing administration The administration of nailed-up connections is defined with physical port numbers (subscriber or trunks). For more information, please refer to OMN:EXCH-RO.
