Lighting
2 HOMES Saturday, July 30, 2011 Richmond Times-Dispatch
By Joanna Ernst/Homes Writer
The right lighting is one of the two
things you absolutely must have in your
home, began LaDifference co-owner
Sarah Paxton. The second is a good
mattress.
Usually, homeowners enter a dark
room and make a beeline for the light
switch. While its more of a reex than a
planned routine, this ick of a switch
convenience is not sufcient for a
sophisticated and stylish living space.
Accessorizing a wardrobe, you add
shoes, jewelry and a purse to complete
the outt. Lighting adds that nishing
touch to the home, said Carole Louie,
an award-winning interior designer at
Virginia Wayside Furniture.
While lighting is not tangible like
window panels or area rugs, its purpose
as a home accent is equally powerful.
The best home lighting does justice to
the whole interior from bringing out
subtle hues and textures in fabric to
showing the details in the dcor. But
there is more to lighting than what
meets the eye.
Lighting truly affects mood. Its
functional, but it also changes the colors
and angles of a space. The single light in
the ceiling is the contractors minimum
requirement, Paxton said. Its the
ambient lighting that illuminates the
space in every sense of the word.
Without it, people are missing the
nuances of their space.
Ambient lighting is a rooms main
light source. The ambient light blends
into the background without working
in one distinct direction. People are
moving away from overhead lighting
toward ambient lighting for a more
relaxed and inviting space, Louie said.

source that serves a function. To splash extra
brightness onto a craft or book, lamps and
xtures provide a practical purpose. Or, with
accent lighting, an eye-catching centerpiece
is dramatically spotlighted. For a more
subtle but equally stylized option, there is
decorative lighting. The lamp or light xture
either complements other home accents or
ties the room together. The physical piece
becomes relevant to the dcor, often forfeiting
functionality for appearance.
Luckily, updating light xtures is a
relatively simple and budget-friendly home
improvement. With attention to ambience,
home owners can transform the visual appeal
and vibe in every room. Lighting helps
our customers make a statement about who
they are. Its an opportunity to showcase
personality, Louie explained.
Its easy to change lighting xtures,
Paxton added. Lighting as a home accessory
is something anyone can do. Its not even
difcult to tear out a xture.
People go with the safer choices for the
bigger pieces. But because lighting is usually
not a huge investment, dont be afraid to
express yourself. The new trend is to make
outside-the-box choices, explained Louie.

Richmond is known for
its traditional taste but
were sliding into a more
contemporary
direction.
Homeowners
should amend
the ambience killer
that is blinding
overhead lighting, what
Paxton referred to as the
hospital-ward look. Both
experts tout the benets of wall
lighting, popular in the 1930s
and 40s and brings choices to
setting moods. Paxton strongly
recommended adding wall
sconces. Added Louie, Wall
sconces are a great way to create
highly-versatile lighting, perfect
to balance a room, add height or
utilize up- and down-lighting.
For task lighting, a well-placed
sconce can be the tour-de-force of
a well-decorated reading nook.
With new advances in lighting,
compact uorescent and LED
lighting are both looking
especially radiant. LED lighting
glows with a crisp white light,
providing a nice effect for the
work area. Plus, the
bulbs dont burn out.
For truly illuminated
interior design, all
four lighting styles
should be incorporated
indoors. Remember that a
strategically-placed lamp in a
dark corner or a new xture can
ip your style switch. And, head
to LaDiff and Virginia Wayside to
get enlightened by the experts.
Walk into your space, but dont
turn on the overhead. Look for the
darkest corner of the room thats
where you can use accent lighting.
A lamp does not have to be a
shade on a post, advised Paxton.
In the outside world, Louie
said, we get bombarded by
technology. You want to come
home to chill and get back to
yourself. And the right lighting
helps a person do just that.
