COACHING MODEL by Beth Wallace

I have created a model called The Do Re Mi model....It is based on the musical The Sound of Music. There are many examples of life coaching in this musical. I would like to identify the coaching features that I feel apply, starting with the coach being Maria. Maria is a postulant nun who is sent to serve as a governess to a family that is lost, disconnected, and sad due to grief.

Maria acknowledges

the truth that she sees, partners with the children as they begin to move into action, that action being finding themselves again. She does this by creating a safe environment. From that point on she

partners with them as they find their voices .

This safe atmosphere

creates action, affecting the relationships the children have with their father, a stern Naval captain, thus creating the safety

and ability to move into action as well The outcome is a family that is strong with a solid, loving, connected belief system.

This trust in and love for

each other takes them literally over a mountain from Nazi invaded Austria into a safe, free Switzerland.

The job of a coach is to create an atmosphere that is safe and powerfully connected to the client, thus help the client is able to relax and move into action. I also want to identify his/ her pace at creating the change they are seeking, while assisting the client with good questions and notable awareness so that he/she begins to identify underlying beliefs and fears that could be sabotaging them. I am unsure of what my population will be, but I am thinking it will be people who are transitioning and are stuck. My philosophy as a coach is very simple. I wish to reflect the compassion I feel for each client, as that is my strength, and be flexible through intense listening to him/her. I feel that my style

of coaching is going to be very friendly and perhaps fun at moments, intensely connected and caring, helping the client to move into action while being aware that the actions might need to change as we go along.....I want to alway help a client come up with a plan for the week that is he/she feels is doable, creative, and has an element of joy if possible. DO: Demand impeccable standards for myself, always aware of the ICF code of ethics and core competencies. Offer a space of safety and complete privacy. RE: React always in the best interest of the client. Leave judgement at the doorstep and stay in the moment. Express acknowledgements to client and express noted awareness on the clients part. MI: Mix powerful questions with focused listening. Illicit a plan from the client, both short and long term, and express that coach holds the client accountable, after discussing obstacles, thus the client launches his/herself into action.
