Organisations for The Modern Back to Basics.

1.0 Introduction This covers organisations for the major armies, and major conflicts from 1958 to 1997, so some strange armies appear, because they have been in action. Even so I have left out such marvellous military organisations as the U.A.E, whose entire armoured force stared in a news bulletin in January 1991, and also the Iranians, for the same reason. The organisations given can be used in conjunction with Rapid Fire as well as Back to Basics, but you would have to amend the rules to allow them to be used for modern warfare. The lists do not include the first line supply vehicles, except in artillery units, these should be added if using the supply rules. Although not noted in the rules, Infantry can be resupplied by helicopter flights. In these rules infantry have been given soft transport where appropriate, if no lorries are noted then the infantry dont have them, and walk. Assault and lift helicopters are listed separately under the battalion which can use them. 2 American Units. There are three sets of organisation for the US army, Pentomic, Road and Division 86. The lists in this section cover all three, but I have simplified the situation somewhat, to avoid too long a document. ROAD and Division 86 units practised cross attachment, so Tank and Mechanised Companies may be fielded with companies form the opposite. Similarly the Brigades are very flexible, and can command from 2 to 5 battalions in these units. 2 A American Pentomic Brigade group. 1958 (Note very short lived, Infantry have SAR) HQ Company 1 Jeep(3) carrying CO, 1 Man with Radio. 1 Jeep(1) carrying AOP, and 1 Man Radio 1 Jeep(3) carrying 2 men with 3.5 RCL, 2 Men. Cross attachment is practised, but brigade structures are rigid unlike those of the American army. 4 A British Brigade HQ 1958 to 1968. Able, despite the almost complete destruction of France in 1940, to be the only fully independent army in Western Europe, and only with lose ties to NATO. The French have a considerable world wide capability and maintain large and varied light forces to allow this. However the continual shortage of money has meant that new equipment is either just prototyped, or never appears. The French also continually reorganised during the 1970s and 80s, this has not been covered. From 1978 ish French divisions have been large brigades, so from that date on the Brigade level HQ is called Divisional. 7 A French Armoured Brigade HQ 1956 to 1966 (Infantry have SAR with R Gren, comds 3 Tank Rgt,1 Inf rgt ) HQ 1 M47(4) CO, 1 AMX-VCI(4) carrying 1 Officer, 2 Men with Radio 1 AMX-VCI(2) Carrying 1 Man Bazooka, 2 Men LMG, 1 Man Brigade Engineer Coy 1 AMX-VCI(4) carrying 1 Man LMG, 6 Men, 1 AMX-13 ECV(2), 1 AMX-13 CPP(2) Recce Groupe HQ 3 Jeep with HMG(4) 2 Sections 2 EBR90(3) Notes The M47 can be replaced with M4A3E8, and the AMX-VCI with M3 1/2 Track 7 C French Mechanised Regiment 1956 to 1966. The German army was officially reformed in 1956, but was not fully reorganised until the early 1960s, although combat troops could have been fielded earlier. Initially the army had almost entirely American equipment, although some World War II artillery survived into the 1970s. The first native armoured vehicles were of French design, or German design but

British production. The doctrine is essentially American, but cross-attachment is carried out on a permanent basis by adding a mobilisation battalion with the brigade, this adds the differing company type. Some older equipment survives in the territorial forces, and these plus some of the Jager units are not NATO committed. Due to the lasting ill feeling from World War Two, it was not until 1997 that German forces deployed for peacekeeping operations. 8 A German Pnz or Pnzr Gren Brigade HQ 1964 ? to 1982. As the last Stalinist state, North Korea has lost its sponsors, and may well have little functioning equipment left. Well into the 1980s their commandos raided into the South, trying to destabilise the regime there. The list below is of course estimated. There has been some combination and simplification of infantry types. It is also, for those feeling nasty, to add South Korean Equipment, say 1 or 2 companies. 12 A North Korean Tank Regiment HQ 1960 to 1997 [ Infantry have AR & A/T Grenades, commands 3 Btn] HQ T55(2). However in the late 1980s and on into the 1990s it has had the economic backing of one of the fastest growing economies in the world. It follows the American model to a large extent, and is an ally. It did fight in Vietnam and proved to effective, if brutal. 15 Syrian 1965 to 1997 One of the more militant Arab states heavily involved against Israel in 1967, 1973 and during Operation Peace for Galilee in 1982. It also supplied a division to the Coalition during Desert Shield/Desert Storm in 1991. It does not appear to be as well trained as the Egyptian army, but has provided a tough opponent in defensive positional fighting, and demonstrates high morale. Unlike the Egyptians it has remained with the Russians for its equipment. The World War II German equipment was supplied by France in the late 1950s, rumours that Panthers were also supplied have never been confirmed. 15 A Syrian Tank Rgt HQ 1965 to 1997 [Infantry have AR with A/T Grenades, commands 4 Battalions] HQ 1 BTR-152(2) or BTR-50(2) carrying CO, 2 Officers, 2 Men, 1 BTR-152(2) or BTR-50(2) or BRDM-2(4) carrying 1 Man LMG, 3 Men 1 T34ARV(3) or T55ARV(3) 1 T34/85(2), or 1 T55(2) or T62(2) or T72(2) Regimental AA Coy 2 Lt Trucks(2) towing ZPU-2(2) with 2 Crew [To 1973] Or 2 ZSU - 23/4(3), 1 SA-9(4) [From 1969] Regimental Recce Coy 3 BTR-40(4) or BRDM-2(4) carrying 1 Man RPG-7, 1 Man LMG, 1 Man Divisional Engineer Coy 1 Lorry(4) or BTR-50(4) carrying 1 Man LMG, 1 Man RPG -7, 4 Men. 1 MTU-20 AVLB(2)

17 South Vietnamese 1964 to 1975. Politicised, corrupt and incompetent is the image that ARVN left behind. Yet in a hopeless, losing situation in 1975 many units fought to the end, in particular the armour kept inflicting a bloody nose on the NVA. The force was from 1964 organised along US lines, with little in the way of armoured equipment. What equipment it did have was frequently obsolete, and tanks in particular were considered to be voting machines used to support the next general trying to occupy the presidency. 17 A South Vietnamese Brigade HQ 1964 to 1975.
