Learning Outcomes
Understand how to configure a keyboard controller with a Digital Audio Workstation and demonstrate skills to use a keyboard to input music in real time into a Digital Audio Workstation.

Scenario You have an artist arriving at your studio in a few months time and as the producer you have been asked to prepare backing track ideas as a starting point for new compositions. You will need to create ideas that contain a drum or percussion line, a bass line and an 8 bar chord progression. You want to impress so make sure that your idea is quantized and edited to make it the best it can be! Assignment Task 1 Configure a keyboard controller to a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) using an appropriate interface (e.g. USB etc.) and map the following: a. Volume or Filter envelope b. Resonance c. Cut-off d. LFO

Task 2 Apply keyboard skills to accurately construct 16th note based 8 bar rhythms/beats in a DAW in real time using drum and percussion patches in the following time signatures and feels: a. 4/4 shuffle b. 4/4 funk or break beat c. 6/8 swing d. 7/8 straight Erase any unwanted notes, quantize accurately, adjusting the velocity on specific notes to achieve desired aim and feel e.g ghost notes etc. Task 3 Using keyboards skills develop the following for two of the beats created in 1.2., playing both into a DAW in real time, using appropriate patches: 8 bar bass line, including an LFO or Envelope filter on one of the lines where the automation is recorded 8 bar rhythmic chord progression relating to the bass lines in a., which include: i. the use of inversions ii. the use of one suspended chord iii. use of at least one 7th chord Task 4 Erase any unwanted notes, quantize accurately adjusting the velocity on specific notes to achieve desired aim and feel. Task 5 Evaluate the success of the process analyzing strengths and areas requiring further development
