Oral presentation, 90 minutes

Track: Environmental Medicine

I. TITLE
The Heat is On: What to Expect in Global Health due to Global Warming and the role of the Naturopathic
Physician

II. DESCRIPTION

It is an unmistakable albeit unavoidable truth; global warming is a reality today, wreaking

havoc across our continents, demanding our attention and imposing disastrous impacts on our
environment, the affects of which are creating and will continue to create health issues that
were never or rarely seen by our predecessors.

III. FULL ABSTRACT

According to “Climate Change Futures”, a report released from The Center for Health and the
Global Environment, Harvard Medical School 2005, the resurgence of old diseases, such as malaria
and cholera, the redistribution of still others (like West Nile virus) and the emergence of new diseases are
of considerable concern. Since the late 1990’s, the pace of new and resurgent infections appearing in
humans, animals and plants has continued unabated (Epstein et al. 2003). Persistent poverty and
deteriorating public health programs underlie the rebound of most diseases transmitted “person-to-
person” (for example, diphtheria and tuberculosis).

• This presentation will focus on the emerging health issues, as well as those to come. We will review
the key role of natural medicine going forward and what we as Practitioners need to do to keep our
clients healthy through this time of change.

• We will explore the health issues that have arisen and those that are predicted to arise as a result of
global warming and what strategies we can develop using natural medicines to deal with each health
issue.

1
 Each health issue will be addressed in detail and what natural therapies would help an individual go
through them with ease.

IV. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

to emerge as a result of global warming

with each health issue
