JOB DESCRIPTION HOSPITAL SOCIAL WORKER Qualified SCPs 26 - 30

GENERAL BRIEF+
The Social Worker is part of an integrated team based in a Hospital and working with patients and their families and carers, admitted to Hospital. In addition to office and ward interviews, some home visits may be carried out. Their tasks are to assess and plan and support clients to cope with social, emotional, economic and environmental problems. The main aims are to help clients maintain their independence and to live as normal a life as possible in the community and to work jointly with health staff on social matters that may affect present and future health. To do this they will mobilise not only the personnel resources of the clients through casework or group work, but also draw upon domiciliary, day and residential services or financial aid available in the Department, through outside statutory and voluntary agencies and through relatives, neighbours and volunteers in the community. The Social Worker will be fully conversant with procedural manuals, become aware of the policies of the Department and adhering to administrative procedures. He/she may be called upon to explain these to hospital staff. He/she is seen by the Department as playing a joint role in carrying out its objectives to meet the needs of the clients. He/she has to be sensitive to the social affects of hospital life on their clients and, as appropriate, The Social Worker will pass to management, information and recommendations significant to the conduct and development of the service. The Social Worker is accountable to a Team Manager. Supervision will be provided on an assessed basis dependent on experience, ability, qualifications and the number of more complex cases carried. With Supervision and advice: i. Will be responsible for organising their workload which may include the more vulnerable clients or those with complex problems. ii. Will have to accept responsibility for action in relation to the liberty or safety of clients in emergency situations. iii. Will be responsible for interviewing, visiting, assessing priorities, report writing. iv. Will be responsible for liaison with colleagues and other agencies. v. Will be expected to concentrate on specific areas of work where such concentration arises primarily from organisational needs.

vi. Will normally be expected to undertake day duty or any matter arising in his/her workload on any working day. Will be expected to develop a full understanding of his/her tasks and responsibilities in accordance with Statute, including the authority vested in them in their legal authorisation document. Should be conversant with current thinking on professional conduct and practice. May be called upon to undertake supervision of students, trainees or staff other than Social Workers. In accordance with departmental policy, will be required to attend relevant training courses and staff development programmes when these are made available and recommended by senior staff/training officers. May be expected to undertake specific liaison functions and/or specific areas of work with other establishments/groups/agencies where such concentration arises primarily from organisational needs. Will be available for any relevant duties allocated by the Team Manager within their competences Other duties: To undertake such other duties, training and/or hours of work as may be reasonably required and which are consistent with the general level of responsibility of this job. To undertake health and safety duties commensurate with the post and/or as detailed in the Directorates Health and Safety Policy.

JOB DESCRIPTION QUALIFIED HOSPITAL SOCIAL WORKER SCP'S 31 34 (36 with PQ Award)
Must be qualified in accordance with Para 28 (11) (d) of the "Purple Book" or recognised as qualified and must have successfully completed an assessment of competence after a minimum of 18 months, post qualification experience.

GENERAL BRIEF
May be required to concentrate on specific areas of work requiring highly developed specialist skills. Will be expected to develop a consultative role. Will be expected to develop a full understanding of his/her tasks and responsibilities in accordance with Statute, including the authority vested in them in their legal authorisation document. Should be conversant with current thinking on professional conduct and practice. In accordance with departmental policy, will be required to attend relevant training courses and staff development programmes when these are made available and recommended by senior staff/training officers. Will undertake supervision of students, trainees or staff other than social workers depending on individual competences. Will undertake specific liaison functions and/or specific areas of work with other establishments/groups/agencies. Will be expected to take part in day duty, rapid response services and any other matter arising in his/her workload on any working day and, in addition, To participate in out of hours service (Saturday and Sunday core hours). Will be responsible for any relevant duties allocated Team Manager. Other duties: To undertake such other duties, training and/or hours of work as may be reasonably required and which are consistent with the general level of responsibility of this job. To undertake health and safety duties commensurate with the post and/or as detailed in the Directorates Health and Safety Policy.
