House designs
A variety of factors must be carefully assessed before a family
decides on a particular design for a new house.
Certainly, for most, cost is of prime importance. As a result, the
first consideration in judging any design is its suitability in
meeting present and future space requirements at a price within
the family's financial means.
The building site will have a strong influence on the choice of
design. Some house types lend themselves better to lots having
certain characteristics. It is also a sound investment to choose
a design which is in harmony with other homes on the street
and contributes to the general appeal of the neighborhood.
CHOOSING A HOUSE DESIGN, an illustrated guide providing
useful information on all aspects of home ownership and plan
selection, has been published as a companion volume to this
book and is available without charge from any office of Central
Mortgage and Housing Corporation.
This edition of HOUSE DESIGNS includes sketches
and floor plans for approximately 85 houses which have been
prepared through the co-operation of Canadian architects and
offer a wide choice of contemporary designs. To help prospective
home owners visualize room sizes and possible furniture
arrangements, the floor plans have been drawn one-eighth inch
to a foot and appear over a grid marked off to this scale.
The sketches in the book are intended only as illustrations and
prospective home owners should obtain detailed working
drawings before completing a contract or starting construction.
Modeles de rnaisons
Avant de choisir un modele de maison il faut qu'une famille
evalue ses besoins avec soin et tienne compte d'une variete
de facteurs.
Pour la plupart, il est certain que Ie coat est toujours un element
de grande importance. Aussi, il faut en premier lieu juger si un
modele de maison quelconque convient au x exigences actuelles
et futures de la famille en cause et a ses moyens financiers.
L'emplacement sur lequel une maison doit etre construite influe
aussi beaucoup sur Ie choix d'un modele de maison. Certains
genres de maisons se pretent mieux que d'autres a des terrains
qui presentent certaines caracteristiques. II est aussi preferable
et meme avantageux de choisir un modele qui s'harmonise
bien avec les autres maisons du voisinage et contribue a Ie
rendre encore plus agreable.
Une autre publication de la Societe centrale d'hypotheques et
de logement, LE CHOIX D'UN MODELE DE MAISON, cons-
titue un guide illustre qui renferme des renseignements utiles
et des conseils pratiques a I'intention des futurs proprietaires,
en ce qui concerne Ie choix d 'un plan. II est utile de consulter
cette brochure au moment de choisir un modele de maison,
surtout du fait qu'on peut I'obtenir gratuitement a tout bureau
de la Societe.
La presente edition de MODELES DE MAISONS renferme des
esquisses et des plans d'etage d'environ 85 maisons qui ont
ete prepares avec la collaboration d'architectes canadiens;
on y trouve un vaste choix de modeles de maisons modernes.
Pour aider les futurs proprietaires a se rendre compte des
dimensions exactes des pieces et de la f a ~ o n dont ils peuvent
disposer Ie mobilier, ces plans d'etage ont Me traces a I'echelle
d 'u n huitieme de pouce au pied.
Les esquisses illustres dans ce catalogue ne servent qu'a illustrer
Ie plan de chaque maison; toute personne desirant construire
un de ces modeles de maisons devrait en obtenir les epures
detaillees avant de passer un contrat avec qui que ce soit ou de
mettre la maison en chantier.
Working dra1Nings
Detailed working drawings for any of the designs illustrated
in this publication are available from Central Mortgage and
Housing Corporation at a cost of $15.00 plus municipal and
provincial taxes where these are applicable. Four copies are
provided and extra copies, if required, may be obtained for
$3.75 each plus taxes.
Working drawings should be ordered by the design number
shown on each illustration. No refunds or exchanges can be
made.
Purchasers should be aware that modifications may be required
in some localities because of unusual building conditions or
local methods of construction.
Prospective home owners should consult builders in the area
in which they intend to build for information regarding the cost
of construction for any of the designs in this book. The working
drawings do not include a bill of materials; this can be discussed
with a builder or building supply company.
Purchasers who wish to make changes in the house plans
should discuss their proposals with the local offices of CMHC
before working drawings are ordered. It should be noted, how-
ever, that CMHC does not provide an architectural service for
design changes.
To facilitate receipt of drawings, orders should be sent direct to
the Supervisor, Office Services Department, Central Mortgage
and Housing Corporation, Ottawa K1A OP7, Ontario. However,
orders may also be placed through any of CMHC's local offices

Pour se procurer les epures de tout modele de maison illustre
dans cette brochure, iI suffit de s 'adresser a la Societe centrale
d'hypotheques et de logement. Chaque serie de quatre copies
coOte $15, plus les taxes municipales et provinciales, s'il ya lieu.
Toute copie supplementaire peut s'obtenir a raison de $3.75
chacune, plus les taxes.
Dans toute com man de d'epures, il faut indiquer Ie numero du
modele de maison en question. II n'est pas permis de retourner
ou d'echanger ces epures.
Les acheteurs devraient savoir qu'iI peut devenir necessaire de
modifier ces plans dans certaines localites, a cause des situations
particulieres qui peuvent y exister ou des methodes locales de
construction qui doivent etre observees.
Les futurs proprietaires se devraient de consulter les entre-
preneurs, dans la region ou ils ont choisi de faire construire
leur demeure, afin de se renseigner sur les coOts des modeles
presentes dans cette brochure. Les epures ne comportent pas
de listes de materiaux et ce choix devrait etre debattu avec un
entrepreneur ou un fournisseur de materiaux de construction.
