INTRODUCTION
The OSU-Institute of Technology- Engineering Technologies Division, acknowledging that not all aspects of industry can be satisfactorily taught within the confines of the university, has established an internship program. The program provides student-interns with an opportunity to gain field experience under the direction of industry professionals and academic advisors. The internship shall be directly related to the interns program of study. The intern will perform in actual employment status and will be granted university credits for successful completion of the program.

GOAL AND OBJECTIVES


The goal of the internship program is to provide an avenue for student-interns to obtain industry experience related to their individual career and educational goals. Student interns should use the internship as a means to explore, investigate, and observe. Classroom knowledge and skill shall be put into practice.

General objectives include, but are not limited to the following: 1. Gaining hands-on experience in a program of study related industry or business 2. Develop and/or improve understanding of organizational practices 3. Develop and/or improve human relation and communication skills 4. Attain self- developed learning goals.

CREDIT
Upon successful completion of the student-internship experience, students will earn academic credit- hours toward the completion of their prospective degree plan. The number of hours earned is specified in each program of study.

STUDENT-INTERN GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES


The student intern must enroll in required courses, process appropriate forms, communicate process to industry mentors and advisors, satisfy the employers job expectations, and satisfy self -developed learning objectives. The knowledge and skill gained from the on- the- job experience and how it relates to career and educational goals will be the focus of internship evaluation and grading. It is the student-interns responsibility to insure the position will satisfy a growth in technical and leadership abilities.

ACCEPTABLE INTERN SITES


The internship site must provide valuable learning experiences that enhance opportunities for personal growth and for career preparedness. The position must be related to the student-interns program of study. The depth of learning experiences should continually rise as the student-intern progresses through the program. Simply performing the same task on a day to day basis does not constitute an internship experience. The site should have the capability of providing experiences that will allow student-interns to meet selfdeveloped learning objectives.

EMPLOYER RESPONSIBILTIES
Employers provide meaningful paid positions that will allow student-interns to contribute to the success of the organization. Positions that are merely invented for the sake of the internship and do not contribute to the company bottom line are not advised. Employers reserve the right to terminate student intern employees for failure to perform duties adequately and within company policy. Employers must provide time during the work week to perform required internship assignments and associated reporting. Employers are asked to agree to the following requirements: 1. Provide a willing supervisor/mentor that provides necessary evaluation material. 2. Provides opportunity for periodic on-site evaluations by university advisors if required. 3. Provide avenues for realization of student intern generated objectives. 4. Completion of Employer Internship Evaluation 5. Completion of Employer Student-Intern Evaluation Form

INTERNSHIP ADVISOR RESPONSIBILITY


Student-interns will be assigned an internship advisor. The advisor will perform the following: 1. Advise student-interns of policy and procedures pertaining to internship program. 2. Support students seeking internship partners. 3. Collect and process internship application forms. 4. Collect, analyze, and report data such as weekly reports, final reports, and surveys. 5. Communicate with internship site representatives using the most efficient and appropriate methods.

6. Determine final grade and provide feedback to intern.

INTERN CONTACT FORM


As soon as possible the intern shall forward the Intern Contact Form to his or her internship advisor. The form includes personal contact data and information concerning the work site.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVE FORM


Students are required to pay tuition for the internship experience placing a responsibility on the university to provide an avenue for students to gain not only hands on work experience, but also new knowledge and skill. The strategy used to accomplish this is to allow interns to have input on learning objectives they would like to pursue. Students shall provide on the Educational Objective Form a list of topics/objectives they would like to have exposure to during the internship experience. This form should be on file with the internship advisor as well as the internship mentor. Progress on these objectives should be monitored during the internship experience and all parties should be involved in meeting the objectives.

WEEKLY PERFORMANCE REPORT FORM


Weekly reports will serve to journalize meaningful learning experiences and provide an avenue for maintaining a communication link between the student -intern and the studentintern advisor. The reports will be used to help students prepare and write the final internship report . Main objectives for the reports are as follows:

1. Provide feedback on learning experiences. 2. Provide a hardcopy record of learning experiences to be used for job interviews and/or other career oriented needs. 3. Provide student-intern with an instrument to evaluate attainment of objectives. 4. Provide data for writing of final report .

FINAL REPORT
The final report requirement provides incentive for students-interns to seek deeper meaning during the internship process. Students must not only do the job, but broaden knowledge of industrial operations, knowledge and skill required of the field, and work environment. The report will be used as one measure of the success of the internship and provide an avenue for sharing with faculty and peer students.

General Criteria 1. Typed (double spaced 12 point font) 2. Edited for spelling, grammar, and punctuation. 3. Edited for technical accuracy, appearance, and organization 4. Length: The paper should be long enough to communicate to the reader the major details of the internship experience including objective attainment, but should not exceed 5 pages.

PROCEDURES
1. The student-intern must secure his/her own field based employment. 2. The intern must complete a Student Internship Contact Form and file it with the appropriate internship advisor as soon as possible. 3. The intern must enroll and pay tuition and fees in appropriate Internship course prior to beginning the internship experience. 4. The intern must electronically submit to the internship advisor a Weekly Performance Report Form . 5. The intern must electronically submit to the internship advisor the Internship Experience Final Report a minimum of 3 days prior to the end of the internship.

6. The intern must present a completed and signed Employer Internship Evaluation Form. The evaluation will be performed by the interns immediate supervisor. The form will be submitted to the internship advisor 3 days prior to the end of the internship. 7. The student-intern must present a completed and signed Final Employer Evaluation of Student-Intern Form The form will be submitted to the internship advisor 3 days prior to the end of the semester

Oklahoma Employment Security ACT Earnings received while OSUIT students are on internship are NOT included in determination of unemployment benefits. Internship employers should reference 2010 Oklahoma Employment Security ACT Section 1-201 159(M) PG 16-17 ( see expert below) if the employer receives notification from Oklahoma Employment Security Commission due to an OSUIT intern who has filed for unemployment benefits on their internship earnings. Section 1-210 15 The term employment shall not include: ( m) service performed by an individual who is enrolled at a nonprofit or public educational institution which normally maintains a regular faculty and curriculum and normally has a regularly organized body of students in attendance at the place where its educational activities are carried on as a student in a full time program, taken for credit at the institution , which combines academic instruction with work experience, if the service is an integral part of a program , and the institution has so certified to the employer, except thst this provision shall not apply to service performed in a program established for or on behalf of an employer or group of employers
