A Few Thoughts by Rev. Clay Stauffer, Senior Minister

On Sunday morning, we focused on the lectionary text from Luke chapter 4, commonly referred to as the "Inaugural Address" of Jesus as he begins his Galilean ministry. He is in the synagogue reading the words of Isaiah 61 from the scroll: "The spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor, he has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free." I specifically made the comment that caring for the poor should not just be a liberal or democratic issue. For some reason, this is a common misconception by many in our society that only liberals and the Democratic Party care about the poor. It is simply not true. Caring for the poor is a responsibility that all Christians have regardless of their politics and ideologies. This is what Jesus calls us to do time and time again. In a few conversations that I have had since Sunday, I have again been reminded of how dangerous the use of labels can be. Many of you know that my doctoral research at Sewanee is heavily focused in this area. I have always wondered why people in our society are so obsessed with labeling others liberal, conservative, Republican, Democrat, Moderate, old Nashville, new money, etc. This tendency is human but is often very unhelpful. In the world of religion and Christianity in particular, this is definitely the case more times than not. We can all be guilty of doing it and not even realizing it. As a minister, I hear these types of generalizations all the time: that church is fundamental. That church is Bible-believing. That church is wealthy. That church is poor. That church is conservative. That church is liberal. All of these words are loaded, and they can mean different things to different people. Whether we like it or not, everything in this world is not black and white. There is a lot of gray. Adam Hamilton, a United Methodist pastor in Kansas City, wrote an excellent book a few years ago titled Seeing Grey in a World of Black and White (2008). He talks about the difficult task that the church has to move beyond the superficial labels and divisions of the secular world. We are called to wrestle and grapple with complex issues that can be divisive and that don't have easy solutions. His book is worth reading. Labels and stereotypes can be misleading and they can be divisive. We should always be careful how and when we use them.

More Than Conquerors by Carla Schooler, Minister of Jr. High Youth

Since young adulthood, this scripture has held a great deal of power for me because I grew up with a misunderstanding of God's love. I understood God as a disciplinarian up there just waiting for me to fail so I could be corrected by some great act of his wrath. I lived in fear of his pending judgment until I came to fully understand this scripture. I lived a life of fear until I began to understand that nothing in all creation can separate me from the love of God. As I prepared to share this good news with the youth of WCC another part of the scripture spoke to me in a new way. I have always accepted "more than conquerors" to mean I can overcome the temptations that plague me because I have the (continued on page 4)

I spent this weekend with some amazing students and some amazing adults at Bethany Hills Camp. The theme for our weekend was "Love is a Verb" and I was lucky enough to do a keynote on my favorite passage of scripture. Romans 8:37-39 says: No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

CWF General Meeting

Tuesday, February 5th 11:00 a.m. in Room 105

Say, whats a Fellowship Dinner Group? Glad you asked!

A Fellowship Dinner Group is a periodic gathering of church members simply to share a meal and form fellowship; a way for new church members to assimilate into the life of the church and longtime members to strengthen our bonds of fellowship; just one way that we point to Christ, who shared table fellowship with others as a sign of welcome and friendship.

Join us for guest speakers, Belita Howard, executive director, and Jackie Corley, program director, of Christian Community Services. Lunch will be served following the meeting in Drowota Hall. Remember to make your reservation. If you have not been contacted by a Circle caller by Friday, February 1st, call the church office at 297-8563.

Youth are Collecting Vegetable Garden Seeds

Last year the young children at Woodmont collected garden seeds for Morgan Scott's annual "Good Earth Garden." Morgan Scott distributed garden seeds and fertilizer to 387 families last year. Director, Ella Smith, tries to help residents become self-sufficient. She also teaches them to can, freeze and dry vegetables for the winter months. The youth plan to collect seeds again this year. A large basket has been placed in the Kids Commons area for collecting seeds. This opportunity is open to all members and friends of Woodmont. All seeds must be turned in no later than March 1, 2013.
